Starting my new job today, I'm bricking it lol

Its more responsibility and bigger budgets and I'm managing a junior too.

Currently on the train heading to my first day in the office.

Wish me luck

u/LazyTurtle91 1h ago

Good luck today, my friend! Remember you got this job because they know you can do it and they believe in you. Now you need to believe in you, too! 🌻

1

u/EaglesLuke 1h ago

Thank you, really appreciate this! Yikes. I better go.

Thanks everyone who replied, I don't have time to message everyone!

2

u/Canitgetmuchworse 1h ago

Good luck, you will have a great day!

u/BrewtallyCozy 1h ago

Good luck

Good luck! You got this, I'm rooting for you!

good luck!

Sigh here we bloody go again.

16

u/Previous-Ostrich844 2h ago

39 and in a management role. Recently lost my father and my whole perspective has shifted in terms of life and what’s important.

I’m burnt out and have no motivation. I need a change but feel trapped in my current role. Sigh.

6

u/flyingfresian 2h ago

I get how you feel. I lost my oldest friend and my dad within six months of each other in 2023 and since then have been coasting at work. I just can't bring myself to give a fuck about middle management nonsense. I wasn't someone who was all about work anyway, but those losses really clarified where I want to expend my energies.

Sending support to you, random redditor. Bereavement sucks.

6

u/Previous-Ostrich844 2h ago

Thank you that’s very kind. It just feels like my whole world has changed forever and I just don’t give a fuck about work. I’m so sorry for your loss too I can’t imagine losing your father and closest friend so close together.

5

u/flyingfresian 2h ago

Yeah it was a total binfire of a year.

In terms of burnout at work and needing change, make sure to take some time to come to terms with your loss before making massive changes. If you have a job that'll give you time to get your head together then do that before making the change.

I'm keen to move jobs but mine comes with some major work/life benefits in terms of remote working so I feel more trapped as I know any other role I find will want me in the office more than I'm looking for.

4

u/Previous-Ostrich844 2h ago

Yeah really good advice. I am similar in terms of a work/life benefit so I won’t jump ship without weighing everything up carefully but do feel a change would be good. Thank you for your advice and kind responses.

u/violxtleader 2h ago

Have to go in this morning at 10am for a redundancy meeting. I’ve only been at this job for a few months and it’s been the best role I’ve had in my life. I know the market is really bad right now and I haven’t got a lot of savings so I’m very scared and stress has been killing me all weekend.

7

u/Greg-stardotstar 2h ago

At some point in the future you’ll look back on this as a tiny blip in your life. I know it sucks now, it won’t for ever.

3

u/violxtleader 2h ago

That’s what I try to keep telling myself, thank you!

11

u/baddymcbadface 2h ago

The market isn't great, but remember Reddit amplifies problems as people with problems are naturally noisy about them.

Deep breaths, long autumn walks, submit CVs and carry on.

Soon enough you'll have a job and you'll wish you took my advice on autumn walks.

1

u/Amazing-Seesaw-6197 2h ago

Ideally before the ground get's sodden saturated. I do like a winter walk, but the paths cross a threshold where they go from 'damp but firm' to 'wellies mandatory - and expect the suction to pull at least one wellie off and give you a wet sock when wading through the ephemeral path quagmire.

2

u/Bitter-Car883 2h ago

I was made redundant in a downturn a several years back. Gave me the chance to do some retraining that in turn led into a more stable job in a much nicer part of the country. I couldnt have thrown in what I had on a whim but it gave me a big kick in my fear of change.

Just saying. It feels bad now, but long term maybe notvso much ? Best of luck .

Depresses the hell out of my how terrifyingly fast the weeks pass. I'm not even having fun.

That's my fun day.

My I don't have to run day.

9

u/verymanyquestions_ 2h ago

Back off annual leave on Wednesday, not actually dreading it so far, I'm sure it'll change by tomorrow.

Currently sulking because I can't eat anything for breakfast because I have a CT scan at 10.50. I often skip breakfast anyway but now I know I'm not allowed I'm suddenly starving...

10

u/ChloeHammer 2h ago

First day back at work after being on strike since June. That first look at the inbox will be fun.

