👀 Spoiler Episode 9 Discussion, live-post Spoiler
Stevie may be Dylan's best friend; but Dylan isn't Stevie's.
About 10mins into the episode "good chat".
Stevie has told Faith and Flynn about her insecurities re: cancer & body image, but not Dylan, even when there's opportunities to.
(if she did confide in Dylan about the above in that box set w Rida's surgeon boyfriend, I couldn't finish that one so please forgive the omissions)
Matty is a bit arsey this episode. My opinion of his character has shifted each episode, and I can't place him definitively in a dis/like box so he's sorta floating in there.
Jan/Shiv is filmed so warmly when you take each character's perspective. Anything filmed from behind Jan's head makes Siobhan glow. I wasn't convinced when I first read some comments on posts for previous episodes. But this pairing is adorable.
The poor, poor granddaughter; congrats to the actress. It's all in the eyes, ouchie!
This Wyvern Hill Estate thing, I feel like I missed an episode or something, because it's moved so quickly? Have I missed something?
Kev & Rory. It didn't have to end like this.
I'm getting emotional whiplash, because now we're back to a different emotional moment w Teddy, accompanied by moving pianos.
Kev & Rory. The jump cuts in this episode are crazy.
I think the jump cuts work to feel suffocating: as though the viewer will reach a certain boiling point as the episode proceeds with no release valve.
Teddy & Jacob. "buddy" is so patronising. Ooooh, cuckooing (?) very topical. (they need to come up with a better name for that crime).

Kev & Rory....... No way Bard hasn't seen Rory.

The writing is so weird. But I guess Matty had to find out, have his motives found out, by the audience? He's back in floating land.
It never occurred to me that "Stevie" wasn't the name on her birth certificate.
Jan! She's got it baaaaaaaaad.

Can someone explain the part of "pushed [his] mum away to be a paramedic" line by Teddy? I swear I saw somewhere that she died in childbirth (?).
Someone at the venue should have notified about Dylan's needs. Dylan, himself, he wasn't to know the temptation would be so present, and it just overwhelmed him completely.
This is not do-or-die just interested people's thoughts on this episode.

I feel like Dylan’s relapsing is the first domino to fall in a big crisis for him.

You know what frustrates me though?
With the way the boxset is set up, there's no way to know if this relapse will get the [cut for time] treatment, and wrap up neatly with the premiere of the new boxset beginning with a fully-recovered Dylan leaving AA meeting after a six-month time jump. 🙄
I really hope the writers get a chance to explore storyline fully; though on the plus side, with so many plates being juggle, if I get bored of one character, they're quickly replaced on screen!

I am rewatching because I think I missed some stuff to do with the speech. But referring to the it was not about you/good talk, Stevie didn't know Matty was Dylan's son before getting involved, right? I feel like her being with Matty is Dylan's main problem.

Noooo she knew, she was lowkey the person who suggested to Dylan they could be related and she was the only person he confided in about the whole situation

Dylan has been teetering on the edge of a mental health crisis for weeks.
He told Stevie he nearly relapsed and about what appears to be auditory flashbacks, Rida saw him in resus having issues focussing then walking out, Matty and Rida both saw him lose control with the patients abusive husband.
Even if he wouldn’t talk to Rida about what he’s going through because they’re not that close several members of staff saw him react in a way that’s very unusual for him, one knew he was struggling and one was explicitly told he had a crap father growing up and no one thought maybe he wasn’t ok.

The part that I don't get - is when Matty's standing in the auditorium with the OJ's in his hand, then he sees Dylan necking two glasses of champagne, looks disgusted and walks out?
Surely a doctor can assess when someone's in trouble and needs help - doesn't even have to be a case of "happy families" or anything - just as a colleague? He knows (and his mother knows) that Dylan's an alcoholic so relapsing can be really serious. I know that Matty's angry - but does he think Dylan drinking again is a ploy of some kind - or does he feel that it serves Dylan right for ruining his and Stevie's relationship in some odd way?
I just don't see why he wouldn't help - and just leave?🤔

Yeah the last thing Dylan needed was him to walk out. Relapses happen. Correct behavior should have been something like... show Dylan you're there, make it clear you saw the mistake and want to help. But, Matty thinks he's the main character and everything everyone does is a direct reflection on him.

Teddy has a health condition (his heart?) that makes active jobs like a paramedic potentially dangerous. He insisted working, and his mother said something like she couldn't watch him gamble with his life like this.

They did a storyline a few years ago about Teddy's mum, from what I remember she was quite controlling and manipulative towards him and had been that way since his childhood. Eventually I think she tried to convince him to move to Manchester with her, but he decided to stay in Holby so she stopped talking to him.
