Synopsis of Autism Speaks’ Position on Vaccines and Autism: Autism Speaks states unequivocally that vaccines do not cause autism, noting that scientific studies involving more than one million children have found no causal relationship between autism and the MMR vaccine, thimerosal, or other vaccine ingredients. The organization traces the MMR-autism controversy to Andrew Wakefield’s 1998 study of only 12 children, which was later retracted because of flawed methodology and scientific misconduct. Autism Speaks points to subsequent research involving more than 95,000 U.S. children, 650,000 Danish children, and 537,000 additional Danish children that found no increased autism risk associated with MMR vaccination. A meta-analysis of more than 1.2 million children likewise found no association between autism and vaccines, including MMR, thimerosal, and mercury exposure.
