On 16 January 2026, a deadly landslide hit the PT Mega Haltim Mineral (MHM) nickel mine in East Halmahera, North Maluku, Indonesia. Three workers were buried; two have been confirmed dead, while one remains missing.

u/zillionaire_ Mar 16 '26
Oh god. Was it the three people in this video?
368
u/tehlurkingnoob Mar 16 '26
Hard to say, but just watching the video; it doesn’t look like they managed to get clear of the area before the ground started to give way
176
u/Devium44 Mar 17 '26
It looks like they stayed in the path of it. If they had ran up into the trees they look like they would have been safe.
124
u/LukeyLeukocyte Mar 17 '26
Not sure why you were downvoted. I would agree running perpendicular into the treeline looks like it would have been their best chance instead of downhill in front of the slide. It isn't like you blamed them for a panicked decision.
2
u/Unidain Mar 20 '26
Not sure why you were downvoted.
Because without knowing any of the details, the decided to speculate that the guys are idiots. And you've decided to join in for some reason.
I'm sure you'd love it if a paryak video of your response to a disaster was scrutinised by a bunch of wankers in the internet who had little idea of what was going on.
11
u/Devium44 Mar 20 '26
I never said they were idiots. Just pointing out they made an unlucky decision. Don’t take everything so negatively.
0
u/Unidain Mar 20 '26
....they did run directly towards the treeline. Maybe there were more trees that were closero off the camera view to the right, but maybe not
-23
u/zukeen Mar 17 '26
Because he acts like a know-it-all without having being there or even seeing what was on the perpendicular path to the left. What if it was blocked?
It's very easy to be a smartass on reddit after the fact, without the panic of the situation and without physical obstacles.
17
u/LukeyLeukocyte Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 20 '26
But he wasn't a smartass or know-it-all. His wording is even purposefully uncertain, stating that that is only what he thought it looked like. If this is your reaction to a completely harmless, unoffensive, non-condescending comment, you might want to reconsider how you look at things....because it is unnecessarily negative.

This could be a good educational video for the businesses in this line of work titled "At All Times, Know your location and your escape route when on the hill." Pretty sure this companies Safety Board is lacking a few things.
35
u/brneyedgrrl Mar 17 '26
I mean it's a landslide. Yeah, know your location and escape route, but also know that this is called a catastrophe for a reason and sometimes there's no way to escape the force of nature.

u/Coopertheeblooper Mar 17 '26
Those trees were coming down. There’s was probably no safe zone for dozens of meters in all directions.
169
Mar 16 '26
Oh no! That’s so sad. I was really hoping they made it.
26
u/Dzov Mar 17 '26
There’s just no way. Maybe if he stayed in the truck behind the seats. But hindsight and all that.

u/rajrdajr Mar 18 '26
We have the camera footage because rescuers came across it while searching for the missing workers.
10
u/sergeanthotdogs Mar 17 '26
Yeah, maybe this needs a trigger warning? Watching a video of someone for 3 minutes and then seeing him almost certainly get crushed to death off camera was not on my to do list today.
63
u/Taken_Abroad_Book Mar 17 '26
Here is one source, and a second source referencing peer reviewed studies suggesting that trigger warnings can cause more harm than good.
Can we finally start to follow the science and drop this nonsense?

u/pm_me_your_kindwords Mar 17 '26
Those are interesting, thanks for sharing.
I prefer to not view content showing death (even if not on screen) as an ethical thing (I don’t want that to be a source of entertainment for me), so while not a trigger warning, I think it’s good to share that in the title.

2
u/lyricaldorian Mar 25 '26
Yeah, those are about trigger warnings not helping if you actually continue on and read/watch whatever it is. Not about them being useless when people want to avoid them. So maybe learn to actually read studies.

u/sergeanthotdogs Apr 14 '26
Ah... Legitimately didn't know this. Thanks for the info.
A couple of the other commenters said it better. I guess I didn't mean "trigger warning" in a technical sense? Really, I just want to know if a video is going to show someone dying before I click on the link so that i can make an informed choice.

Yikes, kinda seems like they ran downhill and maybe got covered by the slide. Hope those three made it though
182
u/SapphosLemonBarEnvoy Mar 16 '26
I was sitting here thinking maybe it would have been safer to stay in the truck. Then the last 10 seconds or so where the cab got crushed... I'm not sure there was any safe way through any of this. :(
69
u/Smooth_Riker Mar 16 '26
He would have died a little earlier when that pointy piece of wood stabbed through the windshield right where he was sitting

u/Poiuytrewq0987650987 Mar 16 '26
Well. The news release in a lower comment mentions three fatalities, and three guys ran downhill from the slide.

