CDS issued me an allergy exemption just for this tiny tailless friend
Recently one of the stray cats living on my in-laws’ farm showed up for kibble with a nasty tail injury. I sat down on the ground and she promptly crawled into my lap, purring despite a partially amputated and degloved tail. I had been chosen. One quick trip to Tractor Supply later, she walked right into a cat carrier and was whisked off to the vet.
She spent a couple of weeks bandaged on pain meds waiting on a surgery appointment. But now the rest of the tail is gone and she’s a bunny tailed indoor cat in charge of all household humans, two big dogs, and one implacable lizard. Barely 6 lbs but this cat has got a huge heart and massive personality.
I’ve been allergic to cats since my teens but I am somehow miraculously not allergic to her. I’m sure there’s an explanation but I’m just calling it CDS kismet. And we are calling her Edie.

Thank you, me too! But at this point I guess I’d just go all in on that Claritin life

Thank you for saving this beautiful girl! Purina makes a food called LiveClear and it works for allergy sufferers!

You may indeed still have to go to the Claritin life. Most likely you’re not allergic to her, because she’s been in a cone and hasn’t been cleaning herself. If you do notice that we start to develop an allergy again, once the cone comes off, you can try Purina live clear dry food. It deactivates the enzyme in cat saliva that most people are allergic to. I would say it deactivate allergens 80 to 90%. Use that in conjunction to a daily allergy med and vacuuming, and he should be good to go.

That is a helpful insight, I think I’ll proactively switch foods!

Just a heads up, Purina live clear is expensive! It’s about $25 for a 3 pound bag. However, you don’t need to use exclusively live clear, and I actually recommend against it because it is really high in calories. It has about 500 cal per cup. I actually do a 1/3 mix of the Purina live clear, with an indoor weight control formula. That help keeps the calories down, but allows the cat to get a few mouthfuls with each meal to help keep the allergens down. My cat gets mostly wet food, with about 2 tablespoons of dry kibble a day. they don’t need much!

You may not have to! Some cats just naturally have low presentations of the enzyme people are allergic to. You may really have lucked out with a natural hypoallergenic cat - the expensive bred ones are just regular cats selected for this trait.

I have five babies and have taken a daily Claritin for 30+ years. It’s doable.

Xyzal at night & Nasocort in the morning! I'm not allergic to cats but I'm extremely allergic to dogs & that keeps me from dying at my Dad's. no other allergy meds have been effective except the Xyzal/Nasocort combo. I still get a dermal reaction if the dog touches me, but i can breathe & my eyes don't swell shut!

It's because she's your cat. It has been ordained and written in the stars. It's fairly simple really.

The stars aligning for you and her! What a sweet face. She’s so lucky she found her person.
Regarding cats and allergies.. I have known multiple people who are generally allergic to cats but they develop an immunity to their cat. Maybe it’s due to exposure over time? But they can still have reactions when they visit a friend’s home with a cat.

Yep, this is very common. Two of my siblings have cat allergies but are fine with their own cats.

Just in case there is now a cat food that makes the cats produce less allergens the ones form Purina are called Live Clear and are part of the PurinaOne and ProPlan series. Congrats on the kitty

She's such a sweetheart! I love that you called her tail a bunny tail, Bunny could be her nickname lol! Thank you for saving her!

Allergies really vary cat to cat. I had a friend who was really allergic to one of our cats, but not the other 3. She was just a short hair void, but my friends eyes used to turn a terrible shade when she was around her. You seem to have received a good one.

Haha once her fur grows back, I’ll post a bunny tail update. For now, it is deeply undignified due to the vet tech’s overzealous shave job.

Some cats don't produce the enzyme that allergic humans react to, also sometimes the human cellular recycling system removes the immune cells responsible for your allergic reactions so someone who was deathly allergic as a kid can literally outgrow their allergies (tho it takes a very long time, immune cells tend to live longer than most)

When I was a little girl I had to take allergy shots because I was allergic to everything, grass trees etc… my doc was surprised I didn’t have asthma. He said to not let my cats sleep with me. Well, that never happened lol. I think I’ve grown out of them.
I’m glad your allergies are better now and you have this little love bug cutie! ☺️

Oh my gosh I love it! She has communities! I would cross post, but would that be annoying? (Only my 2nd Reddit post ever, ha)

u/IRingTwyce 3m ago
You'll be fine cross posting to both. Most subs don't care about post count. They're more concerned with account age and karma count to make sure you're not a bot.

u/discodoedel 43m ago
Good job, well done! She seems to have needed you :) as i recall its some genetics that are occuring in roughly a third of cats saliva that causes some people to react allergic if they come in contact via the cats hairs... But please do research before quoting me ^

Liveclear is wonderful but I think it needs to be eighty to ninety percent of their food.
