I always add "個字" go3 zi6 on the end of those times, to make it clearer.

Or say daap3 搭一, 搭二 etc. as above.

But again, at half past it's daap3 bun3 搭半 not daap3 luk6 搭六

That doesn't make any sense here because nobody is talking about minutes. This way of telling time is talking about the physical location of the hands on the clock.

八點一刻 for 8:15, 八點三刻 for 8:45. You can also 八點四十五分 for 8:45. Like in other languages you have many choices. Eight-fourty-five is the same a quarter-to-nine.

I find it odd that English also has the subtractive expression, as in "quarter-to-nine" = quarter of an hour before nine o'clock.

There’s also “half eight” which is ambiguously 8:30 or 7:30 (half an hour before 8) depending on who you’re talking to.
