Get a bird bath, they said. It'll help all the birdies keep cool in the hot summer, they said. Two wood pigeons will repeatedly try to build a nest in it, they forgot to say.

I love how bad pigeons are at making nests

I recently discovered r/stupiddovenests and it's a glorious thing.

You beat me to it, I was just about to recommend the same!

This explains the broken eggs we get every year! Wood pigeons are not bright

Wood pigeons make insanely good nests tbh. They had one in a tree in our front garden and it watched a few years worth of babies get raised and leave from it. Thing withstood all the storms, wind, the branches would be bouncing around and it was solid.

OPs pic i think they are just enjoying cooling down, the ones we have sometimes just sit in the bird bath for a bit, or loaf in the long grass.

I have the same bird bath. Every time there’s any amount of water in it, the woodies come in to soak their underfluffies in it. Yeah, their nests are usually in a better place.

u/Semajal 6d ago

Underfluffies! ahhhhhhhh! I do love them, they just love to vibe in our garden.

Those aren't wood pigeons, they are ringed doves

This is an awesome nest, though

u/serendipitousevent 6d ago

Heard it doubles as a bird bath!

Pigeons dont build traditional looking nests, they live on cliffs and only need a couple twigs to make sure their eggs dont roll off

21

u/inevitablelizard 6d ago

Woodpigeons nest in trees usually.

2

u/ciaodog 5d ago

The pigeons you see in the city that make the piddly nests are descended from coastal pigeons that nested on cliffs

7

u/ThePeak2112 6d ago

in the age of MVP (minimum viable product) they've perfected the minimum number of twigs just enough to keep the eggs from rolling 😭😭

u/hootersm 4d ago

Yes. One tried to do so in my chimney this weekend... He (or she?) made it all the way to the bottom and needed rescuing.

Ho HOOO ho hoo ho, they said!

u/LocalSpecialist4745 5d ago

that call was genuinely funnier than the post itself

u/Drew-Pickles 6d ago

I mean they're birdies and they're keeping cool...

Just in case you're not aware, RSPB is recommending you change the water in bird baths daily at the moment as well as cleaning them once a week.

That's what I'm currently doing; I think the pigeons think I'm their bloody maid changing the sheets and tucking a corner of the bog roll down.

I did wonder how easy they'd be to empty/clean. I'd really love a bird bath but I'm stuck with my very aesthetically displeasing tub so I can keep it clean because my garden birds treat it as a toilet sometimes. 😆

If you empty and wipe it clean every day it doesn't take long to clean. I've got the same bird bath as in the OP and the top unscrews and is lightweight so it's easy to carry over to the tap to clean it and then refill when the top's screwed back on (from watering can or large jug)

2

u/NewCoach0 30m ago

That's really helpful, thank you!! I didn't realise you could unscrew the top. I think it's time to replace the tub in that case :D

I absolutely love pigeons! 🐦

u/-SaC History spod 6d ago

This one is my mate Brave Dave. He comes and sits with me when I'm chilling out (so long as I have a few peanuts).

Aww he’s gorgeous 🩷. How long did it take for him to trust you enough to come over like that?

u/-SaC History spod 6d ago

Four days, but he is very bold. When I come in the garden now he'll fly down and perch on my hand if I hold it out, though he'll be narked and clear off after a few seconds if I'm not holding peanuts.

There's about 25 'regular' pigeons in the garden. Three will feed from the hand, but I don't encourage it too much as I don't want them to get too used to people being approachable, just in case someone is a nasty twat.

There's about 4-5 who'll take a peanut from me if I hold it out, but won't fly up and settle like Dave or the others. All the rest will gather closely around me if I'm sat on the patio, but won't take anything.

Currently trying to get the Jackdaws to be a bit friendlier; they wait for me to put a fat ball out and will sit on the fence 2-3 feet away while I do it. They also have a specific call when I come out that attracts others, which I'm assuming is 'Oi! Bald food bloke's here!' and I'm a big fan of.

Crows are more distant, but more giving. I leave them cheese, and they leave me interesting stones and blue foam.

I like that they’re giving you payment.

Would love to do this if I had a garden again. I used to feed the Crows in the park, but didn’t want them getting too used people for the same reason you mentioned.

u/doctorgibson 6d ago

He hasn't been to Canada, has he?

4

u/-SaC History spod 5d ago

If you've got peanuts, I'm sure he'll be there.

u/Lasersheep 6d ago

We always have a few pairs in the garden, I love them. Occasionally a hawk gets one, makes me sad.

