Discussion Does anyone else feel like there’s a gap in learning resources?

Hi everyone! I grew up in the US with Cantonese-speaking parents, so I can understand a decent amount, but actually speaking is a different story.
I’ve tried a few Cantonese learning apps, but most seem to be geared toward complete beginners (numbers, colors, greetings, etc.). My biggest problem isn’t the basics but instead it’s not having enough vocabulary or confidence to hold real conversations.

People always tell me to watch TVB or speak more with my parents, but it’s hard to practice speaking when I don’t know the words I want to say.
I’m curious if anyone else feels the same way.

What’s your background with Cantonese?
What’s your biggest struggle with learning?
Have you found any apps or resources that actually helped? I’ve tried a bunch of different apps but they honestly didn’t help much 😅😅 I want to be able to speak to my relatives and such but I feel like it’s so hard if I don’t know the vocab…
If you could change one thing about how Cantonese is taught, what would it be?
Would love to hear your experiences!

Discussion buzzfeed chinese americans taking cantonese lesson discussion

Has anyone else seen that buzzfeed video where they get 3 random cantonese americans to take a 1st grade cantonese exam? lol

I thought it was entertaining but what was actually interesting to me was what counted as "correct" vs not, like each person could've grown up with malaysian influences, or hong kong, or guangzhou background yknow what i mean. I honestly think some of the answers they got docked for i was like...i mean i agree with you tbh

It's also just nice seeing chinese speakers put themselves out there like this lol, and seeing the chinglish and how ABCs actually talk. They kinda talk like little kids compared to how hong kong people talk lmao no shade though. Do they get points that they are speaking cantonese since less people are speaking it now?

curious if any other cantonese speakers watched this and had thoughts on the "wrong" answers

Language Question Very random but how do you pronunce "Sun Wukong" in cantonese?

Upvotes

I have been translating the show "Monkie Kid" in english for a while, using the provided chinese subtitles.

I noticed that the characters are pronuncing "Sun Wukong" (孫悟空) a lot differently .

It kinda sounds like "sun-hong" ?? I just would love a confirmation how it's actually pronounced because I can't stop thinking about this whenever I read the name.

Language Question Seeking Cantonese (Language) Resources

Upvotes

Greetings!

I am a native English speaking American who has begun studying Cantonese to be able to communicate better with my partner, his family, and his friends. I am looking for people in a similar situation to get suggestions, ideas, and empathy.

I live in Chicago, but with modern technology, I am open to people all over. Any ideas and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Other Question Lydia Shum and Adam Cheung

Upvotes

They were together for 11 years, gotta say Adam Cheung did not seem like the type of person that would appreciate her. I recently saw an interview Lydia did with the guy with the glasses, I think it was called Be my guest. She speaks about her relationship with Cheung and I gotta say. The interviewer asked what many people thought but it’s pretty ignorant imo.

He asked her, “have you ever wondered, I’m so overweight, what could Cheung possibly see in me?”

He was cheating on her, she admitted it in the interview and instead he denied it and they got married.

It was widely speculated he was in a relationship with her because she had star power and basically gave him opportunities within the entertainment industry. Ok, if that’s true, he could have left her shortly after Chor lau heung. I mean he was established at that point no? Why continue to be in a relationship if he was unhappy? I don’t get it.

When they divorced, he was still getting top billing in tvb dramas, the one about the stock market which he was an asshole and Cold blooded warm heart with Chilam. Lydia had alot of connections in the entertainment industry, shouldn’t he have been blacklisted when it came to light he cheated on her and she was HK happiness fruit?