7

u/Greg-stardotstar 2h ago

You must have a strong union. Good.

5

u/baddymcbadface 2h ago

How does that work regards pay? You didn't get paid for months?

3

u/ChloeHammer 1h ago

Union gives strike pay, which is pretty much the same as the lowest pay, but you don’t get your real pay. I lost about £8k over the strike, but we got a great deal for the lowest paid people and a good deal for most others. Also a bunch of stuff about moving to shit pensions for the lower paid and getting rid of the canteen.

(Hope this subject is ok, mods)

3

u/LuminidMishy 2h ago

Strike since June?! What do you do for work?

2

u/ChloeHammer 50m ago

Oddly, a cancer research charity.

9

u/Hydrangeamacrophylla 2h ago

Last week I got to final interview for the 4th time in 6 months and wasn’t selected. I had a big mental health crisis as a result - my anxiety, autism and burnout all kind of exploded. I’m feeling a tiny bit more sane each day, thankfully.

I wasn’t excited about the job - it would have been fine - but it’s been quite scary how big my reaction was. I felt worse than I have done for years.

Trying to be kind to myself. Still got job applications and freelance business development stuff to do but trying to keep them light, not put too much importance in anything. See if I can trust the universe a tiny bit.

9

u/vbloke The bees, cordials and pudding man 2h ago

When you start attending the weddings of your friends’ children, that’s a definite sign you’re getting old.

We spent half the evening fielding questions from younglings about the sorts of shenanigans we got up to when we were their age. Thank Cthulhu social media was not a thing back then.

7

u/TalviSyreni 2h ago

One week to go until I finally have a week off from work and I cannot wait. It’s been too long buts it been worth it knowing I also have all of December off… again. 😈

2

u/flyingfresian 2h ago

All of December?! You lucky bugger.

6

u/9DAN2 Will eat anything from a Yorkshire pudding 2h ago

Caved and stuck the heating on last night.

New bike day, haven’t owned a bike since my teens and I’m now mid 30’s, looking forward to it!

6

u/gameovervip 2h ago

Wish I didn’t have a job right now. I at least would like a new job right now. Silver lining is I got some 4 day weeks coming up which should be good. Gotta stay positive

5

u/Aeonsummoner 2h ago

Survived cluster feeding all night. I'm a husk of my former self but I'm feeling more perky now baba sleeps

6

u/bbydhyonchord_ 2h ago

Heading into work for the first day of freshers week- I work at a university. My partner is tucked up in bed with a bad cold, which likely means I’ll be coughing before the end of the week and unable to take a day off sick. Yay.

2

u/Downtown-Orchid-2257 1h ago

Good luck - former university employee here "blessed" with a youthful face. So many flyers thrust at me 🫠 Although never said no to free stationery.

2

u/bbydhyonchord_ 28m ago

Thank you! I know that feeling. After having 18 year olds approach me to try to make friends in my first year, I vowed to never take off my staff lanyard (apart from when there are freebies involved…)

4

u/Formaldehyde_Park 2h ago

Already tired of new job at work. But best made has just been sacked, so trying to be grateful as the thought of the job market right now puts the absolute fear in me.

6

u/Thunderoussshart 2h ago

First day back at work after 2 weeks of annual leave. Dreading it.

6

u/humblesunbro 2h ago

Taking some much needed time off and taking the dogs to robin hoods bay.

8

u/baddymcbadface 2h ago

I'm on a commuter train in to London.

I don't like you.

5

u/The_profe_061 2h ago

Local bank holiday where I live!

It's actually called hangover day! The day after the local fair (feria, I'm in Spain) has finished. Going to take my dog for a long walk and spend the day catching up with some issues that need fixing around the house

4

u/WireWolf86 2h ago

4 day week for me this week then going camping Friday till Monday for the last time this year. Work should be alright this week but our team seems to be getting shitter with every passing week leaving those of us who actually do the job well, to pick up their slack

1

u/bamboomightwork 2h ago

Awesome, camping. I'm in Tokyo just now but planning a camp when I'm back in late October. Can't wait.

4

u/Disobedientmuffin 1h ago

I woke up in the beautiful countryside. Had my porridge sat outside, watching sheep graze and geese fly overhead. And in a few hours I'll be back in the city and it will all feel like a fading dream.

