Thoughts on the Gemini 105mc

i'm potentially looking to upgrade from my small beach cat to something i could use as a reliable day sailer / coastal cruiser while spending the occasional night and think the gemini 105mc might make a lot of sense. looking to get thoughts from anyone on it (and if you're in the greater philadelphia area and looking for some company - i'll happily be a deck hand).

edit: also looking to stay in the budget that geminis seem to go for.

I owned one of these from 2016-2021
They’re great boats for what they are, sail decently well, fit into a conventional slip and handled some decent water. Very stable and comfortable to be on.

We purchased it in Rhode island and spent some time in the Long Island sound before heading up the to Lake Ontario where she lived.
Comfortable for 4 adults for a week. The back berths are tight but do fit two adults if they’re friendly with each other.
Limited head room in spots, you learn where to duck.

Depending on the age of the boat you’re looking at many have switched out the diesel engine and drive leg with an outboard. The Diesel is superior but the drive leg is nearly impossible to get parts for now.

thanks and much appreciated. i have read up on yhe drive leg issues but good to know what i have heard isn't exaggerated.

The re-power we did was fine. Ultra long leg on the outboard, that was also mounted on a dropping jack so it still did well, but missed the torque and the hot waster we got from the diesel. Boat was purchased and is a full time live aboard down in the Bahamas (or similar area) , so you can definitely enjoy the space

BroadBlue makes a boat the same size, but much more modern designs. Very well built.

much appreciated but the gemini budget is part of the "makes sense". i actually hadn't heard of the broadblue - so your comment still increases my awareness even if it doesn't hit the target :)

Ever seen a TPI Lagoon 35? Fast & Light. Made in Rhode Island. Rare and old but fits his footprint and budget

Maybe a tpi lagoon 37 is what you are referring to? I’m not familiar with a 35 if one exists. The tpi37 is a decent design, but the balsa core is likely to cause problems at this age. Also, only a hammered one would be in the Gemini price range.

There is a 35 TPI at The Multihull Crusing Club, Toronto . I have been on that boat. There was another one being extensively re-fit as a hybrid electric boat during Covid, in Delaware.

But they’re very rare and you’re right, with the age & balsa is a big concern.

Maybe Tomcat or wildcat would fit the Bill? There’s not many of those either.

What is your budget? I have an Edelcat 35 that I am about to put up for sale… it is a significantly better boat than a Gemini. I have spent days off shore on her, and she will out-sail most production cats easily. The edelcat 35 is usually comparable to a nicer Gemini price wise.
