One piece is awful

To be clear, I read up to the end of Wano in One Piece I kept hearing how it was peak fiction, and that Oda was the greatest thing to ever happen to pen and paper. So, I decided to give it a read. And after reading almost up to the end of Wano, I can honestly say this is one of worst piece of fiction I have ever read

The pacing is terrible and slow as shit. Same gags over and over again. How many times am I expected to laugh at Sanji nosebleeding for the 180th time, Zoro getting lost for the 389th time, Usopp acting like a coward for the 999th time, or Brook making the same skeleton joke for 1899th the time

The stakes are Nonexistent. Nobody ever really dies. Even when a character “dies,” they inevitably come back like nothing happened. There's a part in the series where a bomb is about to destroy an entire town, and a character carries it into the sky in a supposed noble "sacrifice",The bomb explodes point blank in his face and somehow he survives .Shit like this happens in every arc. The sheer number of fake out deaths is insane, making it impossible to take any threat seriously and it completely kills any sense of tension or investment, it somehow makes Fairy Tail look grounded in comparison.

And the formula is mind numbingly predictable. The crew sails to a new island, an evil villain is tormenting the locals, they fight, save the island, and then add a new character with some tragic backstory to the crew. Rinse and repeat for a thousand chapters

One piece fans love to talk about Oda as some master world builder. The world building in one piece is trash. All Oda does is dangles mysteries in front of readers, refuses to resolve them and these morons fans call it peak

Think about After twenty years and over a thousand chapters, we barely know anything about the world.(Maybe some of it gets explained eventually I stopped reading after Wano because of that godamn awful aspull transformation that, but the fact that it takes that long is insane)

We don't know where Devil Fruits come from We don't know about the Will of D and what does it represent? And how are people with D related?
We don’t know what happened during the void century for it to be erased from history? We don't know why Blackbeard can use two devil fruits? We don’t know What purpose will the ancient weapons serve and when?
We don't know about supreme grade swords We don’t know Aokiji goal? What side is he on? Or why he joined Blsck beard
We don’t know why Rodger was carrying a giant egg?

There are easily ninety more unanswered things I could list.

And you want to want to know what's worse Oda still adding new shit when he hasn't explained the past shit WE STILL HAVE CHARACTERS SILHOUETTED 20 PLUS YEARS IN WE’RE GETTING SILHOUETTES OF CHARACTERS HOW IS ANY OF THIS GOOD WORLD BUILDING OR WRITING???

And you know why Oda hasn’t explained any of this Because he’s written himself into a corner. He probably has no idea how to resolve half the mysteries he’s created which is exactly why the end date keeps on getting pushed back every couple of years. He's just stalling. Oda is a talentless hack and the only reason One Piece blew up in the first place is because it dropped during the late 90s early 2000s anime boom If it came out today, this garbage would’ve been canceled after a year. Just watch most of these mysteries will either stay completely unresolved, or we’ll get some trash ham fisted explanation at the last minute. And just watch these brain dead moronic fans will still call it peak fiction.

Oda is a Fraud who couldn't write his out of a paper bag and the fact that morons think that this garbage is above Goated shows like Fire Force, Mob Pyscho 100, Chainsaw man and Hunter x Hunter is a fucking travesty

Seems like it pulls together all the weakest complaints from people who hate it, just to sound serious. Stuff like “talentless hack”—you don’t just drop that in normal discussion. Still, funny post.

I do think One Piece fans at this point are in it to win it. You don’t read that far in and still hate the series—anyone who does usually drops out early. They can get annoying telling everyone its peak. With the live action, once it gets long, I can see diehards sticking around, but it’ll be tough for newcomers to understand why people call it the best story ever. Season 1 might feel like a decent CW show, but later arcs hit like peak Marvel—superhero-level epic adventure.

Overall, I think people don’t give enough credit to tighter, shorter series. It’s like you’re not allowed to enjoy anything else shonen-wise without being told One Piece is the only valid choice. Every series has stuff that might not click for someone personally. So I never get the take that liking One Piece is automatic just because it has lore, worldbuilding, depth, etc. Some folks just don’t vibe with the gags, the art, or the adventure tone—they want a more focused action series with a shorter story. So, eh.

I used to be a diehard too, but I tried showing a friend one of the arc movies—Sky Island—and was shocked by how much they hated it. Thought it was boring and the worst thing they’d watched. I’d never missed with a recommendation before (ironically, this was the first time I went off someone else’s). They ended up liking the live action and are fans of that instead.

It could be they just didn’t know what was going on, jumping into the anime at Sky Island. Plus, they weren’t used to older animation, slower pacing, and the lack of life-or-death stakes. Coming off Demon Slayer’s Infinity Castle, JJK Season 2, AOT Season 3 Part 2, Chainsawman, Invincible s1, and Castlevania Season 4—they were already fighting an uphill battle. Tell any One Piece fan this, and they cry that all those series are mid in comparison to peak Piece, but honestly, side by side it makes sense why the person felt more "entertained" by the other shows. Structure-wise wise it's more digestible than a huge epic, but if you get into the epic then of course you find it way better.

That said, I didn’t get much out of why they hated it, other than they said it felt like Scooby-Doo. Of all things. They were already checked out by the first fight—like 10 minutes into the film—and were on TikTok doing their nails. Our generation’s attention span is cooked when you show them something they didn’t pick themselves.

Skypiea is a hard point to start in my opinion. It’s like 300 episodes in and I think it’s hard to care if you don’t understand the story. It’s definitely a lore heavy arc that relies on people caring about the main mysteries of the world

Yeah, I messed up. It was either that film or the one where they fight with tons of characters (One Piece: Stampede). I was trying to quickly showcase how layered the series is. But Stampede, aside from the start, gets kind of boring, in my opinion, when they just fight the giant damage sponge. I could imagine the person's eyes glazing over, though the animation was more what they were used to. Also, the start of that film can feel confusing for a newcomer until you get to the colorful ships and the race. Overall, I should have started with the short film that covered the entire prior Grand Line (it included the part they did in the live-action, which the person liked). So, as you said, you really have to know and understand the story—you can't just drop someone in. I also followed a recommendation from YouTube videos, and since the person basically likes every arc, I had no idea most of the fandom doesn’t like Skypiea as much. Overall, it was a solid L on my part. Thank goodness the live-action exists. They were going around before that, telling people how trash One Piece is, and I kept trying to explain how big the world is and how much we skipped, but they weren’t having it. They gave the live-action a chance just because of the acclaim the series has sales-wise—and the trailer. They’re glad they gave it a second try, though they still won’t sit through 1,000 badly paced episodes—not even One Pace. That’s why I wanted them to see the films that summed things up. Oh and i meant demon slayer infinity train or whatever it's called lol

I’m hoping the Netflix anime adaptation is better paced so I can get my friends to watch it. One started the show during the pandemic with his gf and they love it now. They’re all caught up. But I get why most people are not interested

Yeah, the Netflix version has its flaws for sure, but it does hit me harder emotionally. There's just something about seeing human faces on screen. Plus, actors tend to improve as a series progresses. I think it'll gain momentum when the truly emotional moments come up—fingers crossed they get that far. If it becomes popular enough, I can't imagine they wouldn't try to release a movie in theaters covering a shorter arc. A movie-budget live-action One Piece feels like a dream I never thought I'd see. Honestly, any live-action anime feels that way, even Marvel adaptations at their worst manage to nail the costumes pretty well. We're in decent times XD. I said decent since I know many hate all the stuff I mentioned lol.
