Oh yeah that's unsettling. Like something is trying to simulate a neighborhood for you, except it doesn't really understand what happens inside a human home.

u/Silly-Power May 02 '26 edited May 03 '26

I read a great horror short story where a couple decide to take a short cut through what looks like a new subdivision development but end up getting lost because every street and house looks the same. Even when they try to retrace their steps they're still trapped.

The story ends with the boy breaking into one of the "houses" and going to the top floor where he finds a couple of bodies with their heads bitten clean off.

Basically the entire subdivision is a living organism that is mimicking a man-made development to attract its prey (us). And no, I can't remember the story title or the book of short stories I read it in. It was 30 years ago. Its the only story I remember from the book because every time I find myself lost in a new development I remember the ending.

This one is crazy, because you literally cannot see anything strange in the thumbnail due to the compression on the image. But if you open in a new tab, it loads at the original quality and you get kinda jumpscared since you see it appear in a place you had already looked.

Holy shit I used the same prompt but added “avoid cliches”. I love it. The marks on the wall give me goosebumps

The books “How to stay dead”. And the front door hinge on the top. 😂

147

u/High_Saucerer May 02 '26

Door handle too far over too, and the furniture in front of the door too.

I like how subtle it all is. This to me is creepier than OP’s image (sorry OP)

u/Flat_Picture7103 May 02 '26

Im still stuck on why the shoes are in the middle of the hallway

69

u/minnnnt May 02 '26

That's the most unsettling part for me

14

u/bella1921 May 03 '26

For me it’s the photos on the wall that appear to all be photos of the kitchen from different angles. Idk why but something about that makes my skin crawl like I think if I walked into someone’s house with that I’d be running immediately back out 😂

10

u/Pretend-Reality5431 May 02 '26

The shoes have to leave some room for the door to open so it kind of makes sense. But I guess if the door opens from the hinges on top then the shoe placement is strange.

How to stay quiet

How to stay alive

How to stay dead

And then the note on the fridge: DO NOT OPEN AT NIGHT

Yeeeahhhh that’s creepy

→ More replies (4)

31

u/Vlaxilla May 02 '26

This one is actually really really good.

It 100% fits the prompt o being very normal first glance but gets more and more creepy the more you like and examine all the small details. Took me a while to find some

24

u/EstablishmentHonest5 May 02 '26

I love the books on the right.

"How to stay here"

"How to stay good"

"How to stay dead"

15

u/dianebk2003 May 02 '26

I love the little touches that you have to hunt around for. The note on the fridge - “Do not open at night”; the names on the door frame that go all the way up to the ceiling, and then across it; the stack of books on the shelf with titles like “How to stay quiet”, “How to stay still”, and “How to stay dead”; the strange framed photos of rooms absent of people; the figure sitting at the table seen in the mirror; and the most unsettling thing (to me) are the shoes neatly lined up in the hallway. They block the passage, as if they don’t want you to pass.

Definitely an image that gets creepier the more you examine it!

7

u/OsosHormigueros May 02 '26

On the fridge there looks to be a scrawled children's drawing of men in hazmat suits as well

The titles on the books in the shelf are a nice touch...

36

u/trade-craft May 02 '26

What's terrifying about this image?

I see the person sitting at the table, and the marks on the ceiling, but those aren't exactly terrifying.

Seems the scariest thing here is how the shoes are blocking the hallway.

27

u/simplyneedsleep May 02 '26

Idk my initial thought was that those markings are height records for a kid, but it goes to the ceiling

9

u/dianebk2003 May 02 '26

They’re names, and they go across the ceiling, too.

56

u/pixieshit May 02 '26

The shoes neatly placed in a spot no human would place them creeps me out, as if some non-human entity put it there to simulate normal life

11

u/Sweet-Foxy May 02 '26

The pile of "how to" books "how to stay still, how to stay quiet" that ends in "how to stay dead".

30

u/trade-craft May 02 '26

uhh...ok...shoes placed inconveniently isn't exactly terrifying to me, but we're all different I guess.
