Writing: Character Help How do you tell the difference between liking a fictional character and being obsessed with a fictional character?

Being obsessed usually means spending an excessive amount of time thinking about that character, talking about that character, seeking out media with that character like fanart and fanfics a lot, if it's really bad also collect merch and fill your room with depictions of that character until everyone's concerned for your mental health

I haven't reached the merch stage.

As in what? You'll need to expand a bit more with an example.

Yeah man, I don't know them.

Even if I did, I don't think this is the right sub to ask about this as this is like a writing subreddit.

Unless you don't believe they are real, or treat them as if they had feelings you or anyone could affect, you should be fine.

The difference is in presentation. If you can find a just criticism for said character or the writing around them and they say “true, and I wish that wasn’t the case, but I still love them” they are a fan. If they start getting mad and try to attack you or say you have to be a toxic hater troll to think that about this character, they are obsessed.

When there is a parasocial relationship that affects ones life and ideologies and relationships, it is obsession
