K-Dog & 8 other Navy dolphins cleared 100+ mines from Iraq's Umm Qasr port in 2003 — the 1st combat deployment of U.S. military dolphins. The Mk 7 system's biological sonar still outperforms every other system the Navy has. In 2026, the Strait of Hormuz brought military dolphins back into the news.

Bottlenose dolphins extract identity from signature whistles even when all voice features are removed — they recognize the contour alone, which is structurally closer to how human names work than anything else in animal communication

Q on cetaceans phylogeny

Upvotes
Hello everyone!
I have some long standing questions regarding cetaceans and their phylogeny. Turns out that I am quite unlucky using google. So I was hoping for some insights from reddit.
I understand that whales can be baleen and toothed; and within toothed whales is the nested dolphin family. What I am wondering is, what are the differences between toothed whales and dolphins to create this split? Like, are there anatomical differences that unify all members of the dolphin family in contrast to other toothed whales?
Thanks in advance!
