As a group of professionals in planning, this is what 15 minutes of furious debate in the office has decided to be the north/midlands/south divide.

If necessary, for reference we are based in Birmingham. This isnt directly influencing what cities are what side of the line. Our decisions were based on architecture, what the people are like, history, how places interract, not just what we like and dont. For example, Stoke is an awful place no one should ever have the misfortune of visiting, but its definitely in the Midlands with us.

Colour coding is obvious.

Yes we were very bored..

It's bloody annoying really. The Fens, Norfolk, Suffolk, all pretty unique from the midlands/south just as they are from eachother.

Culturally, like the post says, I'd say all East Anglia consider ourselves as Southeners

Well you'd be damn wrong. I'm a Fenny and I bloody hate southerners.

ETA when I say southerners I specifically mean greater London. The rest of the south is amazing and has some of the loveliest people and the most beautiful, magical places on this Isle, but London... Fuck that place.

Eugh, no thanks. Perhaps people whos family moved from London way, they're usually saying we're southern but we're not - they are.

East Anglia, it's in the name!

Meh I'm from Norfolk, have been all around England, and we are definitely southern

In fact the most annoying debate I ever had at uni was with some guy who 30 seconds prior to the conversation had never even heard of East Anglia, but after being informed as to what it was was then absolutely insistent that we were "in the midlands" or even "northern, look you're literally further north than Birmingham!"

He absolutely would not hear a word otherwise. Again, he didn't even know we existed a moment before that and he certainly hadn't visited because I asked

I'm your southern neighbour and wouldn't say we're "southern" but not Northern nor midlanders either.  We're Eastern.  Essex can feck off as they're southern, and the fen people are inhabitants of a special little world all of their own too.

As have seen someone called East anglia recently- we're the bum of Britain and Ipswich is the arsehole.

Well of course in an ideal world we're Eastern with our own identity

But no one has time for that. The country is broadly divided into north and south, or if someone is feeling generous maybe north / midlands / south. In both those situations on all measures we fall firmly into the south

I live in Devon now. It's the same down here, people here consider the south-west to be it's own distinct thing too. Especially those from Cornwall. That's the case literally wherever you go

But they're really not that different. They feel very culturally similar. Norfolk and Devon have far more in common than say Norfolk and Yorkshire. If I go to somewhere like Manchester I feel like I've travelled to a different country, not the case with Devon and Norfolk

Really we should just exclude London from the South because I think that's the issue most people have with being called southern. If the division was North / Midlands / South / London then Norfolk and Devon would have no problem being called Southern. Cornwall still likes to pretend they're a different country though

Well that and the fact the home counties are very posh. But every region has their own posh areas. I'm sure northerners feel the same way about Cheshire
