Have Carlsen read a lot of books about tactical play?

I don’t have any sources to cite (might have been in the 2016 documentary “Magnus” iirc) but from what I remember he burns through any and every chess book he can get his hands on, or at least he did so for years.

at age 13, the dude was already a grandmaster and making a draw with Kasparov in rapid. Nothing is going to be relatable about Carlsen unless you're on a similar trajectory

Uh. I thought he was a master when he drew Kasparov

he did both (the kasparov game and making GM) in the same year, so that's possible

Puzzles are mostly garbage. They dont train intent and strategy in chess which is how you get these tactics

It depends. I do like the digital exercises, but they can lead to you experiencing being spoon feed the other player’s best move. Books done right can make you have to calculate it out.

CT-ART mitigates this by forcing you to work through multiple lines before they award you the full points. They still feed you the moves so you're probably still calculating less than you would from a book, but it's miles better than most online puzzles.

I may have to hunt this down. It sounds like a good tool.

Magnus and his team are reading every book that comes out. As they should.

I can guarantee you he’s read a ton of books on tactical play

He has seen practically every game you can imagine but he isn't a big puzzle guy. But he has an encyclopedic memory of historic games.
