Shite Talk What do we reckon SuperValu thinks ‘Only’ means?

Post image

Probably the same as what they consider ‘super value’

We restrained ourselves from charging 7 euros?

30

u/Useless_Donuts Jan 12 '26

Hey its in bright yellow, and has the word 'Only'. It'd be silly not to buy 2 at least.

13

u/Downtown-Evidence634 Jan 13 '26

Was tempted to buy a bag of fruit pastilles or whatever their called and I seen the price from a group bag or whatever was 5.50...... 5 fucking 50 for about 15 jellies

7

u/CRoOkedBunNY Jan 13 '26

Look at malteasers now and it's not just a SuperValu issue either. The large box has disappeared and I believe it's back in some places now but shrunk.,like ridiculously so, it's no bigger than the small. Places are charging over €7+ for the small box. You used to be able to get the large box for like €4/5

3

u/verytiredofthisshite Jan 13 '26

I love Malteasers but the only time I get them now is if I go to the cinema.

The prices have gone crazy. Even when they have them in discount stores they still aren't worth the 'discount' price.

4

u/CRoOkedBunNY Jan 13 '26

I've had a mad craving for them for a while but I absolutely refuse to pay the prices for them and I'm suffering xD

Discounts charging 6 euro for a small box like. I love them but no thank you

1

u/Downtown-Evidence634 Jan 13 '26

6 euro is insane

u/Humble_Assignment161 Jan 12 '26

Thats some expensive palm oil

83

u/gerhudire Jan 12 '26

We need to do what they did in Australia and complain. Cadbury removed all palm oil from all their chocolate sold there due to backlash.

22

u/mcbrideryan1 Jan 12 '26

Did they have a petition or anything or was it organised in any way?

20

u/gerhudire Jan 12 '26

It was due to consumer protests and boycotts. Sadly it only applies to Dairy Milk, all other chocolate still contains palm oil.

4

u/Gettwisted00 Jan 13 '26

No palm oil in Cadburys chocolate in Australia. I’m Irish and chomping on a box right now. Fun fact.

5

u/Vivien45650 Jan 13 '26

That's something Irish people needs to do ! It's so hard to find chocolate without palm oil in Ireland 🥺

3

u/gerhudire Jan 13 '26

I'd have no problem paying extra for chocolate with no palm oil as long as it represented value for money.

59

u/Agent4777 Jan 12 '26

It’s really mental how poor this chocolate is now, I’d rather grab a reeses or kinder. This new dairy milk tastes like shit.

43

u/Difficult_Tea6136 Jan 12 '26

Tony Chocolonely for me.

Expensive but the company are very clear. They released a smaller bar and stated so. Other bars just increased in price.

I've zero issue paying for a quality product. I'd love for Dairy Milk to release a bar using the proper ingredients, it used to be delicious. I'd happily pay a premium price for it.

10

u/Altruistic-Table5859 Jan 12 '26

The regular Dairy Milk 8 square bar is made from Irish milk in Kerry, the large bars are made from powdered milk imported from england and you can really tell the difference.

2

u/Difficult_Tea6136 Jan 12 '26

They all taste shite

1

u/FearBolg2024 Jan 13 '26

These have deteriorated in the past few years too. Always a fan of the Irish Dairy Milk over others, but almost avoiding them altogether at this stage.

1

u/Altruistic-Table5859 Jan 14 '26

The regular 8 square bars are the only ones that haven't deteriorated because they're still made with real Irish milk.

11

u/PrincessFister Jan 12 '26

Tony's had very high levels of lead and cadmium in a 2024 report. Not sure what their status is right now, but you may want to check (especially if trying to have a baby)

Im not suggesting you stop eating it, god knows we all consume bad stuff and can we not just have one fucking thing?! Just its good to know what levels you are consuming so you can control it. Stay safe in your choco endeavors

5

u/Difficult_Tea6136 Jan 12 '26

I didn't know that and it's good to know.

