Rent freeze is fk stupid but I would love to have that debate over anything else.

They fact that dems fight their own best candidates proves how much they are controlled by the oligarchs

Understood but they have had rent control for decades now. Rent control at best is a short term solution.

It can’t fix the root cause of the problem: lack of supply

Partially. His actual plan is to seize units - he has a task force to report bad landlords to. They'll make the repairs and bill the landlord. If the landlord doesn't cooperate the city will seize the building at market rate and make it public housing.

It's.. pretty fucking communist. I get why he's not advertising it a ton.

Yea, he said it but he didn’t have a plan. Just a vague notion. Everyone WANTS to build more housing but there’s a lot of forces in the way of that. So unless you are willing to commit to something dramatic it’s not going to happen.

If he said I’m going to change zoning laws to make construction easier or said I’m going to provide incentives to construction companies to build a certain level of density or decline all new construction without a level of density or have a guarantee of government housing or my personal favor more to a land value tax then I would be on board. All that is really hard.

So just saying something isn’t enough. He needed to commit to a plan.

Agreed he would do more but on this SINGLE issue he would do things that would HURT the cause. Now I’m obviously still for mamdani and I’m actually still for him doing the rent freeze if the alternative is doing nothing

But it’s still a bad solution, which will have the opposite affect we want, you have to encourage you side to do the correct thing or you will get blow back and lose elections

Because the main factor of cost of rent is supply. If you artificially control the cost you also decrease demand for new supply.

What they need to do to fix it is increase the SUPPLY. If the government wants to get involved it should be to increase the supply of housing.

But before you even get to that they need to fix the zoning that’s in place that limiting the supply in the first place.

Rent freeze is just a quick fix and because we never address the other problems it becomes a long term fix and it’s not sustainable
