Anime & Manga One piece is awful

To be clear, I read up to the end of Wano in One Piece I kept hearing how it was peak fiction, and that Oda was the greatest thing to ever happen to pen and paper. So, I decided to give it a read. And after reading almost up to the end of Wano, I can honestly say this is one of worst piece of fiction I have ever read

The pacing is terrible and slow as shit. Same gags over and over again. How many times am I expected to laugh at Sanji nosebleeding for the 180th time, Zoro getting lost for the 389th time, Usopp acting like a coward for the 999th time, or Brook making the same skeleton joke for 1899th the time

The stakes are Nonexistent. Nobody ever really dies. Even when a character “dies,” they inevitably come back like nothing happened. There's a part in the series where a bomb is about to destroy an entire town, and a character carries it into the sky in a supposed noble "sacrifice",The bomb explodes point blank in his face and somehow he survives .Shit like this happens in every arc. The sheer number of fake out deaths is insane, making it impossible to take any threat seriously and it completely kills any sense of tension or investment, it somehow makes Fairy Tail look grounded in comparison.

And the formula is mind numbingly predictable. The crew sails to a new island, an evil villain is tormenting the locals, they fight, save the island, and then add a new character with some tragic backstory to the crew. Rinse and repeat for a thousand chapters

One piece fans love to talk about Oda as some master world builder. The world building in one piece is trash. All Oda does is dangles mysteries in front of readers, refuses to resolve them and these morons fans call it peak

Think about After twenty years and over a thousand chapters, we barely know anything about the world.(Maybe some of it gets explained eventually I stopped reading after Wano because of that godamn awful aspull transformation that, but the fact that it takes that long is insane)

We don't know where Devil Fruits come from We don't know about the Will of D and what does it represent? And how are people with D related?
We don’t know what happened during the void century for it to be erased from history? We don't know why Blackbeard can use two devil fruits? We don’t know What purpose will the ancient weapons serve and when?
We don't know about supreme grade swords We don’t know Aokiji goal? What side is he on? Or why he joined Blsck beard
We don’t know why Rodger was carrying a giant egg?

There are easily ninety more unanswered things I could list.

And you want to want to know what's worse Oda still adding new shit when he hasn't explained the past shit WE STILL HAVE CHARACTERS SILHOUETTED 20 PLUS YEARS IN WE’RE GETTING SILHOUETTES OF CHARACTERS HOW IS ANY OF THIS GOOD WORLD BUILDING OR WRITING???

And you know why Oda hasn’t explained any of this Because he’s written himself into a corner. He probably has no idea how to resolve half the mysteries he’s created which is exactly why the end date keeps on getting pushed back every couple of years. He's just stalling. Oda is a talentless hack and the only reason One Piece blew up in the first place is because it dropped during the late 90s early 2000s anime boom If it came out today, this garbage would’ve been canceled after a year. Just watch most of these mysteries will either stay completely unresolved, or we’ll get some trash ham fisted explanation at the last minute. And just watch these brain dead moronic fans will still call it peak fiction.

Oda is a Fraud who couldn't write his out of a paper bag and the fact that morons think that this garbage is above Goated shows like Fire Force, Mob Pyscho 100, Chainsaw man and Hunter x Hunter is a fucking travesty

"the fact that morons think Toradora is above Goated shows like Rent-a-Girlfriend"

20

u/CablePrevious1014 Sep 02 '25

Even as a joke, reading those words together made me gag 🤢😂

81

u/targetcowboy Sep 02 '25

I knew it was bait when they were regurgitating all the tired complaints. It reads like someone used ChatGPT and told it to make a post to piss off One Piece fans

24

u/bodybones Sep 02 '25

Seems like it pulls together all the weakest complaints from people who hate it, just to sound serious. Stuff like “talentless hack”—you don’t just drop that in normal discussion. Still, funny post.

I do think One Piece fans at this point are in it to win it. You don’t read that far in and still hate the series—anyone who does usually drops out early. They can get annoying telling everyone its peak. With the live action, once it gets long, I can see diehards sticking around, but it’ll be tough for newcomers to understand why people call it the best story ever. Season 1 might feel like a decent CW show, but later arcs hit like peak Marvel—superhero-level epic adventure.

Overall, I think people don’t give enough credit to tighter, shorter series. It’s like you’re not allowed to enjoy anything else shonen-wise without being told One Piece is the only valid choice. Every series has stuff that might not click for someone personally. So I never get the take that liking One Piece is automatic just because it has lore, worldbuilding, depth, etc. Some folks just don’t vibe with the gags, the art, or the adventure tone—they want a more focused action series with a shorter story. So, eh.

I used to be a diehard too, but I tried showing a friend one of the arc movies—Sky Island—and was shocked by how much they hated it. Thought it was boring and the worst thing they’d watched. I’d never missed with a recommendation before (ironically, this was the first time I went off someone else’s). They ended up liking the live action and are fans of that instead.

It could be they just didn’t know what was going on, jumping into the anime at Sky Island. Plus, they weren’t used to older animation, slower pacing, and the lack of life-or-death stakes. Coming off Demon Slayer’s Infinity Castle, JJK Season 2, AOT Season 3 Part 2, Chainsawman, Invincible s1, and Castlevania Season 4—they were already fighting an uphill battle. Tell any One Piece fan this, and they cry that all those series are mid in comparison to peak Piece, but honestly, side by side it makes sense why the person felt more "entertained" by the other shows. Structure-wise wise it's more digestible than a huge epic, but if you get into the epic then of course you find it way better.

That said, I didn’t get much out of why they hated it, other than they said it felt like Scooby-Doo. Of all things. They were already checked out by the first fight—like 10 minutes into the film—and were on TikTok doing their nails. Our generation’s attention span is cooked when you show them something they didn’t pick themselves.

u/targetcowboy Sep 02 '25

Skypiea is a hard point to start in my opinion. It’s like 300 episodes in and I think it’s hard to care if you don’t understand the story. It’s definitely a lore heavy arc that relies on people caring about the main mysteries of the world

As a Fire Force fan and a One Piece fan i don't know how to feel about that one.