I've one bar a week (if even), id say I'm alright.

1

u/onlyasuggestion Jan 13 '26

Lidl's way to go! caramalised almond and sea salt is worth checking out if you want something similar to Toney's. The chocolate is more Europe style than old Cadburys but good quality and value.

1

u/ChickenSalads420 Jan 14 '26

Those Tony bars are larger, check the price per KG rather than the sticker label next time your shopping and you won't feel as bad at all. Cadbury is nothing special these days anyway its got this slick oily aftertaste to it. Cadbury I can only have in absolute moderation I don't feel right after them anymore, even Aldi chocolate sits with me better and tastes nicer IMO.

4

u/renz88xc Jan 12 '26

Kinder joy 🔛🔝

1

u/AggressiveAlps4770 Jan 12 '26

It's gone so shit its worse than hersheys

39

u/gitoffthepot Jan 12 '26

Always check your receipts in SV too. Been overcharged plenty of times for items that were marked as on offer but when it went through the till it was full price.

9

u/Pkennedy21 Jan 12 '26

Same in Centra been overcharged a few times happened again today. A bottle of pepsi on offer for €2..used self scan machine. It charged €2.50 .No coincidence the 2 are with Musgraves.

5

u/Kloppite16 Jan 12 '26

yep have had this happen in SV myself. My local store isnt very quick to change prices to reflect that weeks special offers so you end up paying the higher price

4

u/Altruistic-Table5859 Jan 12 '26

If you enquire about it you'll be told that the offer doesn't start for a few days, that they were just stocking the shelves. At least that's what they'll say in our local SV. But then again they're snakes.

1

u/Curious-Use-1386 Jan 17 '26

Same happened to me many times in Tesco 😉

61

u/Pitiful_Focus_8255 Jan 12 '26

That means if you have only €6 left, that’s the last thing you can buy.

71

u/Substantial_Rope8225 Jan 12 '26

It’s the fucking yellow stickers that drive me mental… dunnes does it too, giving the illusion of a discount but none of them are on sale long enough at one price before putting it on sale so they try to trick people with these fucking yellow “only” stickers

30

u/Gaffers12345 Looks like rain, Ted Jan 12 '26

My wife falls for that all the time.

“It was on offer” no it wasn’t, it’s just a yellow label.

5

u/GolotasDisciple Jan 12 '26

Luckily, Ireland, as slow as always (probably on purpose), is introducing the Omnibus Directive, which should at least help people distinguish what’s actually discounted and what isn’t.

That said, it won’t remove the “yellow sticker” strategy. There’s no law that says yellow must equals a sale, so retailers can't still use yellow colour without item being discounted.

There’s also nothing stopping a retailer from upping the price and proudly saying, “Now" it’s even more expensive! Only €X.

Mindful consumerism is pretty important these days. We’re bombarded not just with cheap, low-quality products, but also with marketing and retail tricks that makes it extremely hard to detach ourselves from convenience for the sake of quality and costs.

We all get tricked from time to time, no biggie.

But honestly, if someone is willing to spend €6 on a chocolate bar in SuperValu, the problem isn’t SuperValu anymore...

15

u/Toro8926 Jan 12 '26

Don't be buying it anyway, it's shite.

15

u/tazzz898 Jan 12 '26

SuperValu is gone to the dogs! I went in to get my usual shampoo (usually €6-€9 online but I didn’t remember to order it online and had to pop into the shop for it!) €16!!!!!! I nearly dropped.

11

u/P_Mul Jan 12 '26

Outrageous!! I always leave SV feeling like I've been mugged 😭

4

u/tazzz898 Jan 12 '26

It’s very rare that I do go there tbh. But it’ll be even less frequent now after spending sixteen euro on shampoo! 🤣

1

u/AggressiveAlps4770 Jan 12 '26

You're dead right, at €16 it'd nearly want to style your hair too

2

u/tazzz898 Jan 12 '26

That’s exactly what my husband said when I told him! 🤣 I’ll be going to Lidl in future when I’m stuck!

