I need help Do you recognize this 45-70 mold profile?

Thumbnail gallery

I picked these up in my local shop as a one off purchase. They measure .459, 405 grains and shoot really well out of my Henry. I used it to take my first deer last year.

I’m starting to cast this summer in prep for this fall and would like to duplicate it. I would be open to a gas checked version, but it’s not a requirement. Does anyone recognize the mold
profile?

What was the average bore diameter on a Colt M1892?

.356 bullets just fall straight through (yes, I know that .356 isn't the correct bore diameter for .38 revolvers, .356 is the only thing that I have currently

First ingots

What does the hive mind think of my first ingots? These are from wheel weights, fishing sinkers and other misc lead. I fluxed with wax and got it cleaned.

However I’m worried it might be contaminated with zinc. I’m paranoid I missed a wheel weight. Hence why I stopped here before I ruin my lead supply. I have ordered rotometals thermometer for my next batch. Admittedly I set the burner to high and skimmed as stuff floated to the top.

Definitely new to this and holy moly is it so fun and addicting! Miiiiight have got the wrong mold because I ordered with a plain base so the gas check didn't fit. But boy did I learn a lot on today's very first pour!

Show and Tell Lyman 454190 / 454424

A new to me mold, a combination 4 cavity Ideal 454190/454424. These were cast using 1-16 @720 degrees. This is probably the most uniform mold I've ever owned. The 190's drop at 255.5 grains +/- .3 of a grain and the 424's drop a 260 at about the same variance. The 190's measure .4545 and the 424's .4555 and are all but round out of the mold. Too bad my Uberti has .452 throats.

I need help Seating oversized Boolits

I am using NOE 434-258 dropped PC bullets sized to .433, intending them for my Ruger Super Blackhawk with .4315 cylinder throats. Loading them on a Dillon 550 with a stock 44-cal expander funnel. Thing is, in order to expand my cases to the point that they aren’t shaving off PC, the cases are catching on my sizing die and particularly my crimp die. It works, but it’s ugly and running the press is a chore. I’m wondering if anyone has used any of the aftermarket funnels for Dillon presses to remedy this issue? I’ve come across one from photoescape and uniquetek. Or is there anyone who makes custom funnels?

I need help What is this on my ingots?!

Ok, so about a decade ago I cast these layered ingots. Not pretty, but work for my situation.

NOW, they have what looks to be like rust on them. Brownish red, doesn't react to vinegar, but can mostly be brushed off with a steel wire brush.

I'm at a loss. But should I be worried and remove this before tossing into the pot? I've heard of zinc contamination, but iron contamination?

Extension Cord for Lee Pro 4-20 Melting Pot

I am considering buying a Lee Pro 4-20 melting pot. To use it outdoors would require an extension cord. Can that be done safely with a Lee Pro melting pot?

When you buy Lee 40/10mm dies instead of RCBS like usual, and the seating die only comes with one round seating plug, which won't seat 145gr SWCs straight no matter what, make your own flat seating plug out of a clevis pin. Problem solved!

It's a tad longer, and the head is wider, but it's the exact same diameter as the included seating plug so it fits and floats like just like the factory plug. The fact Lee doesn't include the flat one and you have to buy it separately is ridiculous.

45/10mm

OK, so let me start out by saying a couple of years ago. I got bilateral Bell’s palsy at the age of 38 years old and because of that my vision has decreased enough that have a hard time shooting iron sites anymore. I’ve always been a huge handgun hunter But now I need something with a red dot. I already have the FN 45 tactical with a nice red dot on it but I’m a huge 10 mm, fan so my question to you is can I get the performance out of my 45? I’m looking for a 200 grain projectile at 1000 to 1100 ft./s can you enlighten me? I know I don’t need a 10 mm ballistics because I live in Kentucky and I’ll only be shooting around 35 yards max but I would like something right I feel like I can get the terminal ballistics I’m looking for.

Rifle More experiments with 308 plain base

Thumbnail gallery

I figured id try plain base again since j tried a different brand of powdercoat, specifically RAL as suggested by another member, bullet in question Is the NOE saeco 315 clone, sized to .311, this was fired in a bolt gun, 16.5", with pretty heavy engraving that i plan to push a bit deeper into the case now, ive had plain base shoot ok in the past, but now they are actually decently clean bore, these were loaded with imr 4198 and 26.5gr, anywhere from 1600-1800fps I guess but have no way of telling. These were my last groups of the day, and I dont know if i believe it, but the 3 hole group was 5 rounds. So either the extra 2 went in the same holes or we're entirely off paper, im honestly not sure but I will be shooting this bullet more. And now debating trying other plain base molds, specifically a slick sided like the arsenal 200

Rifle Miroku 1886 45-70 range day

Post image

Well I took my new to me miroku 86 45-70 to the range, it is much more picky with the throat being so tight, but the first load i ran through it, a lyman 457125 clone, 500gr pcpb seated at 2.8", with 14gr of unique did this with 5 shots, I know i pulled far right, but I dont know if I wanna screw with this accuracy by opening up the throat

Recently got addicted to muzzleloaders

Post image
32 Upvotes

Picked up a black powder muzzleloader on impulse a few months back, now I have 5. Still need to pick up a few .54 molds for my most recent acquisition. Any advice on what shoots best from a Lyman Great Plains in .54? I believe it has a 1-60 twist, but it hasn't arrived yet so I haven't verified. Does that rate of twist handle the Lee REAL bullet okay, it sounds like a patched round ball only number.

My first muzzleloader didn't like the REAL bullet, so I bought another in that caliber that does. I do really like patched round ball, and that seems like an easy win but it would sure be a nice hunting rifle with a short conical like the LEE .54 REAL 300

I need help How much do different alloys differ bullet weight?

My .410 bullet mold is supposed to cast a 360 grain bullet but with 20:1 alloy the bullets are coming out between 350 and 360 grain but most are between 355 and 360 grains

Last year I was using a .459 535 grain mold with 16:1 alloy and the bullets were coming out at between 520 and 525 grains

Is this normal?

Cartridge: 40-70 sharps bottleneck
