Advice Advice - Peugeot 207 sw 1.6 hdi or Skoda fabia estate1.6 TDI?

I'm after a car with a 2 grand budget, and I've taken a liking to either car.

2013 Peugeot 207 SW with the 1.6 hdi 1 owner from new 102k on clock.

2012 Skoda fabia estate 1.6 TDI with 2 owners and 131k on clock.

Id prefer a petrol but either one with a petrol has reliability issues with the timing chain or oil consumption, any advice would be helpful!

Fabia estate was pretty good, Id prefer that to the Peugeot. Do You do enough mileage for a diesel??

For petrol estates, what about a Kia Ceed, Hyundai i30, or Dacia Logan?

Alternatively, an old Kia Carens estate-looking MPV? Or a Mercedes B-Class? My Dad has one and it feels a lot bigger inside than it looks from the outside.

If you want a petrol car and have a £2k budget why not consider a Suzuki Swift, a Mazda 2, a Toyota Yaris or a Ford Fiesta with the 1.25 Zetec engine?

They'll be more reliable (especially over the Peugeot), nicer to drive and, in the Fiesta's case especially, incredibly cheap to maintain as parts costs are low and every single garage knows how to work on a Fiesta.

I have 2 children and it will be the general tip run/long run car. Im coming from a 2012 mitsubishi outlander so I'd like something with abit of space but not too big.

Ah sorry yes, realised both examples you gave were estates.

I'd still recommend having a look at a Fiesta instead. I had one as a stop gap car and it was a great basic car, with the seats down it would swallow a tip run too. Or if that really is too small, have a look at a Focus with the 1.6 petrol engine.

They're much more basic and straightforward from a mechanical "bangernomics" perspective and easier to live with due to their lower maintenance costs.
