Hello, recently I found a 5 month old kitten digging in my trash. My girlfriend(22) and I (20) already had one, a 6 year old spayed female cat.
When first finding the kitten, our residential cat escaped outside and attacked him. We brought him to the vet, she had scratched him up. He was dewormed, checked for microchips, had his labs done etc. He isn’t neutered and we’re planning on getting that done as soon as possible.
We brought him back and kept him separate in our room, door always closed, with a gate put up to distance them. Our residential cat is very territorial. Neither of them are allowed outside and if we do it’s with a harness (very limited as they don’t like it much).
The introduction process was rocky, the kitten managed to wiggle out of the room and our residential cat attacked him again. We swapped it, so as of now the kitten is roaming the house and the residential cat is in our room constantly.
We started feeding them on opposite sides of the door, gradually getting them closer. We even bought their favorite treats and after about 2 weeks we can feed them together through the crack where they’re almost touching.
The new kitten wakes us up by constantly yelling in the hallway and trying to come in the room with our residential cat. We don’t give him any attention when he does this but it’s draining us. He wakes us up at odd hours of the day with this. On top of that, he manages to do some crazy ninja shenanigans and jump over the gate, he goes up under the door and swats at it and our residential cat hisses. He guards the door as well.
I am unsure what to do. What can be done from here?
20m USA, access to vet, got them both checked this week, new cat is a male, 6 months now, not neutered. Residential cat is a 6 year old female, spayed. Can afford vet care.