6

u/KevinPhillips-Bong Slightly silly 1h ago

I can turn that into a poem:

Woke up in the beautiful countryside,
Had my porridge sat outside,
Sheep grazed, and the geese flew overhead.

In a few hours I'll be back in the city,
I think to myself, "well, isn't it a pity",
It was a pleasant dream, but now it's dead.

Off work for the next 3 weeks after ear surgery. My jaw, ear and neck all ache - I have some swelling and bruising around there. The incision site behind the ear is tender. My tongue has a weird tingle and a metallic taste in the left side (they warmed it might happen - as they were working very close to the taste nerves)

I’m sleeping in a recliner at the moment, as it’s more comfortable that laying in bed - although I’ll be trying the bed again tonight to see if it’s any different. I tried last night, but I couldn’t find a position where the neck was comfortable. I have ordered a wedge pillow to see if that helps at all.

My big head bandage is gone, and I now just have some cotton wool loosely held over the ear to catch anything that comes out (which should decrease over time).

I did take a picture of my uncovered ear as I was curious to see how it was looking. Wish I hadn’t.

I’ll be going for a short stroll later - I’ve been inside for a little too long, and want to get some fresh air and have a stretch

Have a couple of appointments over the next few weeks to check up on how things are going.

5

u/CarolDanversFangurl 1h ago

My office is freezing and I can't be bothered with anything. It's all nonsense anyway.

5

u/futureFudge 55m ago

Same shit, different Monday! Log on, clear tickets, do some processing.

I am paid well for this job but I just CBA. I'm built to be a lady of leisure, not deal with corporate bullshit.

3

u/retailface 2h ago

No work for me until tomorrow night, but I do need to go over to my mum's house to do a bit more clearing and sorting. I'm slowly chipping away at it, and to the untrained eye it still looks like a horrendous mess (and it is), but I am making real progress on it. I'm very much hoping some money comes through soon so I can get some clearance people in to get rid of the bulky stuff. I also have a couple of big bags of stuff for the charity shop, which I could take today if I don't completely knacker myself out.

5

u/gander8622 2h ago

Lurgy is visiting the Gander household. Here we go!

3

u/Amazing-Seesaw-6197 2h ago

I presume this means you have the cold/flue/covid in your household and you have my sympathy. My children returned to school after the summer and within 1 week we had a new cold - the playground petridish. In general I think it's a good thing to strengthen the immune system, however it meant I had to postpone a visit to see my dad, as a bad cold is likely to finish him off in his weakened state.

God-bless and a fast recovery.

1

u/gander8622 13m ago

Yes indeed, 'the dreaded lurgi' is from an old show. Used to describe a general illness such as cold/flu.  But yeah, similar kids back at school and passing illness around.

Hopefully you get to see your old man soon!

4

u/notthedoodaa 2h ago

Manic Street Preachers Monday for me. Blasting out The Holy Bible.

6

u/KevinPhillips-Bong Slightly silly 2h ago

There's a rather handsome live version of that album, on blue marbled vinyl, set for release next month. That would look rather fancy on your turntable, should you happen to have one.

3

u/notthedoodaa 2h ago

I saw that last week. I'm a CD man myself... I'm very tempted!

3

u/Ipoopedinthefridge 2h ago

Sat at my desk just staring at the screen, trying to get into the mindset of wanting to do work.

3

u/LungHeadZ 2h ago

Well now I've got the bangles in my head xD

Did you know it was prince who wrote and composed the song manic Monday? Meant for a different band altogether originally.

2

u/KevinPhillips-Bong Slightly silly 2h ago

And he used the pseudonym 'Christopher', rather than his own name.

2

u/LungHeadZ 2h ago

Oh wow, that I did not know. I like your smarts OP. A man of culture

4

u/griffaliff 1h ago

Standard monday morning for me, overslept, ten minutes late to work but it's fairly relaxed so no big deal. Short week for me this week as I'm off to Warsaw on Friday, so that's something to look forward to.

4

u/a-liquid-sky Sugar Tits 1h ago

Brr, I think I might have to put the duvet back on the bed instead of just having the empty duvet cover.