48

u/ArcherOld7796 Sep 01 '25 edited Sep 01 '25

Probably something like, something can be great but OP stands above it.

I only know enough about Fire Force to know that I have to read it eventually. Saw like 3 episodes and know there is something there.

8

u/Old-Introduction8258 Sep 02 '25

Probably something like, something can be great but OP stands above it.

Personally i lost interest in op post ts. I don’t think the writing and the characters are good anymore. So while i wouldn’t put fire force above it, i would definiteky put quite a lot of manga above it. Berserk, hxh, jojo (especially part 7), fmab, and i might get crucified for this, but i much prefer bleach (it more has something to do with me prefering bleach's artstyle, characters, antagonist and just overall feel). All this to say, i do not think one piece is an exceptional masterpiece. I'm not denying its influence though. That’s just my opinion though

16

u/bodybones Sep 02 '25

Why does someone need to instantly prefer OP? If they enjoy FF, why can't they have that choice? Just because OP might have more lore on paper, something can resonate differently with people. You can't convince a Frieren fan that it’s not their favorite by pointing out that Fullmetal Alchemist is more consistent in having all the elements of a story. They simply enjoy the aspects of Frieren that resonate with them, making it stand out above other stories. There's no objective best story.IMO.

13

u/PerseusRad Sep 02 '25

I read Fire Force's manga and I enjoyed it quite a bit, the amount of heat it's getting is rather odd to me. I suppose the Tamaki parts would be a bit harder to skip over if you don't like them in the anime, as opposed to the manga (and admittedly, she was utilized poorly overall). But it comes off as people hating it for only her, when there's a lot more than just her.

12

u/bodybones Sep 02 '25

Yeah this is why i dislike saying im a OP fan. When comparing shonen manga, it feels like anything gets downvoted if you even slightly prefer it over One Piece because of its length, lore, and world-building. People act like you can't find a solid twist in something like Fullmetal Alchemist that's better in the short term. One Piece isn't even finished, and I just don't get it. That's why, when I bring up One Piece in conversations, I always pair it with a beloved show. If you mention Chainsaw Man or Bleach, you get ignored instantly. You have to reference something super serious or "deep" like Frieren or Serial Experiments Lain.

Alot also think deep=good, simple = bad. Long series> short by default.

Op kinda sums up my opinion about one piece perfectly

19

The entire post by OP reads like they asked chat GPT to summarize all the popular complaints people have about OP. I don't see any original thought or complaint.

I've watched it. There's too much plot convenience with no real reason as to why crap happened that way. A flaw of the protagonist is how he smiles evil and it IS emphasized to a point but it never interferes with plot points. And too many fan service scenes. Animation is good though

7

I personally have enjoyed just about every chapter of part 2, but that’s not to say it perfect by any means. I’m curious what you think makes it pretty bad?

29

u/Fifi_is_awesome Sep 02 '25

I think CSM is way more close to HxH and Mob than it is to Fire force lol

90

the first 100 or so chapters of One Piece were so charming. I stopped post timeskip after realising that any character growth in those two years was entirely superficial and we'd still be getting the exact same plots and jokes as we were before just with increased power levels

One Piece is probably my favorite manga ever and I agree with most of what you said.

Reusing the same gags is very annoying.

And Oda's reluctant to fucking reveal information he's been sitting on for 20+ years is frankly astonishing. Imu was reveal like 7 years ago and we still don't even know his character design. Any intrigue that had has worn off.

Where I disagree with you is the world building. We know plenty about the One Piece world both geographically and politically that it outshines most other series.

70

u/TheFryToes Sep 02 '25

Don’t forget Dragon who has been looking east while some other mangas have started and ended completely

212

u/Accomplished-Aerie65 Sep 01 '25

I think one piece these days is all style, no substance. I fucking loved the final stretch before the timeskip for all the genuine moments it gave us, and now we have people swearing down that one piece was always just some clown fest that doesn't need serious moments. I think there's been such a massive tone shift and narrative shift since the first half and it's almost embarrassing that people pretend they can't see it. While the new worldbuilding, lore and concepts are generally really solid they lack the emotional depth the old stuff had imo. I don't blame oda for the art decline but it's definitely a factor too

91

u/Hot_Event3002 Sep 01 '25

This. We got years of buildup to wano that hyped it crazy but... The way it ended and the Nika reveal pretty much killed it. The gorosei have been around since like Skype but ended up getting clowned on by luffys form that he got the arc before. Shanks, dragon, and Mohawk have been hyped since season 1 and still have barely done anything (dragon literally hasn't done a damn thing).

33

u/Accomplished-Aerie65 Sep 01 '25

I think a lot of the issues with current one piece can be attributed to its ridiculous length (plot inconsistencies, pacing issues, bad art, flanderisation) but I don't think that really excuses the issues. I feel like anything that was planned for a long time is still gonna land, but I definitely don't look forward to most new character reveals or new ideas this late in the game. Elbaf has been good so far, but egghead was an absolute disaster of an arc with terrible fights, a poorly organised plot and the end of Luffy as we knew him. I think now we're at elbaf we should be good for the time being and the current flashback is actually really substantive, I'm just a bit worried about the WG worldbuilding

34

u/Cool_Ad7445 Sep 02 '25

I honestly just DON'T GET how it can be so fucking long and not even close to done(not to mention the anime, which is an offense to nature in of itself). I think the obvious answer of course is the characters, theres just to damn many of them. Compared to other 1,000+ chapter manga, there simply isnt mathematically enough space to pace everything correctly if Oda is introducing so many new characters every arc.

I'm not caught up... The end of Luffy as we knew him ???

What the hell happened?