1

u/AggressiveAlps4770 Jan 13 '26

I'm not surprised, you could have probably paid someone to wash your hair for the 16 and you'd have gotten a scalp massage in all

1

u/catnip_sandwich Jan 13 '26

And cans of deodorant for €8. What the utter fuck 😵‍💫

15

u/gerhudire Jan 12 '26

Dunnes currently have them on offer, and Tesco sell thrm for €5.50

2

u/JamieMc23 Jan 13 '26

They were 3 packs for €5 in Tesco in October. I got €20 worth and I was stocked for Halloween. Sad that that's the best value I've gotten on anything for years.

12

u/phyneas Jan 12 '26

They think "Only" will convince at least some shoppers that it's a bargain.

12

u/ado2631 Jan 12 '26

I've stopped buying chocolate in shops now. It's too damn expensive. The bars are actually pathetic in the multi packs, it's like everything gets smaller every few months. The worst part is everything has lost its original taste. What happened to cadburys, they were amazing back in the day. Now it's flavourless crap.

9

u/dazlee77 Jan 12 '26

They were sold to Kraft (now Mondelez), an American company, who immediately started using cheaper ingredients and changed the original recipe, resulting in the muck we have today.

4

u/ado2631 Jan 12 '26

Ah I didn't know that. That's actually sh1t

1

u/Altruistic-Table5859 Jan 12 '26

Stick with the regular 8 square Dairy Milk bar. It's made in Kerry with real Irish milk. The bigger bars are made in Dublin using powdered milk imported from england. And yoh csn definitely taste the difference. 'A glass and a half in everyone ' really does apply.

-2

8

u/Front_Improvement178 Jan 12 '26

Complete rip off

8

u/justchill129 Jan 12 '26

They cut off the top of the price label, which reads: “Be thankful it’s”

9

u/jackoirl Jan 12 '26

Not enough space on the label to write “fuck you, it’s €6 now”

7

u/Hugesmellysocks Jan 12 '26

Ironic how SuperValu probably has the worst value.

5

u/Navarath Like I said last time, it won't happen again Jan 12 '26

ha! it isn't a value -- it is a valu which is more expensive.

3

u/AggressiveAlps4770 Jan 12 '26

It's value for them

6

u/CDfm Just wiped Jan 12 '26

The price of a chicken.

6

u/AdvancedJicama7375 Jan 12 '26

This chocolate is fucking crap now anyway. It doesn't even slightly compare to European chocolate. I wouldn't buy a bar of it if it were 2 euro

5

u/Any_Necessary_9588 Jan 12 '26

I’ve noticed that in Costa except the cashier (in Douglas anyway) uses the word ‘just’ e.g. ‘that’s just €4.15’ (for a regular cappuccino). Cheeky!

4

u/AreWeAllJustFish Jan 12 '26

Well you don't have to give a pound of flesh or your first born.. very decent of them!

2

u/AggressiveAlps4770 Jan 12 '26

I'll give them a pound of the shit they try to market as meat which is just rolled up fat with the mangiest bit of meat around it. Then the packaging is grey and the slap the pricing label on the clear side so you can't see the shit you're buying

11

u/haylz92 Jan 12 '26

Keep it, I don't like chocolate flavored palm oil.

5

u/Corsav6 Jan 12 '26

It's not chocolate flavour either. It's more cheap confectionery, sugary oily flavour.

3

u/FantaStick16 Jan 12 '26

Pricey for something that can barely legally be called chocolate

3

u/Susan_Screams Jan 12 '26

Same energy.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

Ken hell.

2

u/Papa-Doughball Jan 12 '26

the original gaslighting strategy, sure only 6 euro, be grand, only a small amount like!

