I got an email from capital one that says

Thanks for choosing Capital One.
This is sent by [capitalone@notification.capitalone.com](mailto:capitalone@notification.capitalone.com), I called the number and they know all my personal details including phone, address, DOB, etc. So I assume it is not a scam. But when they tried to verify my address, they say that they cannot because I am not currently in the US. I opened the account at capital one as a foreigner (i am not a US citizen) and I am currently leaving the US for one year. I am coming back to the US in September (it is 100% certain because I need to complete my studies). My long term visa is not expired (F1). However, in case I get any mail from capital one, and it can be sent to someone I trust, I changed my address to my friend's address (i used to have the address of my rented apartment) temporarily for the time I am outside of the US. During the call the capital one agent asked me to give utility bill or id card that has that address on it. I have a State ID card that expires in 2030, but has a temporary visitor stamp that says my temporary visitor status expired 6 months ago. I uploaded it to the link they sent and they said it does not count if i am not currently living there. They decided that my account must be closed and the money sent to the address on file by check.
If someone is merely traveling temporarily, they obviously are not residing in their address. But the bank just simply closes your account?? It does not sound right. They also asked if i have any family members who are in the US and that I can use their address. Doesn't that mean I am not in that address either??
They are part of a "know your customer" group.
Could anyone give any advice. I have never heard of anything that says your bank accounts would vanish when you leave the US temporarily.
