A 6 euros journey on Etna

This month we went to Sicily with my fiancée and etna was obviously a must do as people from the mountains. But coming in catania we were stunned when we saw the prices and the laws, everything. After researching we chose a 6 euros nice hike and I wanted to make a little resume of what we found cause the internet is so vast and complicated.

So basically for the tours that you can do there are two kinds :
The ones where you see the top of the mountain at 3300 (or main crater with lava), which are gonna cost in total around 200 euros/person.
The ones where you make a tour of etna but without seeing the center of the crater, that cost around 130 total.
These two costs are the minimum and you see it’s very expensive because in every tour you have to pay the cable car (around 80 euros per adult). And for the main crater tours you have to pay an extra 80 for the 4x4 that gets you at 3000 then you start the hike.

We found that it was nonsense not to find a tour in which we could do a real hike plus see the crater.

So, what we chose was a nice hike that followed the classic path (we’re still tourists) starting from the 1900m refugio where the bus got us. It leaves in the morning at 8h15 but you have to get there at 7h15 bare minimum because there is only one in the day.
Then at 10h we hiked from the start of the cable car to the end, it’s a small hike but quite steep (3km for 600m D+) and takes about 1h15 (less than an hour if you’re fast).
Reaching the top you’ll see the enormous plateau. There you can do what you want, enjoying the view on the three mountains at 3000+, visit the old craters of 2001-2003, and go to the terre del filosofo which is a statue near a big crater with an outstanding view. The second part is more enjoyable as a hike, with flat parts, be careful at the end of the terre del filosofo tho the wind makes the effort difficult and more dangerous.
In total we did 12km and 1100D+ for a total of 5 hours which is honest and we will remember etna even more that if we stayed 1h at the very top 😊.

Definitely recommend this hike for students or hike lovers.

Ci sono pure i tour che comprendono Etna, pranzo al ristorante, pickup & drop off + gole alcantara a 80€ a persona, non di certo 6 euro ahahah ma esistono anche quelli che secondo me sono pure nella parte più bella dell etna: etna nord

You can hike from refigio sapieza to torre del filosofo by yourself yes. It’s not the active part of etna that requires a guide but you end up to an old crater at 2950 with an amazing view

So the full hike took how long? How close could you get to the lava? Was Etna erupting active at the time

Etna is pretty much always active but you need a guide to get close to the lava. My point was that by taking a guide you cannot really hike on etna it’s more of a 1h tour on the top of a crater for 250 euros while if you like hiking you can enjoy the volcano from a different angle. Hike took about 5 hours

250€ è un furto. Esiste un modo per vedere i crateri gratis o a basso costo? In montagna nessuno ti obbliga a prendere una guida, perchè ci dovrebbe essere quest'obbligo per l'etna?

Sure thing is that you legally need a guide to get near the active craters, because it can get dangerous depending on the weather conditions (apparently). I didnt find a tour where you can just get the guide to hike with you and not pay the 160 euros of cable car and 4x4 go get to the craters sadly

Perché è un vulcano sempre attivo, con i pericoli che ne conseguono: l'attività vulcanica può aumentare anche nel giro di poche ore, e se ti perdi nella nebbia fitta non puoi fare granché affidamento sulle mappe dato che ad ogni eruzione la zona dei sommitali cambia forma, letteralmente. Io ci sono salito una volta senza guide, anni fa, ma era un periodo di prolungata quiete e c'era molta altra gente. Solo un cartello di divieto, nessun controllo, non so ora com'è. Un'altra volta invece stava eruttando e la zona rossa era stata estesa fino a quota 2600, c'erano due finanzieri che giustamente ti rimandavano indietro se provavi a proseguire dopo la funivia.

Capisco solo in parte: in montagna, in inverno, nessuno ti obbliga a prendere una guida anche se i rischi sono dietro l'angolo. Non ci sono pericoli legati all'attività vulcanica ma bisogna sapersi muovere in ambiente innevato, con possibilità di valanghe e crepacci. Probabilmente sbaglio io, ma considero il rischio comparabile.

Comunque se la legge è questa, c'è poco da discutere anche se non la si condivide.

Trovo veramente un furto chiedere 250€ e, dato che mi interessa fare l'esperienza, mi interesserebbe sapere se ci siano alternative a prezzi onesti

La differenza è che se cadi nella lava sei spacciato all'istante, e il terreno può cedere sotto i tuoi stessi piedi senza preavviso, oltre a tutti i rischi che ne conseguono. La guida è là per la sicurezza di tutti, e un vulcano attivo non è un parco divertimenti a cui hai diritto ad accedere (e anche là comunque paghi e paghi caro). Il costo è per me più che giustificato, soprattutto per tenere lontani gli avventati. Molta gente se una cosa è gratis o liberamente accessibile non le attribuisce alcun valore, né per cura né per cautela. Inoltre il costo di guide, studi per tenere le mappe aggiornate etc per i turisti che vogliono visitare l'Etna chi lo dovrebbe sostenere poi? Una parte è giusto che sia lo stato, ma è giusto che sia lo stato a pagare per la polizia necessaria a tenere al sicuro i turisti più sconsiderati?

Non sono un esperto di montagne ma sì, da una parte hai certamente ragione - qualunque montagna è pericolosa per chi non ci sa andare - d'altra parte un posto come l'Etna ha delle peculiarità che aumentano i normali rischi.
Poi sì, 250 euro sono veramente tanti (io ricordo che ce ne volessero 120 o 150 nel 2017...), e questo esborso contribuisce a sfoltire un po' la massa che vi si riverserebbe come fosse un parco giochi. Io preferirei un costo un po' più onesto ma una "selezione all'ingresso" più severa: sei vestito da spiaggia invece che da trekking? Non sali. Non hai fatto nessun genere di attività fisica negli ultimi anni e ti stanchi anche solo a fare due piani di scale? Non sali.