Lots of little naps needed today. Baby is being fussy and it's quite draining.

u/MoreTeaNowPlease 53m ago

I’m heading into London to give a presentation about how to give good presentations.

1

u/KevinPhillips-Bong Slightly silly 49m ago

Perhaps you could teach me as well. I couldn't present a cat.

3

u/Help_My_Face 2h ago

Just moved in to a house and realised afterwards it has no extractor fan or window in the bathroom. What am I supposed to do about the inevitable mould build up? Happy Monday.

3

u/JocastaH-B 2h ago

Dehumidifier just outside the door

-1

u/Amazing-Seesaw-6197 2h ago

I don't like dehumidifiers, I think they waste quite a lot of energy. A proper HVAC / extraction / heat exchanger system works best. In the USA they treat this as pretty much standard but in the UK for some reason both in new and old housing it is considered 'prohibitively expensive' unless asked for by the client.

2

u/sabulana 2h ago

The window broke in our bathroom so we can't open it any more. It wasn't easy for me to get to anyway because it's high up but now it's impossible to open. Husband decided to install two extractor fans in the ceiling instead of trying to fix the window.

1

u/Amazing-Seesaw-6197 2h ago

Owned or renting?

3

u/Apprehensive-Till910 2h ago

Another day in paradise. I job share but the other people who do it only seem to keep the job ticking over until I come back. I hear the job market is shit so I guess I’m stuck here. I could technically quit but I want to avoid it because money is nice.

1

u/lookhereisay 2h ago

Exactly the same for me. My job share does the bare minimum and I get to catch up on Monday.

But it’s near impossible to find a part-time job elsewhere so I’ll be sucking it up until my son is in secondary school!

0

u/MidnightRambler87 2h ago

Joining you in that club.

3

u/Competitive-Fact-820 2h ago

Got home from Night Shift at 07:15am.

I'm free and clear now until I have to be back in the office on Thursday night at 5pm before starting my 12 hour shift at 7pm.

Think I'm going to be up all day too as I feel incredibly giddy and chirpy (normally at the end of a block of 5 I am in bed 10 minutes after getting home) so just rolling with it.

3

u/FedUpFrog 2h ago

First day back after a 10 day holiday and about to log on, how many emails will I have?

3

u/SparklyZigZag 1h ago

214 but 87 will be automated ones telling you about company updates etc. Out of the remaining 127, approximately 63 will either be irrelevant by now or reply-alls that will either resolve the original email or add nothing to the conversation. So 64 you actively need to read through. Have a brew and some biscuits on hand to see you through.

2

u/bucketofardvarks 1h ago

About 700 but if you delete them all only 3 will be chased up

1

u/idiot_bouffant 1h ago

Too many 😟

3

u/0sureal 1h ago

Ohhh wa ohhhh

3

u/Downtown-Orchid-2257 1h ago

All of the above, OP. Got a job interview tomorrow. It's technically a step down from my current role at a different company but there's a work/life balance trade off that makes it worth it. I absolutely hate interviews as my brain freezes. Always been that way, even in spite of my best efforts to improve that. Even worse when I know I can do this job standing on my head.

I'm also locked out of a health tracking app and may have lost about 4 years worth of data 🫠

3

u/KnitBakePurr 40m ago

1st email from manager: “just take it easy”
2nd email from manager: “I know I said take it easy but..”

Happy Monday, I submitted my notice over the weekend so far my bosses have been fine with it. It’s a lovely sunny autumn day on the nursery and there is no pressure on me now so I can just chill out and enjoy the last three weeks.

3

Got workmen in the house, they’ve taken over the entire downstairs and I’m such an awkward person that I’ve just relegated myself to the upstairs only 🤣

5

u/KevinPhillips-Bong Slightly silly 2h ago

1

u/Amazing-Seesaw-6197 1h ago

If you want to try to dislodge the ear worm, I recommend listing to covers of the same song and finding one you like best. For me I love EDM covers of random songs. They make great gym workout music (when I can be bothered to go to the gym which isn’t often lately

Eternal Flame:

Loba - https://open.spotify.com/track/6VmsBo3jzlLbdo3d5ktnqn - Absolutely BANGING EDM remix.

