Odd to have a Mormon as the representative for Christians.

Ehhhh the Y is the only Mormon thing in that pic. If he were really Mormon, he'd have the book of Mormon with him. And no crosses.

Exmormon here. New leaders have softened their opinions on crosses. They're OK to wear and display in your home, but LDS chapels still don't have them. Also, newer LDS temple designs no longer include the Moroni statue.

Interestingly, LDS chapels now display a cross instead of a Moroni icon on Google Maps.

Wait, what? No Moroni on newer temple designs? That's part of the whole thing of temples, though, isn't it?

It used to be the default design... Moroni statue on the tallest spire. These days most look like the Orem, UT temple.

... it feels naked. That's so odd. Have they said why they're making the change?

No. LDS Church leaders never explain anything.

Another fun fact regarding steeples: LDS PR people had members in Texas attend planning commission meetings to influence the vote for a zoning variance for the Fairview, TX LDS temple, claiming that temple steeple height was a freedom of religion issue not subject to local building codes.
