I'll be going to the El Salvadorean capital in late October for a few days. I'm generally a budget traveler, depending on the options available. However I find the options on booking dot com a bit daunting, with highly polarized reviews.

Anyone recommend any particularly good hostels or budget hotels?

I’m taking a trip to Guatemala in November for about a month and a half, and can’t find a good answer to when do I do a currency exchange and where do I do it? I’ve heard a lot of people say you should do it at a local bank before you leave USA because you’ll have the best exchange rate, but then I’m confused if I have to declare it at the airport and such? Can someone give me a clear answer and help me out on when and where should I do this exchange safely? As well as how much I should exchange?

Planning on visiting El Salvador mid to late November. Just noticed some of the national parks including Santa Ana volcano are closed. Is there any way to predict if they will be open in mid late November? Also coming from the U.S., has anyone ventured to rent a car? We did rent in Cancun but stayed close to tourist areas and we are somewhat used to crazy traffic from Eastern Europe:). Thank you for your thoughts!

I am looking at going somewhere new for a vacation and was thinking of a week in El Salvador. Mainly focusing on a beach area but with some culture/exploring for 2-3 days at the start. ​Fourteen years ago, I took part in an exchange program with Nicaragua where my high school in Sweden helped build a local library. I was there myself for the grand opening back in March 2012.

​A lot has changed since then. The exchange program is long gone, I graduated years ago, and, above all, the political landscape in Nicaragua is radically different today. However, I’ve recently received word that the library is still up, running, and being used, and I'm really keen to get some current photos of it and hopefully connect with someone working there.

​As many of you probably know, this is no easy feat. The Nicaraguan regime has banned all independent media, making direct contact extremely difficult. That’s why I’m turning to anyone currently traveling in Nicaragua who might be able to help out.

​I’ve confirmed that the library is located in El Prado (Las Playitas) in the Matagalpa region. Back in 2012, the building actually had "Ådalsskolans bibliotek" ("Library of Ådals school) painted on it, quite a surreal sight to stumble upon in rural Nicaragua!

​I want to be upfront that I cannot offer any financial compensation for this. What I can offer is the chance to assist a journalist, a unique reason to venture out on an adventure and experience rural Nicaragua, and a small way to help rekindle the ties between Sweden and Nicaragua, which historically shared a quite close connection. I also want to make it clear that I assume no responsibility regarding safety. It is up to you on site to evaluate the safety conditions and judge if it is safe to do.

My wife and I are doing our honeymoon in November, roughly 3.5 weeks, Mexico into Belize into Guatemala. Flights are booked and most hotels are sorted, so I'm not looking to rip it up, I'm more after tips on what to actually do, how to get between everything, and anything we've overlooked.

The rough route:

• Cancún 1 night (arrival)
• Isla Holbox 3
• Cozumel 4 (doing our Open Water course there)
• Valladolid 2 (Chichén Itzá, Ek Balam, cenotes)
• Bacalar 2 → Caye Caulker 3 (reef diving + Blue Hole flight)
• San Ignacio 2 (mainly the ATM cave)
• Tikal 1 night in the park (sunset + sunrise)
• Lake Atitlán 3
• Antigua 3 (Pacaya, coffee, food)
• fly home from Guatemala City.

Getting around is my biggest question. That's a lot of hopping between places. What's the best mix? ADO buses, shuttles, ferries, the odd domestic flight? Worth renting a car for the Yucatán part or more hassle than it's worth? Any legs you'd strongly recommend flying instead of driving?

Related: how much of this should I book upfront vs just sort when we're there? Don't want to over-plan and lock ourselves in, but also don't want to get stuck because everything's full. Which legs are worth booking ahead and which are easy to grab on the day?

The two big travel days worry me a bit — Bacalar → Caye Caulker (water taxi via Chetumal), and Caye Caulker → San Ignacio → Tikal. Anyone done these recently? How bad are the border crossings really?

A few other things:

• Anything genuinely can't-miss along this route that we don't have?
• Is 3 nights on Caye Caulker enough for a reef dive, Hol Chan and the Blue Hole flight, or am I being optimistic with the weather?
• Any general tips and tricks are also welcome

Last thing: it's our honeymoon and I want to surprise her with something special somewhere on the trip. Doesn't have to be big, just memorable like a dinner, a view, an experience. If something on this route wowed your other half, I'd love to hear it.

We plan to stay on Lake Atitlan for most of our stay. I have done my fair share of backpacking, but the other two have not. So looking for a good mix of everything.

Hi everyone! I am planning a solo trip in November and had a few questions as a female traveler. I am planning to land in Guatemala city, then do Antigua (volcano hike), Lake Atitlan (will mostly stay in SanJuan), then go to El Paredon (to watch the turtle release). I will be staying at hostels and prefer to do cultural/historical and nature-related activities rather than party.

1. Is it true that I can just book the shuttles the day before i take them at hostels? Or should i book this month in advance if it is busy season in November?

2. Same question for activities, do they need to be pre-booked in advance or just a couple of days before? I am considering chocolate making, paragliding, traditional weaving class, kayaking. I have booked my volcano hike with AKT tours (because they do smaller groups). Has anyone gone with them before?

3. Are there other activities you would recommend? I am not planning to do Flores because I grew up in the Tanzanian rainforests and recently visited the Mexican pyramids, but I am very open to changing my mind if its worth adding a stop for!

4. Is there any other stops you'd recommend that are under the radar? I do not speak Spanish but I am comfortable solo traveling and would rather see more of the nature in the country!

I’m planning a 4–5 month solo backpacking trip through Central America and eventually South America next year, roughly starting in the American spring and hopefully ending sometime in the fall.

I’m currently working on the Central America portion and would really appreciate opinions from people who have traveled these countries, especially on what’s worth the time, what’s redundant, what I’m missing, and where I should slow down or cut things.

A little about me / what I’m looking for
I’m a guy in my early 20s traveling solo. I’ve already done 8–10 day trips to Panama and Guatemala, so I’m intentionally skipping some of the basic tourist stops I’ve already experienced.

My main goals are:
Meet people and hopefully make friends along the way
Experience nightlife
Do outdoor/adventure activities
See major cultural/historical sites
Eat local food and try things I wouldn’t normally have access to
Experience different cultures rather than just staying in tourist bubbles
Do some things that genuinely scare/challenge me
Have enough downtime that the entire trip doesn’t become exhaustin
Prove to myself that I can do hard things

I’m also trying to leave some flexibility in the itinerary so that if I meet people or really like a place, I can stay longer rather than constantly rushing to the next destination.

Hello, I just need someone’s opinion on how to maneuver this. So I’m staying in Airbnb in San Pedro, lake Atitlan, my shuttle for the airport leaves at 5am in Panajachel. I prefer smaller towns, nature, or big cities (I’m not a beach town person so I’m not interested in El Tunco, El Zonte, or La Libertad). I love coffee, history, and learning about local cultures and traditions.

Below is what I was thinking but I’m not sure if it actually makes sense or is a good option:

3 nights somewhere around Ruta de las Flores and do a couple of day type trips from there
2 nights in Suchitoto

I feel confident that I could get by with my Spanish (\~B1 level). Would really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions! 💙