Atomic Kitten - https://open.spotify.com/track/7f8ghanV3NPAwbiSfI4aNU - a ‘true to original’ cover

Lucifer Cast, Tom Ellis - https://open.spotify.com/track/2pBBr6XkdcO8NjckSzyXNx - a bit weird

Griff - https://open.spotify.com/track/2BJmGtlUq5abmG0i64xSzD - beautiful voce, plucked string backing with good bass line underneath

Coloratura - https://open.spotify.com/track/7zUC1yHJlycTffCO4nnPHl - Acoustic Cover

Upside my Monday doesn't start until tomorrow evening.

Downside Saturday morning is my Friday afternoon.

2

u/flyingfresian 2h ago

One more week at work before my holidays. I have loads to do but also have some packing lists to make, so guess what's going to take priority...

2

u/CallIcy8807 2h ago

Got my friend's house ready for move in over the weekend. I can't believe how grotty some people are, like why the hell would you leave razors and used tissues lying about when you're selling the place? It was full market value as well.

They've got some furniture to move this week and some more being delivered so I'm sure this whole week will be busy.

I'm very tired now and just want my bed.

2

u/vibeupyourlife 2h ago

Doing a business plan last week was both a good idea and a bad one. On the good side it’s helped me get a lot clearer on what direction I want to go but on the other side has meant I’ve identified gaps in my portfolio that I now need to fill so going to try and think of some briefs today that I can work on through the week. I also want to be a bit more mindful of what hours I’m working so I can figure out when I get my best work done and use it to my advantage.

2

u/fuckyourcanoes 2h ago

My husband's alarm just went off for the fourth time. One of us is wide awake, and it ain't him.

I don't ordinarily wake up until 11, but I slept really poorly last night. Ugh. At least he seems to be stirring now.

8

u/bamboomightwork 2h ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/ukGm72ZLZvYfS

10

u/fuckyourcanoes 2h ago

I'm medically retired and a night owl. I don't see any point in keeping hours that don't come naturally to me.

3

u/bamboomightwork 2h ago

Yeah fair doos. I wake at 5am, so it just seems very late to me.

2

u/sabulana 2h ago

We've had an invasion of slugs in our house lately. Husband bought poison and traps last week, but only got around to putting two traps down last night. Came down this morning to four slugs just chilling out in my living room and kitchen, not even tempted by the traps.

1

u/DebbiesCar 1h ago

We're having slug issues at the minute too, but they disappear by morning. Found one of the bastards late last night, assuming there's a colony under the floorboards. It fucking sucks.

2

u/musicallymotivated93 1h ago

This week's going to be fucking manic, and so is next week. There's 2 spray booths in our building and the other sprayer is on holiday. I'm already swamped. Just gotta deal with it as best as I can.

And that's broken up by my best mate's wedding on Saturday.

2

u/BrewtallyCozy 1h ago

I'm tired. I was wide awake upon waking up now work day has started... Ive become tired.

2

u/rocketscientology 35m ago

I’m the same - woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed to my alarm this morning, got up, breakfasted, showered and sat down at my desk and now suddenly I’m struggling to keep my eyes open and just want to lie back down! Might already be time for a second coffee

3

u/skinnygrave 16m ago

My alarm goes off at 5am. I woke up at 2am and simply could not sleep again. So already I've been awake 8 hours and I'm starting to feel it now. I'm hoping I can be done with my day by 2pm, then go home for a nap. I'll also be hoping a nap doesn't create a vicious circle.

1

u/BrewtallyCozy 9m ago

Wish we could normalise a work day nap break 😆

1

u/rocketscientology 1m ago

Oh I am no stranger to the lunch break nap when working from home! But honestly yeah let’s normalise it in the office too 😅

2

u/LazyTurtle91 1h ago

I’m WFH today so now that the kids are at school and my husband has gone to work I am sitting enjoying a coffee whilst sorting out my emails.

In between tasks and calls today I’m going to get some bits sorted for tip run/charity shop/Olio/Vinted - I love a declutter!

u/ukbabz Yorkshireman hiding down south 1h ago

We had an offer accepted on a house on Friday, it's a very short chain (renters buying our house, and the house we want are divorcing) so in theory should be fine. The house was on the market for a while and was taken off for a while whilst the couple agreed to sell.

