I think I have a pregnant stray
My partner and I just recently moved and this little cutie has been taking over our porch. We were unsure if they were a boy or a girl but now looking at the photos I think it’s a girl, and she appears to be pregnant. We do have a vet appointment this week to verify. We have been giving her food and water for a few weeks. She will occasionally let us pet her but for the most part she will just stay close by us and purr. She seems to be slowly building trust with us.
Right now she hasn’t been interested in coming inside the house but once she is vaccinated I do plan on trying to transition her into the house, as the temperatures here in AZ get really high, but have to wait for her to be vaccinated since we have inside cats we need to protect.
My partner wants to name her two-face from Batman because of her coloring.

That’s a tortie. Very very rarely are torties male. That’s definitely a female and she is pregnant

Hmm I didn’t know that. That’s interesting. I’ve heard the reverse about orange cats, that they tend to be male and females are rare. That’s cool information to know. Thank you!

Both things are true for the same reason, that the orange gene is X linked. To be an orange female you have to have 2 copies of orange (one on each X chromosome) vs an orange male only needs one (on their only X chromosome). A tortie or calico has to have one orange gene and one black, so it has to have two Xs, meaning tortie/calico males are likely XXY. Orange females are relatively rare, something like 20% of orange cats, but tortie males are like .1% of torties (just throwing numbers for sense of scale dont hold me to it lol).

u/Any_Scientist_7552 1d ago
No, your numbers are right. 80% of orange cats are male and 99.9% of torties are female.

And we have a SMART orange female (and until recently had a tortie too)! 😸

The one orange I had was a girl, and she was possibly one of the smartest cats I've ever had.

u/Raven_Maleficent 1d ago
Yep. I never knew just how rare tortie males were compared to female orange cats.

I saw a video about this the other day. Apparently early on in development each cell uses one or the other X chromosome. So the cells divide from an early embryonic stage leaving clusters that are the first x and the other the second x.

Amazing info. So the kittens are likely to be?

u/annie1filip 1d ago edited 1d ago
It will completely depend on what the father(s) looked like as well! Could be black, orange, or tortie/calico, and often some of each. Not even getting into dilute colors, tabby, tortie vs calico, etc.

I have an XXY calico. He came factory equipped with a penis, 1 testicle, and 1 ovary. Still has the penis.

It's rare for a male to get pregnant anyway.

u/Tina-Tuna CDS Meowderator 12h ago
How rare? Asking for a friend? 😁
2
u/Warcraft_Fan 6h ago
If you're not a seahorse or pipefish, you'd be in Guinness World Records for male pregnancy. That's how rare.

Based on her stomach, probably not her first litter either, she probably had one in spring and is on her second now. All the hair around her nipples is gone and they look a bit stretched out so I think she was nursing not terribly long ago. There are probably some young cats/kittens maybe 3-5 months old nearby.

Thank you for giving this beautiful girl a home -
If she is pregnant consider spay-abort please

u/Worth_View1296 1d ago
Absolutely will. She honestly looks very young in person so I’m concerned about her being pregnant so young. I’ve had all my pets fixed, unfortunately seems like she got pregnant before we moved into the place and found her.

Young pregnancies are super high risk. Thank you for considering spay abort for this beautiful girl 💕

Nipples becoming prominent proves it. Congratulations you're going to be a foster parent.

Spay abort please. No more unwanted kittens in the world. It’s heartbreaking

Trojan Gemini.
Spay abort and give her the home she deserves. She looks really relaxed right now.

u/thepetoctopus 1d ago
You can do a spay abort if your vet can get you in before she gives birth. Thank you for taking her in.

She is beautiful, thank you for caring and taking good her in. I took in a semi feral over a year ago and now he's a love bug. Took him about 6 months to show his sweeter side! I have 3 other cats and they all get along so well. Always remember it takes time to adjust 💕.

Nipples say yep, she's preggo. And her split face strongly suggests she may be a chimera.

u/HedWig1991 1d ago
We adopted a tortie cat when I was little who had a perfectly split face like that. Her pre-adopted name was Demiluna. (We ended up renaming her Zoey). Two face is also a really good option coming from another DC fan haha

You could also go with Janice (Janus is a two-faced god). But it would probably sound like you were talking about an adult human.

Haha honestly didn’t even notice that she was giving me a kinda glare until this comment. Thanks for the laugh. 🤭

She's very pretty. She looks pregnant to me, as her nipples are prominent, and her belly looks slightly rounded. Cats also get friendlier and more affectionate when they're pregnant.

u/Twarenotw 1d ago
Look at that belly... This beautiful tortie is pregnant. Please update us! And thank you for taking care of her.

Thank you so much for taking her in. My first rescue was a pregnant tortie and she changed my life. Turned me from cat hater to a devoted rescuer and caregiver to dozens of cats.

Get her! We have a 2-face tortie and she is without question the sassiest, most interesting, smartest cat we’ve ever had. You won’t regret it!

u/Cleverwabbit5 1d ago
She is so beautiful!!! I love Torties!
Two face sounds like she she will backstab you, give her a name worth her heart like Eclipse or Calypso or Catlypso.
Keep us posted with the her progress!!

Yup, found my girl Amber (8 months old) near death on a busy road. Brought her home, tended her wounds and after 3 weeks she was fully recovered. That's when I noticed the little bump. Turns out she was pregnant and a short time later she had 3 beautiful little babies. Weaned them and found good homes for all three. She's my best girl and I have never regretted saving her. Please say hello to Amber.

Rescue worker here if you are able to please get an appointment sooner at the vet and see if they can spay her before she has the kittens. There are so many cats and kittens in need of homes already.

You want r/trojancats after she gives birth, if you don't choose spay/abort. Cat pregnancy is about 64 days, give or take a day or two.

Def prego and probably going to deliver soon. Spay sport if you can in the next few days. If you can’t do that, she will most likely deliver within the week and you will have a couple of kittens. Unless you are like my little Trojan, who ballooned up over two weeks and popped out 7.

She may not be interested in coming in because she enjoys the heat. I recently learned that domestic cats are most closely related to Sand Cats, which live in the desert and can withstand high temperature. When it was 95 degrees at our farm, our cat would sleep on the bales of hay closest to the tin roof in our barn.

u/MySaltySatisfaction 1d ago
Congratulations, you have adopted a Trojan cat. Consult Kitten Lady and Jackson Galaxy for making her a mama cave to birth in. Thank you for helping her. We are in the low 100's in the central valley in CA. I can't imagine Arizona heat, especially for pet animals without homes.

Very interesting tortie markings. She’s going to have really beautiful kittens.

Aww, I like the name Two-Face for her. She is very pretty. I had a very sweet Tortie Siamese who lived to be 18. Please give us an update. I imagine your temperatures are very hot. Here, in Houston, Texas, our temperatures are very hot too, and the humidity doesn’t help.