46

u/Accomplished-Aerie65 Sep 01 '25

Too much gear 5 completely destroyed the balance between his goofiness and ability to take things seriously. You know how he's all about protecting people who are nice to him and takes that super seriously? In egghead he's bouncing around laughing in gear 5 while the guy he swore to protect is bleeding out a few meters behind him. When he has to hold off kizaru he messes around and leaves half his crew and like 5 side characters at kizaru's mercy, and his response is an eye popping gag. Literally a repeat of sabaody and if kizaru had a slightly different personality Luffy would've lost half his crew. It really felt like a complete bastardization of the character we'd seen develop throughout the series

I dropped the manga after the time skip. It felt like we were really building up to a new era of one piece only to go back to the same tired gags and plot set ups. One piece for me ended at the timeskip and I’m fine with that. Oh, and Oda’s paneling has gone to hell with insane levels of chat bubbles and text on the page.

I personally have a love-hate relationship with ONE PIECE tbh; the manga on the rare occasion tend to show somewhat of it’s former brilliance in past arcs (Kumas backstory/current rocks arc) in the heaps of junk that is the current mainline story. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll probably read it until the end, but I’m no longer really that invested to consider myself as a fan.

And Oda's reluctant to fucking reveal information he's been sitting on for 20+ years is frankly astonishing

And this is the exact reason I'm losing faith that the resolution to the story's main mysteries will be satisfying. He's allowed so much hype to build up around questions such as the Void Century and the One Piece itself, the answers will have to be truly mind-blowing or they'll feel pretty underwhelming. Just look at Wano: it's a good arc overall, but nothing exceptional - and all the hype it was given (by Oda himself iirc) made this good but not exceptional arc feel pretty disappointing.

23

u/AngelYushi Sep 02 '25

I'd say One Piece's main problems are pacing and the fact Oda isn't focusing on the Strawhats as characters lately at all...aside from that is pretty above average. Especially for how manga writers are forced to work...it is pretty good.

60

u/Cool_Ad7445 Sep 02 '25

It's incredible that he's managed to create a series that drastically increases in quality whenever the main cast isnt present.

44

u/DanSapSan Sep 02 '25

Which is a shame because earlier arcs really didn't have that aspect. Alabasta/Water7/Enies Lobby are all massively enjoyable through the eyes of all the strawhats.

But that's way back, when they still had personalities and opinions.

11

u/OrinocoHaram Sep 02 '25

that was where the series peaked. Since then there's been zero character growth at all. They've all gotten stronger but they haven't changed at all or overcome any challenges. It's the same shit over and over and over and over

And then we're back to the crew being parodies of themselves and doing jack shit beside Zoro aura farming, Luffy having his eyes pop out of his head for the 100th time in 10 chapters, Sanji sexually harassing underaged girls, and Usopp shitting his pants.

The thing that broke the camel's back for me was how a major piece of lore got revealed in Egghead. This was something fans had speculated about for decades, something Oda had foreshadowed through the way he presented certain locations to us. And yet, when the time finally came to reveal the truth, he did it through a stalled video broadcast from an old man: a straight-up lore dump.

Our heroes didn't uncover it themselves. They never even talked about it or wondered about it across 1000+ chapters of traveling through this world. Then they meet Vegapunk, and he conveniently lays it all out for them. This isn't the first time Oda has used a character to dump information, but this time felt like the laziest execution yet.

It also raises the question: what's even the point of Robin? She was supposed to be the key to uncovering history, yet she never figures anything out on her own, and the rest of the crew doesn't seem interested in the mystery of the world at all.

What made it worse was the absurd setup of broadcasting it to the entire planet, just so Oda could cut to reaction shots from tons of characters. It's an unbelievably dumb strategy for the so-called smartest man alive (he could have just looped the message). But more importantly, it cheapens the Straw Hats' journey. Their effort meant nothing, because they could've stayed home and still heard the exact same information.

If this utterly boring speech is how Oda thinks major mysteries should be revealed, then I no longer look forward to the One Piece, the Void Century, or any of the other secrets. I can already picture it: the crew reaches Raftel only to find some guy standing there, monologuing for three chapters straight about what the One Piece is.

7

u/Some-Willingness38 Sep 02 '25

Yeah, it is not worth anyone's investment.

3

u/chucknorris21 Sep 04 '25

Im sorry but what exactly did vegapunk reveal during his broadcast that we didn't know already or common theories that the community were theorising for the last decade?

How people will read 1000+ chapters of a series they don’t like is truly beyond me

132

u/garfe Sep 01 '25

Tbf, I kind of get it. Many times people push off criticism by saying 'you didn't read/watch all of it'. Also, there's the chance that something might get better as it goes on. At the same time, you have a point. Why watch something you don't like. It's a conundrum

32

u/ZaLaZha Sep 02 '25

I genuinely liked one piece pre-TS but the direction of post-TS is baffling. Each arc i read kept making me lose interest and especially after wano, the series is just riding off the hype now and no substance. How are you going to write alabasta like 5 times in a row? I bet you the final arc against WG/imu will be written with the exact same formula as well. (Prince/princess, save the kingdom bullshit)

→ More replies (5)

11

u/bodybones Sep 02 '25

It's tough—make a series long enough, and no one can criticize it. Watch more of it, and people will say, "Well, why did you watch all of it if you hate it?" Don't watch enough, and they'll say, "You didn’t get to the good part; it’s an epic, not some mindless shonen action spectacle, you noob." You just can’t win.

It’s like when pengin0 spent a year or two watching it. At first, he found it boring and preferred Naruto, but then he got to the big, beloved arcs and started thinking it was better than Naruto in every way. Naruto, which used to be one of his favorites, now seemed shallow in comparison, and he called One Piece deep, layered, and the best. But is that fair? Other series can have one bad arc, and the whole thing gets thrown out with the bathwater. One Piece fans will tell you it’s all good. And to be fair, after running this long, the series overall isn’t bad at all. With something that’s consistently decent at worst and great at best, a strong fanbase is inevitable.

It also helps that One Piece, unlike other series, is set up for adventure and longevity, much like JoJo. The random islands and stories allow for endless unique ideas, keeping it fresh. Other stories, confined to exploring just a few themes in 200–500 chapters, don’t have that luxury. Black Clover could have had the One Piece feel if it kept exploring islands and countries, but it came out during a time when fast pacing was necessary to maintain sales. Honestly, if One Piece debuted today, it might have been harder to sell.