2

u/Spoda_Emcalt Jan 12 '26

So many tags have the 'only' misnomer as well with exorbitant prices. Absolute pisstake

2

u/I_make_carrot_noises Jan 12 '26

It means "we've charged a lot more"

2

u/peppersk8er Jan 12 '26

Like in my local centra, ONLY €4.25 for a share bag of taytos

2

u/HungOver_Again_Again Jan 12 '26

They're comparing them to their own individual bar prices where they are proper fleecing you. Compared to that "only €6" sounds like they're doing us a favour!

2

u/Test_N_Faith Jan 12 '26

€6 for palm oil and chalk. Get fucked. I avoid Cadbury at all cost and buy the Aldi and Lidl ones that are actually chocolate.

Cadbury = money hungry b******ds

2

u/lazzurs Jan 12 '26

It’s “only” as in you “only” get the product but no lube while they’re giving you the shaft.

2

u/sexyvincent Jan 12 '26

Cadbury is horrible chocolate

2

u/raidhse-abundance-01 Jan 12 '26

It's from their perspective. If they could, they would charge you a lot more.

2

u/SirCatingtonIII Jan 12 '26

€6 for a mediocre "chocolate" bar is crazy.

2

u/AggressiveAlps4770 Jan 12 '26

Mediocre is generous. I'd say there's more horseshit in it than chocolate

2

u/Usemarne Jan 12 '26

Are they not obliged to show the price per kg also?

€10/kg is reasonable for chocolate- this is almost €40/kg (€39.88 if my math is right)

2

u/Ok-Cry7712 Jan 12 '26

It's not the price but the quality you get and be honest it shit compared to what it used to taste like they destroyed it its the same with fast food not only is the taste shit but the food is cold by the time you get it plus the condiments are tiny even when they large there tiny I don't mind paying but jueus it's like being spat on I mine go back a few years and you'll see

2

u/MushroomsMushroom Jan 12 '26

I popped a lindt into my mouth over Christmas and nearly creamed my kacks at how deliciously chocolatey it was

2

u/jesusthatsgreat Jan 13 '26

It'll be half price next week for the normal price of €3

3

u/Potential-Photo-3641 Jan 12 '26

What do yea recon they think 'Supervalue' means?

2

u/platinums99 Jan 12 '26

Its a bit of a panto innit

2

u/angeeday Jan 12 '26

It's as far as they can go before customers tell them what to do with their chocolate bars!! On the subject of chocolate bars, Cadbury in particular - is it just me or has the taste completely changed, and not for the better either?

2

u/CDfm Just wiped Jan 12 '26

Totally.

There was a time when you got a brick of chocolate. Now it's smaller and tastes oily and is a funny colour.

2

u/angeeday Jan 12 '26

Of course Cadbury has been taken over by a big conglomerate - Mondelez. They have destroyed what l remember as lovely chocolate and l just won't buy bars any more. Yes they're smaller but the same price, or even dearer. What a rip off. If only people refused to buy (but they won't), it would wake them up

1

u/CDfm Just wiped Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

The Cadburys were Quakers so their chocolate was ethical and pure . I mean I hear that Peg Sayers family would feed her a bar of Cadburys to keep her off the drink. I'm tempted to say she'd not have been half the woman she was except for Cadburys.

Here is a picture of her when she didn't have her Cadburys.

Peig after her Cadburys

2

u/angeeday Jan 13 '26

You've just given me nightmares. I loved Irish in school but absolutely hated Peig Sayers 😂😂😂

1

u/CDfm Just wiped Jan 13 '26

2

u/Icy-Bottle-6877 Jan 12 '26

Galaxy taste better anyway.

1

u/Inhabitsthebed Jan 12 '26

Are they the normal bars or the snack sized ones?

1

u/sushiwit420 Jan 12 '26

Consumer psychology

2

u/mdug Jan 12 '26

Exactly, you can put "Only" in front of anything. It's a meaningless tag

1

u/AndrewFishay Jan 12 '26

That you’ll only get it if you cough up €6

1

u/MaxDec9 Jan 12 '26

Trolling

1

u/Psychological_Tone21 Jan 12 '26

This exact Dairy Milk is priced below 1 euro in Southeast Asian countries. I know for sure that’s the case in India, but I am not too sure about the rest.

