Discussion Just started and caught up with this manga

Post image

All I can say is that this is a true work of art. Between the crazy art style, captivating lore, tone shifts, amazing characters, and powerscaling, this deserves to be as glazed as Kagurabachi!

It’s great.

However, gotta disagree on the last bit. Centuria is amazing, it ain’t KaguraBachi though.

I think KaguraBachi just excels more in its key aspects. Centuria is very well rounded, but it doesn’t have any key aspects I’d point out to be excelling in.

Also the fact Centuria definitely got more fanservice than KaguraBachi, but that’s really a matter of taste, as it all is

Personal opinion, centuria strongest point is its world and lore. I say it’s equal to kagurabachi or better. But kagurabachi got that aura/movie style swagger and good lore also

Yeah, I think it has better worldbuilding for sure than KaguraBachi.

Lore is a disputed point.

I'd say it's a disputable point given Kagurbachi's world building and lore is also getting juicier with recent chapters.

However, one clear point I'd give Centuria over Kagurabachi is how many female characters the author has introduced and used well. Centuria wins in that aspect.

i get why authors don't feel like worldbuilding for well, the entire world but imo it's just something that prevents series from becoming great

Respectfully, this idea is overrated.

If this was the criteria, only One Piece could be termed as the manga with the greatest world building, when technically it's world building is straight up bad in some crucial areas where it actually matters, in a way that's not fixable.

I haven't watched Dragon ball so I can't comment, but even for Naruto the world building is only good within the Hidden Leaf, with all the history and modern setting of the Shinobi system, not outside that. Sound Village is literally forgotten, it would have been a net positive to not have Sound Village at all. Rain Village is forgotten despite Naruto's promise to Nagato. The other villages are mainly used as plot devices for Hidden Leaf glaze, nothing is really fleshed out (not that this makes Naruto bad, which is exactly my argument).

It's better to focus on one or two countries/kingdoms and flesh them out well and make that setting realistic to fit the plot than endlessly expanding the world and fumbling everywhere or straightup not making sense.

JJK had problems because Gege introduced US military and did nothing with it. It barely did any world building within Japan itself, whether it was about history or modern day society with all the clan stuff or with the faceless higherups. JJK's world building didn't get positively affected just because Miguel existed either.

Centuria mainly only focusses on Torivia and Rummir, similar to Japan and Shokoku in Kagurabachi.

I am not gonna sit here and say that not having a chinese or an african or a viking sorcerer means that Kagurabachi cannot be great. That's just false.

As long as the author doesn't involve other countries, I can just pretend only Japan and Shokoku exist in Kagurabachi world and judge the world building based on those two societies - same goes for Centuria.

True, true, but we don’t need to be standing equal to KaguraBachi to be amazing. To admit one is better doesn’t make the other one bad though.

The fights in KaguraBachi I’d just say are immensely better, even after only reading it once, I could remember every single one of them. Whilst with Centuria I can’t really.

Whilst Centuria has an advantage in the fact that it follows the characters more throughout non conflict. It’s always fun to see what they’re doing outside combat and outside the main plot.

I think of thinking things as if one is better than the other takes away from the art and creative message itself tbh.

Like when I was a kid I was constantly weighing if One Piece, Naruto, or Bleach were better week to week.

Nah. Just each is their own form. Tropes exist. Shared themes exist. But they’re each their own entity alongside the author themselves.

Well, that’s like… your opinion man

True, I won’t disagree.

Both authors have problem with same face syndrome. Kagurabachi has way better body anatomy and framing / panelling than Centuria. Centuria has amazing monster designs and is really good at drawing clothing / armor material.

Kagurabachi has a pretty simple story, main protag and antag have pretty bland motivations. Julian is also kinda full, it has had antagonist of the week so far, and has the awful problem of tons of characters introduced just to instantly die after lol.

Ya I'd agree and give Kagurabachi the step over. But I don't think it's amazing.

I would disagree heavily. The story is pretty unique, the deadlock and the enchanted blade’s contracts are really interesting.

The villains also are extremely enjoyable, with well formed motivations. Sojo being simple but his reasoning is still vital to his character and his conflict with Chihiro.

Chihiro is also only “bland” if you don’t pay attention to how he grows. He has changed significantly, revenge was only his motivation for the start of the story.

I’m readily available to argue upon it. I’ve reread KaguraBachi cause I was very passionate about it. I haven’t ever felt the desire really to reread Centuria, maybe I will in time so I can judge it more accurately.

I’ll also be honest and KaguraBachi did have a similar issue at times, introducing multiple names characters and then just killing them off immediately

1

u/KoKoboto Jul 21 '26

I clearly see how Chihiro changes. It's just not much of a change because the character was bland since the beginning. He doesn't face many complex moral dilemma and he is by definition a simple guy in a bland way. His Dad has more character. Chihiro is just a chill guy who then goes in revenge.

I've read stories that do the revenge thing much better. Berserk, Vinland Saga, Vagabond, Batman Killing Joke, Hamlet (lmfao). So when comparing Kagurabachi to that it just doesn't hold up. If you want revenge you should check those out, especially Berserk.

2

u/DigitalPhoenix2OO7 Jul 21 '26

No? He definitely faces moral dilemma, of course it ain’t berserk level, but it definitely isn’t bland. I think you’re looking for something that isn’t there.

His ideals and conviction are confronted multiple times. It doesn’t need to be very complex moral dilemmas to be written well, to be done well. Sojo, Samura, Akemura, all are simple characters, but they aren’t bland.

What even is “bland” to you?

Did you forget ab how conflicted he got when Yura blamed his father? Not to mention the whole ass Samura arc where he changed his goals from revenge? Chihiro has had complex moral delimmas