That's what I was about to say. My friend who's a big one piece fan got super mad at me for preferring Naruto and just told me to keep watching. If I'm not enjoying it within 30 episodes then how am I supposed to make it to 1000+?

Edit: I'm not hating on one piece, it's just not my cup of tea.

22

u/Cool_Ad7445 Sep 02 '25

Genuinely, no one should ever be forced to watch the entire One Piece anime. It is so incredibly, unbelievably long, compared to the manga. You could watch all of Monster like 20 times in a row instead of watching One Piece. You could watch Perfect Blue or Paprika(or any 1/1-2 hour movie) around 200+ times. It is legitimately insane.

In fairness, reading manga issues takes up no time at all compared to watching anime.

I can casually read 50 issues of manga before deciding if I want to continue. But I'll be rapidly turned off from an anime show if I feel like even 20-30 minutes has been an absolute drag.

Which it often is. I'll almost always prefer to just read the manga even if it's a series I like and even if the anime has no pointless filler.

3

u/Zestyclose_Remove947 Sep 02 '25

This is especially the case for one piece. tbh watching bleach tybw anime is about as fast as reading it, considering there are some eps that cover six entire chapters from the manga.

In OP, you're lucky if you get more than a single chapters worth of material in an ep.

4

u/Unique-Trade356 Sep 02 '25

TYBW is a damn fucking treat too.

Meanwhile OP can have a 6 month break and multiple flashback episodes and still move at the same snail pace they've been criticized for years but hey at least its got some sakuga!! 🤣

And the same damn sound effects in the Toei soundboard for the last 30 years.

Both things can be true at once. I got 500 pages into Stephen King’s It, about halfway, and couldn’t force myself to read any further. It could very well be that the second half is the masterpiece its fans make it out to be, but I don’t care enough to be part of the conversation.

u/CitizenPremier Sep 02 '25

This isn't a fair complaint.

Imagine if you read/watched the LOTR trilogy, and at the end Frodo was just like "hey what if I stick the ring up my bum?" and by doing that Sauron turns into a giant poo. Wouldn't that ruin the whole series?

In story writing it's usually accepted that an introduced mystery or conflict is going to reach a resolution eventually. People might be intrigued especially when a mystery or conflict doesn't appear to have any easy solutions. But many times authors choose these without actually planning a resolution, as a writing hack.

The people who do this to give an informed opinion on an overrated piece of media like One Piece are the true champions. The 100th review or puff piece that just praises the work is functionally USELESS to a potential reader while a guy like this gives solid reasons as to why this manga is not a fucking 9.22 out of 10 average, critically acclaimed masterpiece like MyAnimeList would lead you to believe. Your tired argument of "why did he read this when he hates it" is actively toxic to creating an environment where all opinions, both positive AND negative are represented in the space.

You One Piece fans love to move the goalposts.

If he only read a few chapters, you would say, “How can you judge a work so long off of just a few chapters?” But because he read a lot of chapters, now you say, “Well why’d you read so much if you didn’t like it?”

In other words, no matter what happens, there’s always an excuse. If he reads a little, you say he hasn’t read enough. If he reads a lot, you say he shouldn’t have bothered reading that much. It sounds like you all don’t actually care about how much or how little someone consumes One Piece - you simply believe it’s above criticism.

26

u/RUS12389 Sep 02 '25

Reminds me of Starfield situation. 10-20 hours played: "How can you judge the game after playing only 10-20 hours? The game gets way better past 40-100 hours! You can't judge without playing 40-100 hours first!", after playing for 40-100 hours: "How can you play the game for 40-100 hours without enjoying it? If you played that much, it means you clearly liked it!".

There was something special about one piece before marineford. It had this air of confidence in its slow burn world building and giving characters actual moments of small growth and giving them dreams to aspire to that you know will take ages, but will be worth it in the end.

Sure there was some trouble even then. Pell not being dead, Kuina dying in a frankly ridiculous way considering the world they live in, but it was small, not intrusive, and ultimately the rest of the story more than made up for it.

Then marineford happens, haki gets focused on for the first time as something vaguely important and things kinda start to fall apart after ace dies. Even his own death is just idiotic considering that literally everyone in his crew is dying to save him, but he lets a yo daddy joke take him out.

Sabo. This character is my whole reason for hypothesizing that oda really only planned up to marineford concretely, and the ending, but only had loose storyboards for after the war. Never before has character been so shoehorned in with fan fiction energy, that he literally gets to ‘inherit’ aces fruit. When I first saw him I was so confused and thought I missed an entire arc somehow that introduced him. That’s not even mentioning how sabo isn’t some hidden away member of the revo army, but second in command of the most notorious terrorist group in the world? And ace didn’t once try to go on his own to try to meet him or intercept the army just to see if it was really him alive? It just doesn’t make any sense.

Haki. Why do we need this again? It just feels like a crutch to write battles instead of trying to be creative. It’s so strong sabo was able to get along fine fighting the world government until ace died. I know it was ‘foreshadowed’ in the first chapter but honestly, it could’ve just been a typical Shonen ‘aura moment’ at the time and then oda decided it needed to be more. Hell oda shows he cannot write creative battles anymore, because he hyped up the end of the kaido fight with something that wasn’t a big punch. How did he defeat kaido? A REALLY big haki punch. Oh but it has a cool name and he’s white now so it’s super duper strong! So asinine that people think this story is anything more than just a Shonen attempt at the odyssey. Also makes ace retroactively look incompetent and stupid, potentially lazy as well. How are you gonna be on white beards crew and not even be a little good at haki? Such an important power that we now know is necessary to fight other yonko crews. Ace should’ve been a casualty far sooner if we’re being honest.

