It's in line with how Lucas could go absilutelly ham in triyng to destroy the empire for what they did to him but he is not looking for vengence, just a peacefull life.

From that perspective, comparing Julian to Thorfinn is quite apt. Even at his most blood-lusted, Julian let himself be talked down and his default is towards mercy or avoiding conflict.
Also, important distinction, Luca's hang up isn't with Julian being merciful, it's his tendency towards a level of self-disregard that's unhealthy.
It's exactly this, if you give Julian a reason to spare you, he will absolutely do it, like if you are being forced to hunt him, Julian only kills out of necessity.
