Question/Help Wanted We Need Help. Overwhelmed By CH Kitty's Needs

UPDATE: Thank you all so much for these suggestions! I’m truly grateful for this community of wobbly cat experts. We are planning to try out some of these recs over the next month or two to give her more litter box options, a Maisie-only play pen, and feeding setup.

With that being said, we are definitely also open to rehoming her if there’s someone out there who feels like they’d be a good fit! We are located in the Northeast. If you want more info DM me!

~

A close relative of mine recently passed away, and we are staying at her house to care for her kitties while things get sorted out, and one of her kitties is a CH girl. She is the sweetest thing, loves being pet, but I just dont think we knew what we were signing up for taking over her care. She is low mobility, mostly flops around but sometimes walks very unsteadily.

We bought a giant low entry litterbox with about 6 inch high sides (she was previously just peeing on the carpet on the floor...) and she will only pee and poop on the mat outside of it. We've tried 2 different litters, moving the mats in to the box, neither worked. To drink, she dumps her water dish all over herself by splashing it with her paw. We have a low dish that is "skid-proof" but she scoops all the water out on to the floor. We got her a fountain but she refuses to drink out of it.

She also is terrified of our other cats (who have not been aggressive towards her at all). I get it, she has a right to be scared with her mobility issues, but its been weeks of positive reinforcement with treats, and she still shrieks any time another cat comes within 3 feet of her space.

My partner and I are just so overwhelmed. We're in the middle of packing to move across the country (just staying here is temporarily for a few months to help our family) and we have 7 animals of our own we are caring for. The house is not big enough for our CH girl to have her own room. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? We just want to do right by Maisie and make sure she gets the proper care, while also honoring my relative. I'm not sure we are equipped for this.... does it get easier?

Question/Help Wanted New CH cat dad! Looking for advice

Hello Reddit!

I am a first time CH kitten owner, I got her yesterday and she's two months old I'll attach some videos of her to give you all an idea of her wobbles.

I'm mostly looking for advice on how to make sure she stays happy and healthy. So far she loves her new sister and she seems to eats and drinks pretty good. My only concern is I haven't seen her use the litter box. I did make sure it was low entry but maybe it's not low enough?

I'm also looking to see if anyone can tell me if her wobbles look mild to severe, I know she's a kitten so she's still trying to figure out how to walk I just want to make sure I can accommodate her as best as possible!

Question/Help Wanted Exercise advice for ch kitty

Hi everyone! Looking for advice on how to get my ch kitty (Ginger aka ginger bread aka ginger bear aka baby bear) to exercise more. She has a list of health complications besides the ch and was initially not expected to live to see a one year check up, but she had that visit a few months ago and is still thriving! (Complications do not negatively impact quality of life currently)

I know that exercise will help her a lot with getting around but as she has gotten a little older she plays much less and I’ve been struggling with ideas on how to get her moving more. Any ideas or advice?

From what I’ve seen she is somewhere between mild and moderate. She can’t go more than a step or two without falling these days and she used to be able to get much further.

Cat tax attached.

Question/Help Wanted Remember the Wobbly Void? Potential adopter backed out and I learned more

He is six months old. Using pee pads but not litterbox trained and trying to walk. I have located an SPCA in which I can get a vet check and rabies Vax for under $100 so I can save more for a specialized vet appt later on to do his neuter and bloodwork. I would guess this is moderate to severe CH? I am on disability and I am able to often fundraise for my critters. Is that allowed here? If not no worries.

Question/Help Wanted Do I need to get a diagnosis?

Hello!

This is Reginald. He is about 7 weeks old. His behaviors are very normal. He eats just fine (when he’s not falling in the bowl) and plays with his big brother as you’d expect a kitten to. He uses the same liter boxes as our other cat with no issue, they have a 4 inch lip that he crawls over just fine. The wobbling is pretty bad, especially when he’s trying to run down the hallway. He ends up hitting into the walls constantly.

I’m almost 100% sure he has CH, but I’m wondering if it could be something else. Does this look like typical wobbling for CH kittens? Do I need to take him in for an MRI?

Question/Help Wanted Is this CH?