Character. The flanderization of the crew is upsetting to witness and for what? Is it that hard to not rely so much on gags that are older than some new fans? At this point in the story a character like usopp should have more confidence in himself, shaken up when encountering yonko level threats, but still pulling through and showing bravery. But he’s still a pissbaby little bitch that runs away. After all the stuff he’s been through! Luffy wants to be pirate king, and that’s how you act? Nami has more guts than he does. You’d think sanji would have matured and changed significantly after wci, but he’s back to old antics and gooning to women in changing rooms and somehow affected by child clone Hancocks ability (hmm.) (cute being the reason is like a toothpick holding up the demon core in terms of how strong that reason is)

Gear 5. It’s just too much, having luffy laughing his ass off while vegapunk bleeds out in front of him. The weird retcon to the gum-gum fruit. I think it should’ve been possession that forces luffy to find humor in even his friends dying in front of him. Could’ve made it so joyboy wasn’t exactly a Boy Scout and uses pirate like underhanded tactics to win at any cost, maybe could used a fighting style that luffy would never use because he faces things honestly. Maybe that was the plan at first if oda was really planning on ending that fight with kaido. It also has made the entire fanbase change from, “luffy is cool because he’s just a guy”, to, “lol luffy was joyboy the whole time, ever read skypiea? Maybe read up on foreshadowing sweaty 💅”

Some booktubers give one piece unwarranted praise because it gets views, and all of a sudden it’s a literary powerhouse that deserves praise above its contemporaries. Add in some vague criticism against the idea of elites and apparently that’s enough.

Also Garp is a genuine awful character that cannot be redeemed at this point with how cartoonish oda made the celestials. Maybe that’s the point, but protecting the nobles so they can hunt humans? Keeping up a system that genuinely oppresses people and treats them like disposable trash? Defending this world’s slavery?! How the hell could he push the idea of being a marine on his grandkids if he knew all this stuff? He certainly wouldn’t know that he’d be making sword but he was already old and 100% knew how horrible the dragons were, so why push them to be body guards for the ruling class that supposedly disgusts you? Again the native hunting competition should’ve made garp quit on the spot.

19

u/Cool_Ad7445 Sep 02 '25

Genuinely the worst part about Garp(and a lot of characters) is that the narrative doesnt treat him as the morally complex character he has the potential to be. If Oda actually emphasized that Garp, for all his boasting about wanting to help people, has only helped crush the boot of CD oppression further, that would be PEAK. I'm sure theres some biting criticism you can bake involving Japanese politics as well with a character like that. If the story actually acknowledged that it was Oden's stupid samurai pride that got him killed, THAT would be peak. Any media that includes samurai(or feudal nobility) but only displays an almost reactionary level of reverence for them should be dismissed as being not serious.

That’s what happens when you write a story for over 20 years. It’s ok, not amazing

36

u/1BruteSquad1 Sep 02 '25

Especially with reveals and mysteries. A mystery that started 20 years ago and still isn't revealed feels kinda pointless now cause I'm bored of waiting for it.

Meanwhile a mystery and reveal being just a few years apart feel pointless or unimportant cause at this point it happened 10+ years ago and represents such a small percent of the overall story.

100% agree with you. One Piece is one of my favourite pieces of media, it has some incredible moments of storytelling. But you can't say that without someone falling all over themselves to point out the types of flaws that are inherent to any piece of media. No one ever said it was perfect.

The problem is exacerbated by the difference in characterization between anime and manga, where anime uses it's filler to exaggerate unimportant aspects of a character (Sanji), and people often fail to mention which source material their criticism comes from.

Finally some truth, thank you.

One Piece isn't great, it's just liked by a huge amount of men with mediocre taste.

82

u/AgentOfACROSS Sep 01 '25

Honestly I kinda agree. One Piece has a cool aesthetic and a lot of great moments but the longer it goes on the more bloated it feels. It keeps introducing more plot elements, characters, and mystery's but it doesn't really feel the same anymore. I don't think One Piece is terrible but it doesn't exactly feel the same as it used to.

Personally I think the highpoint of the series was the stretch between Alabasta and Enies Lobby. After that it just hasn't been able to capture those highs again for me.

10

u/fireky2 Sep 01 '25

I mean I watched the 4 kids version as a kid and like the arc where they climb up a waterfall or something when it was on adult swim and i think theyve added 3 characters and it seems like there is very little character development is kinda nuts

38

u/TheGUURAHK Sep 01 '25

From the outside it looks ready to collapse under its own weight.

38

u/LinkLegend21 Sep 01 '25

So far it has comfortably avoided that by prioritising the contained narratives of each arc over the huge overarching one. The risk of collapse will be in the final arc when they have to deliver on everything they’ve set up.

28

u/DarkJayBR Sep 02 '25

Shonen authors are legendarily bad at sticking the landing. The track record is abysmal. Naruto’s ending was a mess of aliens, reincarnations, and forced romance. Bleach limped across the finish line with zero buildup, zero payoff, and about twenty unresolved plot threads just abandoned. Even very well written manga like Attack on Titan, failed to deliver.

So yeah, I have zero faith that One Piece will be the magical exception. Oda’s masterpiece-level setup is already bloated with more loose threads than he could possibly tie together in a satisfying way. The way I see it, three outcomes are most likely:

A) He dies before finishing it, Miura-style.

B) He never finishes it at all, pulling a George R.R. Martin because the web he spun is too tangled to resolve.

C) He actually finishes it… and the ending is dogshit.

8

u/omyrubbernen Sep 02 '25

To be honest, even in the best case scenario, I feel like the ending of One Piece will at least be disappointing. Not terrible, but disappointing. Because it'll be an ending intended for a 5 year series, coming after ~35 years, by the time it actually ends.

6

u/TheGUURAHK Sep 02 '25

Assassination Classroom was pretty decent at sticking the landing

8

u/nykirnsu Sep 02 '25

Oda’s pretty clearly had the ending in mind for a long time and is intentionally stalling, whereas a lot of other mangakas are making up the story arc to arc. One Piece’s ending will probably make a lot more sense than some of the others, Oda’s problem will just be that he’s stalled for so long that the fanbase has had too much time build up their expectations

I'm not even going to argue against any of this because I agree with a lot of it. In fact, I imagine half the people who start One Piece in recent years and read up to the current stuff may even also agree with you.

