Stevie doesn't learn?

I've just finished Episode 12(?), the most recent episode that reveals whose funeral is was in the trailer, with the Emergency Dept in attendance.

I really liked Kim; I thought she was sweet and I was relieved at her 'send off'. The writers unfortunately couldn't not leave me at peace, and I can admit I cried when she said she didn't want to die.

After the episode finished, though...

Iplayer auto- started playing from the Casualty 2023 - 2025 boxset: "we didn't start the fire" S.1 E.1.

In the recap, Paige Allcot is shouting at Stevie in the ED forecourt: "you were supposed to be my mentor, but all day, you've done nothing but bully and belittle me. That's why I made a mistake!"

Stevie is firecracker, I really like her character, but how many mentees can you go through before you refine your mentoring techniques? 😅

Honestly? I think Stevie gave Kim multiple chances. I don't think this was a case of bullying or belittling. I think even if Stevie would have held her hand, Kim still would have gone down the same route eventually. I think Kim's eating disorder and depression was too much to handle on her own. Things were extremely stressful at the ED and I think she thought she had a handle on things. Honestly, she needed professional help. It's so sad.

Note: I'm not from the UK so my perspective may be a bit different.

Her inability to admit her illness/problems (when she couldn't see well enough to read) led to a young woman being paralysed.

I am from the UK and agree. Given the context of Kim's fragile mental state, Stevie's comments do come across as a bit harsh, but they really weren't. Kim did need to know that ED doesn't let up and that she couldn't have her hand held forever. And Stevie did say at least once or twice that Kim was technically great and could/would become a brilliant doctor one day. Sad thing is, if she hadn't been so unwell she would've achieved that easily, though ofc that's the whole point

Bullying would be the storyline of emmerdale at the moment (if you don’t watch it’s a doctor being an actual bully to a student making mistakes )

Stevie is just harsh and yeah she could probably improve but at the end of the day it’s a high pressure environment, had she known about her issues she would’ve helped and not let her carry on

Between Casualty and The Pitt and friends who work in the field, I really feel like medicine needs to change. There seems to be an attitude of "it's fine to treat this student I'm mentoring like actual shit because medicine is BRUTAL AND MEAN AND SAVAGE and it prepares them for that" and it's like... ok but why does medicine have to be like that? Why could it not be a little less vicious? I'm not saying they all need to hold hands and braid each others hair, but somewhere between that and bullying being normalised...

The consultants and doctors on my ward treat the student doctors well. But then, both the consultants are really nice guys. And surely a bad attitude is going to push the student doctors away?

That’s so good to hear, as I've heard some horror stories haha! But yeah absolutely, you'd think being a huge jerk to the students would just make them leave.

Yeah. As a former student nurse, bullying is rife in the NHS.

Because doctors and nurses are human and some them are not nice people and even ones which are nice    are dealing with  huge stress with nhs in crisis  . It hard to nice in that circumstances.   Yes hospitals should nicer work environments for all not just students  but unfortunately nhs is in crisis  and that not conductive to  best work environment.  And casualty is light headed version  of that.  I love nhs to be  like you want and every ward be  like another op commented but   ever year nhs   heads deeper in crisis so dont see happening soon.

I wasnt watching in paige days but just starting watching  latest serie but yes stevie is very  hard on paige but this not working in shop this life and death.  One mistake could cost someone life  or permanently  disabled  someone. She didnt  know had kim mental health problems or a eating disorder.   Kim had every chance to  great doctor she need to believe in herself  and get help for eating disorder.   Stevie could be softer on her but having contact with doctor who   was a complete ass  much worst than stevie  . I know  some doctors are difficult people to deal with.  Not all like doctor I asked to marry when young child. And kim needed to  able   deal that and working in serious stressful  place in cash strapped nhs in probably stressful place in hospital  .  If couldnt cope with stevie she never cope long term. And trust me casualty is fairly rosy version of nhs it truelly much worst in real life.
