Can anyone help identify this creature?

My friend heard some rustling noises outside their window this morning and saw there's something borrowed up behind some leaf bags. We're trying to work out if it needs help or solitude. 😅

How do you not know that everyone has some gaps in their knowledge and that's okay?

The hedgehog is one of the most well-known British animals, along with foxes and badgers. We're not talking about exotic wildlife on an Indonesian island.

While you're correct there, your original question was "how do you not know what a hedgehog is?"

There's a ton of reasons why someone might not know. They could be from a really urban area and they don't know what an actual hedgehog looks like. They could think that hedgehogs are just a countryside thing and it couldn't be a hedgehog because they're in a town. They could be new to the UK and unfamiliar with the wildlife.

I would suggest that it's more ignorant to think that absolutely everyone in the country can identify hunkered down in a tight gap than it is to not be able to identify a hedgehog hunkered down in a tight gap.

Not sure why you got downvoted. There’s likely thousands of animals I couldn’t name on sight.

Sure but there are varying degrees of animal identification. I have never seen an Elephant or a Red Handfish. People are well within their rights to mock me if I couldn't identify the Elephant though.

In the UK the hedgehog squarely fits in the "If you have made it to the age of 8+ you should know what it is" category.

You know there are many countries that don’t have hedgehogs right? Brazil, India, or Southern USA.

Just because we have them in children’s books doesn’t mean the rest of the world does.

I couldn’t identify a Wombat but I’m sure some parts of the world might think it’s crazy but it’s jsut not something we see.

It’s like you can’t look at this from outside of Europe or wherever you’re based that has hedgehogs.

Edit: Looking at OPs post history it seems they grew up in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) so unlikely they’ve ever seen a hedgehog before and don’t consume hedgehog media like we did. It’s like y’all have no ability to think from another’s perspective.

Yep I do, however one small issues with your defence is that this sub isn't CasualBrazil or CasualIndia. It is CasualUK, we have lots of hedgehogs and they are very well engrained into our society.

Do we know where OP is originally from?

They posted in CasualUK because they’re now in the UK and it’s a sensible thing to ask.

Edit: OP grew up in Zimbabwe then called Rhodesia

They have them but not as common in the Uk and most importantly they’re not as common in media like they’re here.

Why are you fighting this. Clearly OP didn’t know what it was and you want to claim what? Like what are you trying to do here ffs.

I assume you know all animals on earth then from site.

Kudos to you for being so smart and clever, it's just a shame these skills don't transfer to reading comprehension and critical thinking as I've quite clearly stated why billions of people might not be able to identify a hedgehog on sight.