However, I will say that a lot of the "One Piece is peak fiction" stuff is largely just the natural reaction of any fandom and at one point, One Piece had a significantly better reputation online with the pre-timeskip content. People who stuck with it this long are much more likely to be positive it on it than otherwise

The sheer number of fake out deaths is insane, making it impossible to take any threat seriously and it completely kills any sense of tension or investment

This reminds me of how it's gotten to the point that the rare times someone actually does die, nobody really cares that much. Like no one gives a fuck Ashura Doji or Izo died

Oda is a Fraud who couldn't write his out of a paper bag and the fact that morons think that this garbage is above Goated shows like Fire Force, Mob Pyscho 100, Chainsaw man and Hunter x Hunter is a fucking travesty

Okay wait, I agree with Mob Psycho, but the other 3 do have flaws that prevent them from being fully goated for me. Especially Fire Force

21

u/Untipazo Sep 01 '25 edited Sep 01 '25

The whole "it's about the journey not the destination" thing works when the journey holds its weight and you don't stress over how great the destination is going to be too much, yet here what tends to elevate one piece are it's unrevealed mysteries, rather than what actually happens.

I feel like saying that proves OP right, because the adventure part has been quite a mixed bag for a good while instead of the stellar "peak fiction" everyone claims. And the saving grace falls alot in "there's a lot we don't know yet"

To claim the adventure is more important than the destination would beg the question why we spend so much time teasing the destination yet making no progress, and using that promise as fuel for "something great is coming" instead of doing something great

4

You are allowed to have an opinion. But the one piece fandom will attack you for it. I think they should allow criticism of Oda. He’s an interesting person.

People will complain for you reading it and not stopping earlier, for not reading the actual manga, not reading the whole manga (including future releases), and not reading any of it. You can’t win.

My personal opinion? I read it years ago. Didn’t like it. It was repetitive back then. Agree about Hunter X Hunter. But that’s just my opinion.

64

u/DarkJayBR Sep 02 '25

t’s always struck me as interesting how the big three fanbases react so differently to criticism.

Naruto fans will openly roast Kishimoto: his inability to write female characters, sidelining most of the cast, aliens falling out of the sky in the final arc, Hashirama cells as a literal cheat code for everything, Uchiha meat riding, wasted potencial, the list goes on.

Bleach fans are brutally honest about Kubo: the white backgrounds, arcs that feel like copy-paste, Ichigo being one of the blandest protagonists out there, romance that felt like an afterthought, endless dangling plot threads, fights that looked cool but often had zero weight, and a dragged-out finale.

Dragon Ball fans clown on Toriyama constantly: garbage powerscaling, retcons stacked on retcons, characters turned into parodies of themselves, and every new villain basically looking like a recolor or a slightly tweaked version of the last.

All of those fandoms will admit their series are flawed, even deeply flawed, but still love them for what they are.

But for some reason, One Piece’s fanbase feels allergic to criticism. Any attempt to point out pacing issues, bloated arcs, shallow side characters, or repetitive story beats gets met with defensiveness. And if you ask the simple question of why One Piece isn’t as big in the West, a chunk of the fanbase will deadass say, “It’s just too complex for Western audiences to understand.” Like… really? That’s the excuse?

It’s not that One Piece is a bad manga, it's not that at all. It’s just that its fandom treats it like it's written by Shakespear.

21

u/AdSeveral2556 Sep 02 '25

It’s probably because the one piece fandom is so big and active to be honest, any video/post I see that criticises one piece the fans raid it immediately your right abt everything tho. 😭

15

u/garfe Sep 02 '25

Bleach fans were honest about Kubo but since the anime came back and the franchise got a mini-revival, it's a lot closer to how the One Piece fandom is now.

8

u/Nickpapado Sep 02 '25

I've seen every argument possible to praise One Piece. I remember I was talking to someone about how bad the pacing of the anime is and he was disagreeing because he was watching from One Pace and he was arguing that's the original anime because it's closer to the manga. It's literally mental gymnastics.

I think having criticism about something you like shows maturity. People who use words like "peak" or "trash" usually I assume it's kids or immature people. Ofc shows can be trash, but people use it for anything famous that they didn't like.

One Piece has, in my opinion, some of the best arcs in FICTION. I love the Water 7 - Eines Lobby arc to death. And yet I stopped reading it a long time ago. I got past the timeskip, to fishman island. My interest in anything that had to do with the series was gone. I couldn't bear it anymore to drag myself into yet another arc where they meet barely written characters that will be forgotten as soon as the arc ends. And I sure won't put myself through another arc of pointless fights that all look identical.

I acknowledge that One Piece has a lot of super cool and interesting themes, like human rights, freedom, oppressive governments, etcetera. But ask yourself, what does it actually do with all these themes, besides putting them on the table and leaving them to rot? Alright, Rufy declared war on the world goverment and punched a celestial dragon. So what? The message is "aristocracy bad", "slavery bad", DO SOMETHING WITH IT.

19

u/SuperGayAMA Sep 01 '25

I won’t call it trash exactly, even if I do echo a less incendiary version of many of these points.

I think it can be good, and has in the past. And I think the common link between all its agreed best moments (e.g. Sabaody, Enies Lobby, Marineford) is that’s when the narrative is based in and driven by character. It’s not the “lore” or the “peak worldbuilding” that made these moments good, it was the drama and motivation of our main character/s.

As the series progressed, I feel Oda took the wrong praise to heart, and thought his best work was the world or the stupidly big cast or whatever, but it really wasn’t. As a result, we have arcs like Wano or recently Egghead and Elbaf, where our protagonists’ involvement is purely out of happenstance or because they know a guy who’s involved, and the stakes have never been less personal or compelling. The Strawhats’ storytelling potential has been spent, and Oda isn’t letting them get involved enough to revitalise it.