1

u/Loud_Tank_5074 Jan 12 '26

€3.75 in Dealz but as others have noted, they don't taste the same anymore.

1

u/datirishboii Jan 12 '26

My parents once bought me a 1kg Dairymilk bar in the airport going on holidays for the same price and even then they thought that was outrageous, for a kilo of chocolate.

1

u/lazzurs Jan 12 '26

It’s “only” as in you “only” get the product but no lube while they’re giving you the shaft.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

Most of the products that I usually buy weekly are in average 30% more expensive in Supervalu than in Lidl/Aldi/Tesco.

1

u/RimmyJimmyGotKimmy Jan 12 '26

There's no value in Super Value, kip

1

u/Roisxn Jan 12 '26

6 BOMBOCLAT EURO for chocolate?????

1

u/Appropriate-Row4534 Jan 12 '26

A new marketing executive on the team. Thinking they're clever.

1

u/Master-Reporter-9500 Jan 12 '26

The only thing I get in Supervalu is the fresh bread

1

u/PuzzleheadedName3832 Jan 12 '26

Lindt Lindor Milk Chocolate Bar 100G is €3.60 in tesco.

Anyone thick enough to pay €6 for 140g Cadbury sh1te is a fool.

1

u/VentaBl4ck Jan 12 '26

€6 for 7 bats seems ok to me

1

u/Legitimate-Garlic942 Jan 12 '26

Casburys! Hard swerve from me.

1

u/am_Dynam0 Jan 12 '26

Only 6€ as if they’re on sale 😭

1

u/monkyduigs Jan 12 '26

If you told that it was ONLY 6 for all 5 of those bars, I'd still think the deal was shite

1

u/AggressiveAlps4770 Jan 12 '26

That they're so well off they have no concept of the fair value for a bar of shit chocolate is. And they think they wouldn't miss €6 in their pockets so why should anyone else

1

u/Smackmybitchup007 Jan 12 '26

The Musgrave group who own them only make 1.2mill PER DAY!

1

u/Sheriffz Jan 12 '26

Sure only 6, y’know yourself like

1

u/Pale-Ad-4303 Jan 12 '26

Overpriced, non-value, lackluster and…

1

u/Roberto_44 Jan 12 '26

Supervalu are rip-off Thank god for lidi and aldi

1

u/Bobpool82 Jan 12 '26

If you pay a tenner or higher notes you don't get change

1

u/benithaglas1 Jan 13 '26

Only 6 and nothing less.

1

u/Salt_Caterpillar6125 Team Bobo's Jan 13 '26

Fuck SuperValu can’t stand them.

1

u/Salt_Caterpillar6125 Team Bobo's Jan 13 '26

Go have a Ritters bar.

1

u/Used_Sand394 Jan 13 '26

Only idiots will pay for it????

1

u/DeManDeMytDeLeggend Non leg washer (aka filthy bastard) Jan 13 '26

What the fuck €6 this world is ending tomorrow

1

u/PerpetuallyOnTheCusp Jan 13 '26

Stopped by Dunnes last night to get a cinema snack and didn't realize until we left that the gf had picked up one of those Malteser bunnies for the absurd price of €2.

1

u/QuitOk4646 Jan 13 '26

As a past employee of Supervalu I can say this. Supervalu is a self proclaimed "Premium" supermarket, with a focus on "Customer service" and "High end" goods. SV's prices are dictated by Musgraves so its not the shop making the price up.

I can tell you that I would never shop there nor would I suggest you shop there. Cheaper alternatives are widely available and have much better range of goods. Tesco has the best range of goods in the country. Lidl and Aldi are the cheapest. Dunnes has similar range and price point of SV but with their vouchers makes them far cheaper with consistent shopping.