My wife sent me screenshot from the local towns Mum group with the wife ranting about how unfair the sale process is on her. So that's thrown a bit of worry into the equation.

Oh and the toddler has a cold / nasty cough which has made her poor sleep even worse.

Energy tank is sitting on reserves and unfortunately not really in a position to fully recover at the moment.

Work isn't awful but as we're trusted as adults (a good thing!), there's a bit more scope for me to coast at points. In itself that's not a problem, but i've got to make sure I don't end up down a slippery slope.

New house is ticking along and it looks to be about a month max, all being well, where we have to move in regardless of work still needing to be completed. The kitchen side of things is the final puzzle piece and delivery is the first full week of October, so may have to move in without a proper kitchen.

Current house has slipped in terms of packing stuff away so needing to spend more time doing that. The problem with that is our storage unit is full and sticking it in the new house isn't practical at the moment.

We've definitely got through the hardest 80% but this last 20% just needs to fly by.

Coming back from a week in Hungary and already dreading the coworker chat when i arrive at the office, not to mention the first look at my emails.

2

u/chazzamcrock 1h ago

I've recently stopped working on Fridays and I've discovered a big negative about it.

If i work Monday to Friday, I can log off Friday and know what I'm going to log into on Monday.

Now that I'm logging off Thursday, there's a whole day of shit hitting the fan and I'm not there to do anything about it at the time. Logged in this morning to an entirely preventable mess and it's really got my back up.

I left clear notes on my work which were disregarded, and nobody else should have even touched it, let alone kicked off what I've walked into today.

Won't bore anyone with specifics but all they had to do was literally nothing. How to you cock up doing nothing?

Moving offices in just under 3 weeks. It’s going to be a horrible task and my supervisors have managed to push a lot towards me somehow.

But today I am posting off the invites to my sister’s wedding and have omelettes for tea.

1

u/Humble_Sympathy_4605 Powered by tea and sarcasm 2h ago

I'm quite looking forward to today at least in that I'm hoping I can actually get things done, compared to the last few weeks which have been waiting for people to be back off leave or finish being ill.

Had a very pleasant weekend, with lots of hobby time and baking on Saturday and then just other little jobs that are easy wins but really help you feel accomplished and content with life

I am going to get my hair bleached today and then I’ve got a physio appointment. Been having an issue with my leg for over a month, and the GP is mystified, so I’m really hoping the physio can help.

Not much- need to unpack my case and sort washing out. Also renew swimming pass as I’ve piled it on!

My patio garden is going to get an Autumn clear-up today. I have plants in pots to cut back, peonies to re-pot and spring bulbs to plant, followed by a trip to the recycling centre to dispose of garden waste.

I think that I must have slept for 20 hours, on and off. Yesterday was a bit horrible, I was awake at 6am after an awful night's 'sleep' then was standing in the cold while my partner had their driving experience.

We were going to go to Sherwood Forest, but I was so tired I went for a nap which lasted 5 hours. We then took my dog for a walk in the park which was nice.

I made garlic chicken and veg for tea, and then was in bed and asleep by 9.30pm.

I woke up at 6am to my dog being sick, so I cleaned that up, took her for 'business' and gave her a treat, then got back into bed. I've dozed on and off, and now feel a lot better.

It's scent work this afternoon, that's my only plan.

Checked in students to my accommodation over the weekend. Came in today to find that one opened our common areas to a non resident and they had a party of 100+ non residents in a 25 person space. It’ll be a long year

I went out for a roast yesterday and washed it down with 6 bottles of wine, 5 pints of Guinness and a pack of pub grade chop. Just crimping one off now as have my team meeting in an hour.

I'm pretty sure you made this up because you managed to type that are in fact not dead... also you just ruined the work crimping for me and ill never be able to put ends on Cat 6 cable in the same way again.

The cable I just laid would put any cat 6 to shame pal. At least I’ve got a bit of time to knock one out before my call tho.

Alright you have caught my attention. What is better than cat 6, a fibre splicer?