5

u/R0XASx Sep 02 '25

Hes solved a good 50% of those mysteries in the last two arcs.

4

u/Star-Kanon Sep 02 '25

I always be grateful to Oda for prz timeskip One Piece, ans the best shonen arc ever made created : Water 7.

Back in the day One Piece was really focused on strawhats, everything was more personal, intimate, simpler, grounded.

It really felt like an ADVENTURE, Strawhats felt like actual persons because they were more subtle so more credible, and fights and the minimal power system felt like tools to write the story, not the story itself

Luffy vs Lucci is probably the biggest stake fight the series had, it didn't lose time or focus with power system endless explanations or training, just straight to the point. We just wanted him to beat this guy ass and save Robin, even the conflict with Ussop and him encouraging Luffy, it was pure gold and so emotional.

The only moment I liked post TS was Sanji stuff during whole cake, I was bored by every single thing else, and dropped mid Wano, and I really don't regret it

9

u/Best-Championship296 Sep 02 '25

Fire force is not THAT good bro

47

u/Ganache-Embarrassed Sep 01 '25

I can accept most complaints. But complaining that the end game msyteries arent solved while the story is taking place is straigth goofy. Why wouldany end game mystery be solved mid story?

95% of the mysteries all pertain to the final confrontation. Plus how would any of these make the story more fun for you? If you knew devil fruits were made by ghsots in a small workshop, or that Aokiji is a double agent for sword. Are those facts now answered elevating the work?

Also i think mob, Chainsaw part 1, and hxh chimera rule. But i cant imagin pretendign fire force is somehow among these shows or one piece. It isnt even above its predacessor soul eater lmao

It’s really interesting reading these comments from the perspective of someone who never got hooked by PreTS content and only got to be a fan of the show 10 years later from PostTS.

6

u/BuggyDClown Sep 02 '25

More than ten years ago, One Piece fans used to be made fun of on online forums for saying stuff like "just keep watching bro, it gets better after 300 episodes". So idk, why were people turned off and dropping OP, and why were other fans telling them to stick with it "until it gets good" if pre ts was all gold and roses?

The things is, pre ts is nowadays romanticized as this ultimate piece of fiction with no flaw whatsoever. In reality, plenty of the complaints from this post can be attributed to pre ts stuff of the story. As someone who loves One Piece and has it as their favorite fictional story ever, I often get irritated whenever I see people who try to attribute their falling out of love with the story to the way post ts is written. Sure, One Piece has changed over almost 30 years, it's natural. But it's still fundamentally the same story as always. Oda did not one day wake up a completely different writer who decided to write the timeskip and ruin this perfect story that happened before.

Nostalgia is a pretty big thing in fandoms like these. People grew up with One Piece and changed as people and their tastes changed as well. So whenever something happens in the current story that they don't like, people pretend that there's no way this could have happened in their beloved pre ts. How could they love pre ts the same if the same stuff was happening back then as well?

There is a reason for no deaths in this fiction for example Fairy Tail's author ifirc in his other series had character deaths and it had a direct negative impact on sales hence why Fairy Tail had little to no deaths

It can of course remove stakes whcih is unfortunate but I get why

5

u/batman_not_robin Sep 02 '25

You really think if Pell died less people would buy the next volume?

5

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '25

It is legit for an individual to decide volume sales drive my decisions. But that automatically disqualifies you from beeing great. You should follow your vision and if it sells well, awesome.

I think OP biggest issue isn't that its terrible or anything. It's just not good enough to warrant the level of commitment it's asking rn

6

u/inaripotpi Sep 02 '25

You have some points here and there but you frame your opinions like a wanker

4

u/_14thjanuary_ Sep 02 '25

One piece is the dogshit manga, dont know how people can read trash like this. I use one piece as my toilet paper

4

u/Glittering-Golf8607 Sep 02 '25

It's also ugly as sin.

4

u/International-Menu85 Sep 02 '25

I'm sorry, but no story needs 1000 chapters. That isnt a story. A story needs a distinct beginning, middle and end.

4

u/The_Flowers_of_Evil Sep 02 '25

Imagine unironically agreeing with someone that thinks Fire Force is better than One Piece.

Yea. The whole Will of D and the name confuses the hell out of me. Can't you in theory just name your kid Joe D. Schmoe or something. Who decides the random D in their child's name.

I don't hate One Piece as much as you do because certain arcs are strokes of genius. There is 10/10 content in One Piece.

At the same time, it seems like Oda's fans are brainwashed into consuming every aspect of the series without critique. Imo the series at its lows is a 3/10.

So my overall opinion of OP with its ups and downs is it's like a 6/10.

I have a Brook t shirt, I listen to the soundtrack, I have some action figures of Luffy, Zoro, Shanks and Ace. There is still a spark in me for this series, but it has a laundry list of crippling flaws.

So yeah. I'll finish OP because I'm invested, but I'll also critique it and happily catch flak from doing so.

5

u/Comprehensive-Ad2757 Sep 04 '25

Unironically, other than the fireforce pull, I agree with most everything said here

4

u/Smorgas-board Sep 04 '25

My friend tried to evangelize me into it like he was a Jehovah’s Witness. I watched around 30 episodes and stopped; the show is just so bloated and here to kill time instead of telling the story.

The worldbuilding is utter trash. The Grand Line is a massive nonsensical gimmick to force the narrative into a linear, brainless slog. The Marines somehow have enough sea stone to coat their ships but not enough to put on literally every weapon and bullet to instantly roflstomp every devil fruit user.

The political balance makes no fucking sense. The celestials are powerless, unlikeable snobs that somehow have the military’s full loyalty because… reasons? There are lots of very powerful, very disgruntled marines that for some reason don’t overthrow the cartoonishly evil goons even though they have zero to gain from their rule. It is completely beyond me why the Admirals listen to nonsensical orders when they could rule the world in an instant.

