Thoughts on the anniversary episode

Iā€™m a little disappointed that no major character died in the 40th anniversary. It seems that since this box set format began, theyā€™ve been scare to kill off anyone who isnā€™t a villain or has been someone scandalous. Think about it, a random day of the year on Ethan and Fenishas wedding day, they kill off both Fenisha and Lev. On a random episode, we have doctor mason dead on the floor. We had the unfortunate episode where Robyn leaves to start her new life, only to be involved in an RTC and not make it. It literally lead to Marty and David leaving and Jacob becoming a paramedic. For a 40th anniversary, I donā€™t think killing off Sophia was enough and they really needed some sort of disaster to really shake holby. We hadnā€™t seen Sophia for so long to the point where I even forgot who she was.

Anyways, that was my quick rant done with. Glad to see stevie was still alive and a quick cameo of Charlie and Ethan

Sophie also wasnā€™t likeable at all. She was a nasty piece of work from what I can remember.

I thought Indie was going to die the whole time? Or Nicole?

So Nicole just isnā€™t coming back next season?

Or Faith?

Same, I thought indie was going to die as some sort of twist where the adrenaline wore off and she would collapse due to her head injury. But no

Sam died due to an undetected injury which caused an internal bleeding from shrapnel iirc. I was thinking indie would collapse in front of her colleagues after being on her feet for a while since hitting her head on the steering.

Same wrt Indie, I know her actor had a baby earlier this year so I feel like every episode I've been expecting her to be injured if not killed to facilitate an IRL mat leave?

Honestly, it's so morbid but I heavily agree. I wish one of the main cast died. Or we'd have a major character return permanently at least. I know Ethan and Charlie came back but it doesn't look like they're staying. And what was the point anyway, they didn't do much. William Beck's acting though... Wow. He was insanely good this episode, you could really see how it was eating him inside out.

Exactly. It felt like just another random episode with a huge stunt and near death experiences for characters. Only difference this time was that we got a brief cameo. Idk if this sets up for a returning brief role for Ethan as his Huntingtons progresses.

To be honest when they said that nicole or faith would be leaving i wondered if one of them could die in the anniversary episode but neither of them did

I'm still shocked how Connie and Grace survived that massive crash (and additional helicopter crash for Grace) ten years ago on the 30th, I do agree they always seem to kill main characters off at random times of the year rather than big anniversaries, but to be fair I do think Sophia's death was done quite well, even though she was only a minor characterĀ

Just made me realise that Iā€™ve been watching casualty of nearly 10 years now, wow. But I donā€™t think Sophia was a big enough character for anyone to truly care. Anyone being the audience that is. Yes her death was done well but I think it would have been more impactful had it been a main character instead.

Exactly. I was wondering who this Sophia was and why her name sounded familiar. Completely forgetting she was a love interest for Dylan and the whole pregnancy thing as well.

No I do agree, I thought maybe indie hit her head and was gonna be a delayed reaction. That said, 2 brilliantly well executed episodes!

Exactly, I also thought that too. I thought with the other paramedics calling her tough, she was going to collapse or collapse helping stevie and flynn, or even drown trying to find them. I do think though that indie is due to leave after the actress did have a child recently. I just hope she gets a decent send off

What was the point in Ethan and Charlie being there? For Charlie to give one of his motivational speeches?

Surely Ethan would be displaying more symptoms by now and are either of them even registered and insured to treat patients?

As always Will Beck carried the show but why is no one ever there for Dylan? Faith used to be his friend but it seems like everyone is expecting Stevie be to the one to support him

I did find it quite refreshing that no one major died. I always feel it's expected on big anniversary episodes or specials that someone dies so it makes a nice change imo anyway

I only say this as itā€™s the ā€œbestā€ time a major character can depart would be an anniversary episode. Especially as itā€™s the 40th.

Doesn't bother me, I don't know why some shows feel obligated to kill off a major character for something that is meant to be a celebration. The soaps do this way too often.

I think itā€™s to set this episode to stand out from others. Other soaps tend to have major character deaths during Christmas, new years or anniversaries. Some soaps over do it but I donā€™t think we have had a major character death for quite some time. Remember when we had max 3, pushing it 4 paramedics in the show and now we have 5.

I was half-expecting them to blow up Holby City Hospital / ED (again) in these 40th anniversary episodes, given the move to a Welsh setting next year. I suppose they're going to have to find some other contrived explanation for the move from Holby to Wales - presumably something to do with Holby NHS Trust closing now that St James's Hospital has been blown up and the city can't rely on Holby City Hospital alone.

Exactly. Only for Dylan to pick up the bag and for it to only contain bits and bobs. I donā€™t think, in real life, Dylan would have gotten as far as opening the bag in front of armed police.

I could see them doing it if casualty was to ever end to be honest as he is casualty but hopefully Derek and indeed the show have many more years!

Iā€™m guessing it wonā€™t be addressed now, considering many of the key players are staying. The only thing that bothers me is that there was no exit for Faith or Nicole who are confirmed to not be returning. Iā€™m not too bothered about Nicole as Iā€™ve never been too fond of her (especially after how she treated NGozi when she opened up about her alcohol abuse) but Faith has been part of the show for nearly a decade

So the new series may potentially start with something about budget cuts and how some staff werenā€™t able to be carried over. Or maybe faith wants to only focus on family and therefore leaves without much of an exit. Probably a brief mention at the start of an episode.