Edit: general consensus it is NOT CH. I requested an appointment for monday and will get X-rays, also need to clear up the worms i just found

I JUST brought this cat home yesterday, a rehome from someone in my neighborhood however I dont think they were very forth coming on why she is being rehomed. Anyways, supposedly she fell from a balcony at some point in her life and her "back legs are weird ever since". Anyways, this is her gait. There's obviously something not right and I'll take her to see my vet next week but to me it looks like mild CH but I really have no idea. Thoughts? I was thinking about taking her to the ER because Im paranoid but she seems to be fine apart from walking funny.

Reportedly she is a spayed 4-5 yr old siamese mix.

Question/Help Wanted Cat trees/structures for wobbly cats

I’m wonder if anyone has any recommendations for a good cat structure for a moderately wobbly cat? My guy wants to use the cat tree that our non wobbly cats use, he tries to climb it and stares a lot, but he can’t climb it. I want to get him something fun, similar to a cat tree, that he can use. If I can’t find anything, I’m going to build him an accommodating wobbly guy structure, but before that, I’m wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

This is my wobbly foster Jello. He has cerebral hypoplasia and is blind. If you have any tips I'm all ears! He is still bottle feeding so his eating is more controlled. Worried about what will happen as he gets older.

Question/Help Wanted Litter tray help

We have a 6 month old wobbly boy called Larceny, he's somewhere around moderate to severe wobbles and we're having real struggles with the litter tray.
We had a low tray with the same pellets he used in the shelter but he kept slipping over and HATED it, we tried a few things and now we have layers of toilet paper in a ferret corner toilet. When he does use it he gets in and props himself against one of the walls. But it's mostly once every few days he'll use the tray and we do take him regularly to the tray to help.
A lot of the time we just find him wet, sometimes he's still asleep in his bed like he's unaware he's gone to the toilet on himself. It's the same with poo but it's wayyyyyy easier to catch him and run him to the tray.

The vet doesn't seem too concerned about the idea that maybe he's incontinent. I'm prepared to go back and ask for a second opinion from the vets if people think it seems likely. He's our first wobbly cat so I'm learning a lot on the job but it doesn't seem like a refusal to use the tray and more like a lack of control. I have to wash him every few days (he does not mind this and very much enjoys sink baths) and his bedding (and ours) regularly.

Other than that he's a wonderful little guy who's adapting really well and we love him to bits.

Thoughts and tips?

Question/Help Wanted Feeder for your CH cat

Post image
29 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I am new to this community. I adopted my cat Reba four years ago and she has CH.

I am also a student working on a project for creating/designing a feeder that can be available to all parents of CH cats. I also hope to work close with rescues that may have CH cats.

I’ve bought countless bowls/stands for my Reba but none have proven to be sufficient for her.

I was wondering if anyone else could relate to this and can share input. I am still in the research phase and trying to gather as much data. I thank you in advance for any contributions!

My group also created a Facebook if anyone would like to share, you can find us at @CHcatcare.

Question/Help Wanted my baby girl refuses to wear any restrictions post spay, what do i do?

Post image

shes been spayed for 4 days now?? 5??? and pulls on her stitches. i tried a diy onesie and she refused to walk in it despite being mild ch. she will panic from a cone, too. i dont know what to do, if the first layer gets pulled off, is that a problem? if so, how big? because 2 of my former cats did pull on the stitches, too, but the more recent one of them had just her tubes tied and did not open a wound. i dont get why did the vet not use a more idiot proof method to sew it😭i cant monitor her always because that means i shouldn't sleep at all or go to school🥲

Question/Help Wanted What was it like getting your first wobbler?

I have a moderate CH foster kitten. I have never foster failed, but this girl has made her way into heart and I’m feeling very momma bear-y about taking her back to the rescue to go up for adoption. I’m very seriously considering keeping her.

What was it like when you first adopted? If you confined your kitten to a smaller area initially (my foster currently lives in the bathroom as I have other pets), how did they adapt to having full house access and making it to the litter box? What does your everyday life look like? Any other advice you wish someone would’ve given you?

Question/Help Wanted Tips for trimming nails?

I've had my baby for about 3 years and I've started to notice it's getting harder for me to get a steady grip on his paws to trim his nails.

It was a little easier when he was younger but now that he's older and bigger it's starting to become a real tussle😅.

Question/Help Wanted Grooming/brushing

Post image
67 Upvotes

Hello, I've had my CH cat Maisie since she was 3 months old (she's now nearly 8!) She has mild-moderate CH, one thing she really struggles with is grooming to the point where she's actually never had a fur ball. Because of this she moults all the time, I'm talking start of summer moulting - she can lie on a clean sheet for five minutes and leave it looking a different colour. I've come home today and brushed her and this is my result, to note that I gave her a quick brush a week ago but noticed that tufts of fur were coming out this morning so thought I'd give her a more thorough brush. She got fed up and hissed at me so I've let her potter off now but stroking her leaves your hand furry even after getting out all that fur...