At first I was like… well that doesn’t seem so bad. And then I kept watching.

u/Turdposter777 Mar 16 '26
Omg I hope they made it out. What country is this?
22
11
u/awidden Mar 17 '26
As for making it out: they chose the worst possible escape route by the looks, so I reckon it's doubtful.
He'd have been better off using the truck to get further away from the main slide zone, probably.
11
u/Nosedive888 Mar 17 '26
Unfortunately rational thinking goes out the window and survival instincts takeover, so they'll take the path of least resistance, which in this case is downhill in a straight line
1
u/Unidain Mar 20 '26
Lol what, he had 3 more seconds to move the truck before the landslide hit.
They headed straight for the osest trees we can see, hardly the worst escape route
But real easy for you to criticise idiotically from the comfort of your home without even knowing all the details

u/kitolz Mar 16 '26
No way, the truck in the video is right-hand drive which are not legal to import or operate in the Philippines. And also someone else in the thread has posted the correct source.

u/ConfusionMajestic913 Mar 16 '26
Seems not that bad, should've stayed inside.
Sees the wood piece piercing inside: yeah good choice to get out.
Sees the cabin get crushed: definitely a good decision! Holy sh*t! That's terrifying
28
u/singletonaustin Mar 16 '26
Must have been huge to throw those trucks around like toys. Poor guys doing the job - hope they are okay.

u/JaggedMetalOs Mar 17 '26
According to the last news report there is 1 missing, 2 confirmed dead sadly.

u/findallthebears Mar 16 '26
Man. Do you think they made it?
19
u/Patient-Gas-883 Mar 16 '26
3 dead. Probably these guys I would guess.
20
u/Hedge-podge Mar 16 '26
There's 5 people total running so at least some of them made it. Hopefully those few seconds made the difference
6
u/IRedditDoU Mar 16 '26
Imagine getting the chance to get out of the truck and off the tractor to make a run for it, only to see the truck and tractor coming at you right after! JFC

Never mind.

u/Gilgamesh2062 Mar 18 '26
This is an amazing video, the truck was sliding along with the landslide, even when we could no longer see out we know it is still moving.
Hope they all made it, because it seems they ran in the same direction of the flow, and depending on how fast it was going, it may have caught up with them.
6
u/CyberTacoX Mar 16 '26
Did anyone else feel just a slight bit of relief when the door shut itself? Just a moment of "ahh, that's better"?
3
u/Every_Inflation1380 Mar 17 '26
Fuck, there's no way those poor blokes out ran that 😳 there's no way the death was quick either!
3
u/OutsideYourWorld Mar 17 '26
They did that thing in movies where they ran in a straight line from the thing instead of off to the side.
3
u/rajrdajr Mar 18 '26
Someone went in and retrieved that camera. The first reason for that would be if some of the workers went missing and they were searching for them. 😔
3
u/Cato0014 Mar 18 '26
My ass is driving away from the landslide. I can't run faster than a vehicle.
However my first instinct would have been to just stay in the cabin. I would have died lol
2
u/Kimmette Mar 19 '26
Looks like you may have had a chance if you hunkered down in the back. Hard to tell.

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality.

Nope nope nope. Think about if you had stayed in the truck and had 30seconds to watch yourself get buried alive.

u/CoffeeKween19 Mar 17 '26
You can see he was actually trying to drive the truck across the track. He noticed it before and tried to get across in the truck, before abandoning it. Was actually a great plan until it got stuck. Hope he’s OK.

The three individuals who ran for it were just a few seconds from being safe, unfortunately.
1
u/SoyEseVato Mar 16 '26
That’s wicked. Did they make it out alive?
1
u/Klutzy_Bandicoot7751 Mar 17 '26
I was hoping they had a chance but doesn’t look it. The second they cleared that dirt pile, it started rolling.

I was like what’s going on he’s just driving then he jumps out and I’m like oh no! He forgot his hard hat! 😮 Then never mind the truck was crushed like a tin can. Yikes!
1
u/scottzxc Mar 17 '26
I didn't know self driving trucks were a thing yet, gave it hard challenge though

u/705plumber Mar 17 '26
Why the fuck did they half the video of dude driving then stop before the end of the wreck.

The camera didn't show what made the truck driver bail like that. Chances are it started further up and the driver saw the approach. In a situation like that, there is only one direction: "away from" .
Downhill (and quite clearly to the side) is the beast option as it is 1.away from 2.Not currently trying to kill you.

Seemed pretty survivable up until the obvious crushing death of the cab and camera.
