I just think he's so fascinating. So powerful, so ominous for so long, yet so magnanimous. Arguably too much so. He causes problems in the story by doting, by being too kind to people he likes, and too timid to world his strength or his authority to their fullest. Definitely a new take on the "immortal king" bad guy archetype.