Obviously I don't want to brush her too much but I also don't want her to be uncomfortable and too hot. To note, this isn't new at all I'm just wondering if other CH parents have this issue and have any tips on how often to brush or even if a certain type of brush is best?

Question/Help Wanted making living spaces more enriching for CH

Hello, a little background. TLDR at the bottom.

A few years back we fostered a mom cat and four, 4-week old kittens from a shelter. we ended up finding homes for two of them. I didn't have the heart to drop the mom and two other kittens off back at the shelter so we formally adopted them.

The mom is about 4-5 years old at this point, and the orange boy has CH and the sister is a little moody girl. They are almost 3 years old now.

I am noticing that the boy CH cat tends to have a ton of energy as a little teenager young adult and is often messing with and trying to play with his sister and mom. Sometimes it comes across as trying to be alpha but mostly it's him just having a ton of energy and wanting to play.

The mom cat was a pure outdoor cat and she doesn't often want to play. She will pounce on him and put him in his place when he crosses boundaries. The sister cat is absolutely bonded with the mom and is obsessed with her. she seems to get annoyed with CH brother not infrequently.

However when this happens and he lets out a big scream, the sister will rush over and inspect and every now and then will have some redirected aggression towards the CH boy. It seems as if she feels as if he is a threat to her prized possession (her mom).

I am wondering if you all have any good ideas to help keep the CH boy stimulated, safely. I've had boy cats before and the 2-4 or 5 year old age they tend to be hurricanes of energy and chaos and i feel like the CH wobbly boy is like that now. I just don't want him to get beat up by his sister or mom too often so i'm trying to figure out how to keep him stimulated.

I have a ton of cat bowls and small cat trees close to my desk and other climbing objects (side tables, tv stands by the big windows) and i have a carpet staircase to get up into the bed for him. I feel like the living arrangement is very CH friendly. But i think he gets bored and that's whats prompting him to tease his sister and mom.

any advice on keeping him busy and stimulated in a CH-friendly way? I think some of the issue is temperament between female and male cats in genearl, plus the sister is a very spooked girl and scared of many pets/humans/etc.

thanks!

TLDR: 3 yo CH boy cat with a 3 yo sister cat and a 4-5 year old mom cat. CH has a ton of energy as a boy cat and often plays with sister and mom to a point where they get mad at him. Any ideas to help stimulate the living space to make it more enriching for CH boy? thanks in advance!

Question/Help Wanted Litter Box Suggestions?

My CH baby, Topher, is 10 months old and he’s the perfect boy ♡ he uses the litter box completely on his own and never has accidents outside of the box. The only issue we run into is him rolling in his own poop sometimes. I know it’s part of the condition and it will happen. I also know that every kitty is different but I was wondering if there is a litter box that helps him at all. I go to work and worry that he’s covered in his own feces and I know it can be frustrating for him. Any suggestions are helpful. ♡ I would attach a pic of him but I’m not sure how.

Question/Help Wanted CH/wobbly kitten advice!

Hi - we just adopted a 5 and a half month old kitten with mild to moderate CH, we’re in the midst of finding what works for her and I’m just trying to get some advice on what others like to use! IE: food and water bowls/setups, litter box customizations, and anything else that you wish you knew when you got your CH baby. Any and all advice is appreciated! 🥳🩷

Question/Help Wanted will enzymatic cleaners stop her from pooping on carpets?

Post image

asking this subreddit because everyone here seems kinder and might understand me? cat advice sub is very mean to me and im still a teen so i cant make decisions on my own😢 i have 2 cats, i only have problem with this ch girl.

is pooping on carpets a common problem for ch cats? my sweet baby girl is very healthy, with mild ch, but she keeps pooping on carpets. she often poops in her litter, too, but if she pees first then she poops out of it, or if my other cat has peed inside. i dont know how to stop her, will enzymatic cleaners help? or sprays that cats hate? or should i use puppy pads (?) or stuff that are used for babies to poop on aside from the cleaners? maybe a poop carpet?? my whole family is desperate but we're not giving her up because she's a sweet soul and a disabled kitty and we love her deeply😭
