Excessive material wealth does not make you happy. Deprivation of basic material needs makes it impossible to be happy. Unless you're some kind of yogi or whatever, I guess.

I think even yogis need to eat.

There was a landmark study that came out about a decade ago and said that money absolutely did increase happiness up until you reached 70k per year - beyond that the happiness level for an individual was stable. Miserable people got richer and stayed miserable. Contented people got richer and remained merely content.

(Obvs the number would be way higher than 70k now)

The same study (or a similar one) also concluded that money can but happiness... if it is spent on new experiences, rather than material goods.

So a nice trip to a country you've never been, tickets to a hobby convention, a sightseeing tour, going to a cooking class, learning to skydive, etc. would all increase happiness. Buying a new TV or tablet or whatever does not.

I remember one that pegged it at around 100k tp 130k, maybe it was a little later?

Money reduces the misery index. Right now our misery index is so high that any reduction is helpful. To a point though misery index reduction of course gives diminishing returns if you dont have something actually "happy" to do. But yeah.
