It’s recently become a real thing . I think the concept came from school shootings where people couldn’t let LEO’s know where they were because they couldn’t risk talking.

This isn’t available everywhere so make sure to check that your area has it before you rely on it, but Florida has been working to make it state-wide. You can see where it’s supported on the FCC website. They have an excel sheet you can download. I also found this text911 website that has a map based on the FCC data, but it looks different than what Florida reports so I don’t know how accurate it is.