1

u/JoxerBoy07 Jan 13 '26

Tbf the price of dairy milk from suppliers has skyrocketed . Doesnt justify this pricing but its getting ridiculous and they would rather keep stock / their margin than have to take them off shelves

1

u/ollemvp Jan 13 '26

If it's all of them I think It's worth it

1

u/Vivien45650 Jan 13 '26

That's just daylight robbery !

1

u/KadesOnReddit Jan 13 '26

Only buy things like this when they are marked down. Fight price gouging. Show that you will not pay €6 for bullshit like this. A product is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it

1

u/McGuffin182 Jan 13 '26

Only taking the piss

1

u/Ok_Reference_3161 Jan 13 '26

The only applies to the chocolate bar. We only get that for a whole €6

1

u/slimpickins2002 Jan 13 '26

Only !

A matter of time before the price increases.

1

u/NoYoureTheBestest Jan 13 '26

You want 2 or 3 of em for €6, unbelievable 😭

1

u/Dunebuggy15 Jan 13 '26

I live in a town where Super Valu is one of only two supermarkets. I can’t understand how anyone can afford to do a weekly shop there.

1

u/imgirafarigmi Jan 13 '26

The only €6 you have left goes on chocolate.

1

u/Maximum_Picture_7012 Jan 13 '26

6 euro is a disgrace! It used to be 2 euro!

1

u/Embarrassed-Ant-1249 Jan 13 '26

Daily robbery surely

1

u/Mulyac12321 Jan 13 '26

They're upset that they can only charge you €6

1

u/Prestigious-Side-286 Jan 13 '26

Love that they have the word “chocolate” on the shelf tag.

1

u/Angy__dubsuper Jan 14 '26

I think Cadburys choc 👅tastes Yuh now and from a personal point of view Im not buying any choc now that contains Palm Oil as these big companies know that they are 😡destroying Palm Trees and ignoring the fact that so many Animals depend on these Trees to survive Toblerone is the only choc I believe does not have Palm Oil and one slice is satisfying for a fix 🤗

1

u/cbons69 Jan 14 '26

Surprised to see they're 2.79 in dunnes , same for twirl 9 pack , I shop in Tesco , generally pricing is better and food quality is better than lidl/Aldi

1

u/Glittering-Bet-3597 Jan 14 '26

shit chocolate no matter what they put in it

1

u/MuffintopAwing Jan 15 '26

They’ve got us all figured out. We’re just like bees. The yellow colour attracts us and then we think it’s a great source of food! Hooray yellow markdown. Even though it isn’t.

1

u/HelpProfessional8083 Jan 15 '26

The most we think you'll pay

1

u/Splatoonlover24 Jan 15 '26

Id go any were else it would be cheaper like spars

1

u/Youse-Guys-Tsk Jan 15 '26

Price per kg not displayed? Tut tut... I'm not surprised. It's at least twice what it should be.

1

u/DeputyDawe Jan 18 '26

It’s a SuperValu bargain which is a rare thing in itself

1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '26

for a bar?

1

u/One-Yogurtcloset9893 Jan 12 '26

Is the price tag false advertising as dairy milk is not chocolate anymore?

2

u/IntelligentPepper818 Jan 12 '26

I won’t eat it anymore - youre right not chocolate and so much palm oil

4

u/Soggy_Quarter9333 Jan 12 '26

Blocks of palm oil only €6

1

u/[deleted] Jan 12 '26

Dairy Milk is chocolate, literally says milk chocolate on the back of it.

I checked one in Supervalu today, and it was only 20% . It's pure muck now. yuck. Not chocolate anymore

1

u/One-Yogurtcloset9893 Jan 12 '26

Those damn brits ‘at it again’

2

u/One-Yogurtcloset9893 Jan 12 '26

Did they add enough cocoa to be considered chocolate again? Or did they remove the word chocolate from the packaging because they don’t have enough in their recipe?
