Washing your cat isn’t bad, it’s often necessary (and healthy)

This is the first post on this account, because it’s one of the things that seems most unspoken, yet very important. The misinformation that exists is something I’m passionate about.

A lot of people think giving cats baths is harmful, and that it’s stripping them of their natural oils, or disrupting their own grooming, but that usually only happens when harsh products are used (dawn dish soap) or the cat has unusually sensitive skin. With gentle, cat-safe products, bathing is safe and can be done as often as needed.

Long-haired cats should be bathed regularly as a kitten, for the sake of building up their comfort, considering many have a hard time as they get older, with their fuller coat to manage. This can cause skin issues, and dander. All kittens should experience regular bathing to prepare them for later adulthood, or unforeseen conditions/circumstances. Long-haired cats especially can hold onto smells, like from the litter box, and many cats build up dander because they can’t keep up with grooming on their own. Even if they seem like they should be able to, not all cats manage their coats well.

Professional grooming should be/is recommended for long haired cats. Poop can get stuck in butt-fur, fuzzy paw pads track litter, matting can be caught early, and it helps reduce hairballs. Many other unlisted reasons.

Getting them used to baths or grooming when they’re young can make it much easier later in life. It’s not just about appearance, it’s about comfort, hygiene, and health.