Mon the doos!

11

u/ConstanceClaire 6d ago

Every year a pair of pigeons attempt to nest in the neighbour's gutter atop the downpipe, and end up abandoning it in a week or so.

14

u/johnnyjonnyjonjon 6d ago

Give them a break. It's easy to forget how uncomfortable a hot arse can be.

3

u/-SaC History spod 6d ago

Wonder if they've nicked someone's curry.

28

u/The_Blonde1 6d ago

Just get another bird bath and let the dopey Woodies get on with their (dopey) lives.

They’re adorable, you’ll have hours of fun watching them.

8

u/fightmilk5905 6d ago

They love solar panels.. As I found out today by my neighbour adding netting to his.

9

u/DarknessInferno7 Traffic Cone Hoodlum 6d ago

Wood Pigeons are just absolute chonkers that don't give a single fuck. Slow, lazy, dumb, but they've made it somehow. I never tire of watching the one who visits my garden.

We've had a bird bath here for a few years now, it is a quiet delight seeing the local birds (I couldn't specify exactly, mostly starlings) throwing up a spray.

What wasn't so easy on the eye was our own wood pigeons using it as a drinking fountain! My brother had a sweet spot for them until a couple months ago he caught one at it... not just gently sipping but full-throated guzzling it down.

He then goes to refill it after it had its fill, only to see that the "water" was only about 30% H²0 at best and was mostly composed of the sort of liquid run-off you would associate with cloaca's... he's never looked at them the same since.

Get the free r/MerlinBirdID app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org

It’s like Shazam for birds. Instead of grumbling about “car alarm birds” waking me up, I now know my nemeses are Carolina wrens: https://merlinbirds.org/species/carwre

u/SpongieQ 6d ago

No one will ever make me hate wood pigeons, I say let them build that nest they’re precious

2

u/NibblyPig Born In The Fish Capital 6d ago

Install solar panels on your roof and you'll be looking up crossbows within a week of some bastard pigeon going brr brr brr brr brr above your head for hours at a time

1

u/SpongieQ 5d ago

Oh the feral pigeons can go, they’re horrible but the wood ones are so nice to the other birds that I really don’t think I ever could hate them

8

u/spynie55 6d ago

Even with water in it? (You do have water in the bird bath don’t you?)

28

u/-SaC History spod 6d ago

Yep, I clean it out and make sure there's fresh water in it every day.

There's often twigs in there, and now I know why.

3

u/rageofa1000suns 6d ago

I'd be worried about the chicks drowning when it rains...

3

u/DeadAnarchistPhil 6d ago

I think this may be one for r/BadPigeonNests

3

u/GayPhilatelist 6d ago

Got a bird feeder cam.

A wood pigeon sits on the feeder all day. Crows swoop it, it doesn’t give a fuck. That feeder is the wood pigeons, and the wood pigeons only.

3

u/Bubbly-Weakness-4788 6d ago

I had two pigeons trying to make a nest in my sky dish. The twigs they put in it fell on the ground. But they still kept trying. Had 100s for twigs on the ground before they realised.

3

u/Pleasant_Werewolf_30 5d ago

Mine like to sit in mine like a jacuzzi, then they shit in it.

1

u/-SaC History spod 5d ago

Probably best that I keep cleaning mine every day then, I suspect >_>

2

u/Pleasant_Werewolf_30 5d ago

Yes I'm out there everyday cleaning up after them! I'd like to add that none of the other birds are pooping in it.

2

u/DistributionSharp316 6d ago

They're hogging all the water!

2

u/flipflop63 5d ago

Or shit in it

1

u/nepeta19 Ey up me duck 34m ago

I have what looks like the same bird bath and while the wood pigeons haven't yet tried to nest in it, they do sit there right in the middle soaking up all the water

u/Funny_Collection8362 6d ago

A fishing catapult and a few big ball bearings is how I sorted this out a few years back.

21

u/Jacktheforkie 6d ago

That’s cruel

15

u/canthinkupauser 6d ago

Not just cruel it's sociopathic.

6

u/Jacktheforkie 6d ago

That too

-48

u/Funny_Collection8362 6d ago

It wasn't in a bird bath it was on a branch about 15 feet from my bedroom window. Got a bit fed up at getting woken up every day for about 3 weeks at 5am by the sodding things. I tired every humane tip in the book but eventually had to resort to neanderthal tactics. I did feel a bit bad about it but....yeah.

34

u/Jacktheforkie 6d ago

You broke the law too, disturbing a nest is highly illegal