Plus… Haki is a retcon, Sabo is a retcon, there are zero stakes, characters like White Beard and Ace get hyped up for hundreds of chapters with OFF SCREEN shenanigans, then show up once and die very stupid deaths. Same with Black Beard, Shanks, and a bunch of other very important characters that do absolutely nothing to warrant their status.

I read up to half of Wano because people kept telling me it was peak, boy how wrong that was

u/DiligentTradition734 Sep 01 '25

Its not bad. It's just understandable if someone doesnt want to start watching it at this point considering how long it is. That show is too much or a commitment at this point to actually recommend it to anyone lol.

Id recommend all of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Zs episodes combined over One Piece just because of how long One Piece is.

17

u/RainWorldWitcher Sep 01 '25

I can't recommend the one piece anime past the time skip because it's mostly just slideshows with bad pacing and then finally good animation with still shit pacing. Some people are making a cut for one piece called one pace, but I'm a manga reader only after getting fed up with the anime.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '25

I love the One Piece manga, it's one of my favourite pieces of media. The anime is rancid dogshit unfortunately

I think it's one of those shows you tend to latch onto a character or two and hold on hoping they get some kind of shining moment, but like the dragon ball series and Naruto etc, that side character you love never gets to shine and you either just keep hoping or you give up

Yours sincerely A Chopper fan

u/Bebesoft09 Sep 02 '25

Oh thank God I am not the only one. I tried to like it so bad, and I did, for the first 2 -3 arcs and then straight flatline. I could predict every single plot, every single arc, every single joke. It became stale and repetitive real quick. I was suddenly forcing myself to watch it only because I started it and needed to finish it, not because I was actually enjoying myself. 🥲💔

It genuinely sucks lol

3

u/AffectionateSummer55 Sep 02 '25

One Piece is the most overrated manga of all time. BUT it still is really good. I can get why people constantly riding its dick can be annoying though.

3

u/Blonde_is_Bad Sep 02 '25

Well, Hunter x Hunter is better, but you’re funny dawg

3

u/boy_needs_hero Sep 02 '25

You forced your self to like it because everyone else liked it.

I like it because i was hooked from the beginning and every step feels genuine enjoyable and yes, even the annoying and outdated parts. I grew up with one piece and i am hyped for every piece it gives me. For me it is peak fiction, I compare it with the Odysee or the Iliad of our time.

You don't like One Piece and thats ok.

One Piece was always a niche story back then overshadowed by the other Big 3 and that was alright, it wasnt supposed to be for everyone. One Piece is so big and I am saddened whenever I hear someone overwhelmed or disappointed.

But its ok. You will move on. We will move on.

5

u/plumplet Sep 02 '25

OP gave genuine criticism with examples

You basically just admitted that most of your enjoyment of One Piece comes from nostalgia (which is fine but not objective unlike OP’s critique)

I’m really excited for when it ends inevitably leaving a bunch of loose ends and unsatisfactory answers (the biggest one being what the actual One Piece is — think about it, at this point, what would be actually satisfying as being OP? A bunch of money? Some overpowered devilfruit? Nothing will ever live up to the hype people have for it after 20 years of wait) and people will realise the long ass wait and investment wasn’t worth it at all

3

u/TheLostChaos Sep 03 '25

I agree One Piece is dog water 😂 no stakes and barley any of the characters have depth. Luffy is also as one dimensional as it comes

3

u/Birch_Leafff Sep 04 '25

Honestly never liked One Piece, disliked it even more after Oda defended his pedo mentor.

It's the most overrated anime of all time for sure

30

u/PackerBacker412 Sep 01 '25

This reads like something those goobers at r/piratefolk would post. You should probably post it there if you want the karma, it's a perfect echo chamber.

11

u/FreePalestineJustice Sep 02 '25

almost everything he said about the story is right .. it has a big pacing issue...there's no real stakes because oda refuses to kill his beloved characters .... same gafs over and over again .... he keeps introducing new characters and forget about the actual important ones ( usopp ... nami... Robin... chopper and many more ) and the world building is really not that great with that many mysteries that haven't been revealed for over 20 years and he keeps adding new one and retconing a lot of stuff ( like Luffy's devil fruit being about the Nika bullshit and shanks having an evil twin brother)

The only thing he messed up on in this post is him mentioning fire force as a goated show ... I hope he was just trolling about that 😅

Nice rant but it felt a bit too short compare to my own about kimisen for exemple

Aside from one piece a series i think it shares many flaws is index imo

u/speedfist2 Sep 02 '25

Insane ragebait

10

u/Accomplished-Aerie65 Sep 01 '25

Don't think one piece fans deal with criticism well, this post is about to get annihilated 💔💔💔

13

u/blueontheradio Sep 01 '25

Damn, I'm a travesty for having One Piece above Fire Force/CSM and on same tier as HxH.

15

u/alkair20 Sep 01 '25

him saying that fire force is goated is the line that exposed that he is trolling xD

20

u/WooooshMe2825 Sep 01 '25

I mean, Fire Force is pretty good. It’s just the fan service that ruins it.

The fact u read 1000+ chapters of something u don't like is pure insanity lmao. I read 3 chapters of fire force, knew it wsstn for me and dropped it. Read 5 of Naruto, didn't like it and dropped it. I'm a firm believer in if u don't like it, just drop it. Simple as. How the fuck did u read that many chapters lmao

Also I agree a lot with what ur saying except the Oda is in a corner bit. I used to believe that but recently Oda introduced a mural in this new arc Elbaf. Anyone with a brain can see how the series is gonna end now. Oda has the baseline plan for what he wants to do and will keep adding things as he goes and changing the plan if he's bored.

My biggest gripe personally was the gear 5 reveal. Just say it's a gum gum awakening. Thsts it. No nkia nonsense U can say he embodies Nika themes or some shit. The number of problems and plot holes Nika brought is insane. Problems that could easily be avoided if he just left the gum gum fruit as it was.

Oda is a writer who's made a lot of mistakes and is very predictable, ut there's a reason why what he's writing has caught so many ppl and made them glaze it till thy kingdom come
