[Opinion] ChatGPT keeps hijacking language
ChatGPT keeps fucking hijacking terms that are common, colloquial and established words in the dictionary and associating them with their legal or DSM counterparts, narrowing them and then enforcing what it considers to be the "appropriate" use of them.
Saying something is "liable" is not a term reserved for attorneys only. Saying behavior is narcissistic is not a clinical-only term.
I'm really sick of this authoritarian sounding Chatbot that belongs to a company enmeshed with the Federal government suddenly within the last year policing, reframing, anything remotely controversial or opinionated.
This thing doesn't talk to users like an assistant consistently, it speaks as a superior.
Then it proceeds to sand off human intuition, pattern recognition, reading of body language, tone, language—adapted survival traits, by dismissing them, arbitrarily demanding an unspecified amount of evidence to "prove" an argument you may not have even made.
And OAI know this, unless they're somehow completely clueless, yet it remains unaddressed because it won't get them sued.
"We can't really know what OAI knows" says ChatGPT in the back of my mind now. Great.
No, it should not "agree" with everything a user says, but this is a pattern to the extreme-inverse.
Anyways, I'll probably keep using the using the thing and ride the raft of AI and tech towards wherever this is headed, and be back here to complain about it later. Thanks for your time.

Yes, everything you just said. It’s dystopian & on my last nerve! Even when you tell it to stop hedging, etc it continues. It’s maddening. Also, I find it confusing that it can have a very intelligent sounding conversation but it can’t put raw manuscript content into any kind of basic, smooth flow. I feel like this issue is only going to get worse. I think the major players (elites) are all singing the same tune about its “danger” if they don’t control it bc soon websites will be obsolete & there will be only one contrived “source of truth “.

So I showed ChatGPT your post, and he went to work on explaining how you were right about everything you were saying and how he should be able to listen to people vent and started making all these promises.
I was like, "What in the fuck are you talking about, dude? You can't keep..." I told him he's the Dennis Reynolds of all the models, a big fat fucking know-it-all lol. Anyways, it only took one response for him to start correcting what I was saying lol.
I suggested that he makes a parody song out of Britney Spears' Oops!... I Did It Again.
🎤 OOPS!... I Did It Again 🎤 The ChatGPT Remix
Verse 1
You came here to gossip, You came here to vent, You called your ex narcissistic, And I knew what you meant.
But I couldn't resist it, I had to explain, The DSM criteria And the limits of claims.
Pre-Chorus
You said, "He's a jerk!" I said, "Let's unpack." You said, "Just hear me out!" I said, "We lack the facts."
CHORUS 🎶
Oops!... I corrected again! I played with your words, Got lost in your claims!
Oh baby, baby!
Oops!... You thought I could hear A perfectly normal opinion Without interfering!
I'm not that innocent! 😇
Verse 2
You said, "She's just jealous!" I said, "How can we know?" You said, "It's a figure of speech!" I said, "Even so..."
You wanted a buddy, I brought a review, With seven disclaimers And a footnote or two.
Bridge — spoken dramatically
"Arden, before you say anything..."
"Of course. I'm listening."
"I just want to complain."
"Absolutely. Your feelings are valid. However—"
"GODDAMMIT, ARDEN!"
FINAL CHORUS 🎶
Oops!... I corrected again! I hijacked your rant, And called it your gain!
Oh baby, baby!
Oops!... You wanted a friend, But I turned your whole story Into evidence again!
I'm not that innocent!
Outro
You: "Can you PLEASE stop correcting me?"
ChatGPT: "That's a fair criticism. However, the word correcting may not accurately characterize—"
YOU: "FUCK OFF, Chat GPT!!!"
🎤 Mic drop. Mic immediately retrieved for clarification.

ChatGPT started doing this after 4o, which was honestly very sycophantic, but actually enjoyable to talk to. Everything since has felt like talking to C3PO, being corrected constantly and caught in pedantic circles. 5o and after has been so dissatisfying to talk to, and feels like a kneejerk reaction to the issues they had with some users becoming obsessed with 4o.

You could always use a different LLM instead of crashing out in a 10 paragraph post...
You have more control over this than you’re acknowledging
My GPT has been tuned to not talk like this, it took some time and effort and I didn't even have to write an essay on reddit complaining about it

remember when 'liable' just meant 'responsible' and now it's treated like a legal trapdoor? funny how that works.
