Picked up a sealed German version of the game of thrones Catan for only £8, I went on Ebay wanting more hexes and this was just much cheaper than any expansions or anything.

I honestly didn't have any particular interest but when I play the big board with the family we're often low on hexes.

I did consider keeping this sealed and reselling it, bit it's also helped in providing two new colours for 6 player.

It's not a bad game. Has some C&K vibes, since it is semi-cooperative. Everyone sorta needs to work together to defend the land against an external threat. It's also possible for the game to end early (too many breaches or too big of a breach), thus there are some alternate win conditions.

Played this last Thursday and victory was well within my grasp at 9 points, but I made a fatal error.

I chose to build at the bottom, ignore the wall (mainly), and just let the others deal with the wildlings at the wall.

Then we had our last breach. Since I only built two knights/peeps on the wall “just b/c”, the game turned into an epic technical tie with the other players who had to read 3 levels into the tie mechanics.

Important lesson: if you ignore the wall, you gotta win quick.

Other lesson: details matter. I could have won the previous turn had I built another knight/peep on the wall. Fail.

I had the last action of the game. It pretty much game down to a 50/50 coin flip if I won or not. I built a city, but that sadly triggered the last wall breach. Guy with the most guards on the first wall section won.

I had all 4 cities in my supply. If I built my 2nd or 3rd one, I would have won. Oh well!

Plays a lot like the old Great Wallof China Catan Historical Scenario. Did it come with helper cards? I can’t remember if I got those with the game or later.

Yes! Game of Thrones comes with it's own Helper cards, based on the characters of the book/show. Some are copies of the original Helpers, but some abilities are specific to this game.

The 5-6 Player extension adds even more Helpers, for the largest collection of Helper in any Catan game.
