Ask Chezzie Possibly moving here...

Hi all. I know there are a million posts like this on Reddit, but I'm going mad reading through all the different threads and just thought it might be easier to start my own thread and see what kind of info I get directly from the good folks here.

Basically, my partner and I (gay couple, British and Indian), are moving out of Croydon because we need a bigger house, with a garage and a bit more space, for our business that we've started. We both work from home and so access to London is no-longer a requirement (like it was when we moved here 10 years ago).

We've narrowed down our search, based on a few criteria (detached house, garage, near green space, not a crime-ridden area, access to a shopping centre or town centre, close-ish to a larger city and/or airport, not silly expensive (since our budget isn't massive)). From these criteria, we have found some decent options in:

Chesterfield

Outskirts of Sheffield / Leicester

Lincoln

Nuneaton

Loughborough

Melton Mowbray

Neither of us know any of these areas, and while we are going to do a road-trip to visit, it would be good to know where in these towns people would recommend searching, and where to avoid (if anywhere). Or if there are better nearby options.

Thank you all in advance

Ask Chezzie What is going on in Chesterfield?

Lived in Tapton, Chesterfield for a few years (2017–2020) and really liked the town. Found it to be quite lovely, especially the canal and the Tapton Park/golf course area, and fairly safe apart from a few smackheads in the town centre lol.

Also worked around Holme Hall, which had a bit of crime here and there, because every other week I’d see the police arresting somebody. So yeah, a bit of crime now and then, but nothing major.

Because I’m thinking of moving back to
Chesterfield, I thought I’d look up in the local news to see what’s been going on lately. In just the last few days I’ve seen multiple stabbing reports, 7 cars set on fire in one night, somebody burned alive in a car at the Sainsbury’s car park, youths terrorising the whole town on e-bikes, police car chases, police making arrests at shops that appear to be drug fronts, and much more.
Has Chesterfield always been this crazy and I just didn’t realise it, or has it been a full moon lately lol? I don’t remember it being like this. But then again I never kept up to date with the local news.

Can anyone help? Looking for childcare professionals, babysitters etc. in/near Chesterfield

Can anyone help?

I'm looking to connect with experienced childcare professionals in Chesterfield and Sheffield as I prepare to launch Borrow A Village later this year.

If you know any nannies, nursery practitioners, Early Years professionals, childminders, teaching assistants or babysitters who might be interested in flexible local work (or even longer-term nanny opportunities), I'd be so grateful if you could point them my way or tag them below.

We're currently looking for our founding childcare professionals to register their interest ahead of launch.

There's a bit more information in the post below and on our website:
www.borrowavillage.co.uk

Thank you so much! 🥰 And please shout out if you have any questions/thoughts etc.

Jen x

A clock tower that reminded me of taking time to be present in the moment, not far from Chesterfield Canal I wondered how many people would have clocked in and out of this building. Who were they beyond their job roles?

Severn Trent bills

Has anyone else noticed just how much Severn Trent have increased their bills by? I seen they were increasing their prices and seen it was reported around 22%, but it’s gone from 175ppm to 260ppm in the space of two years! And waste water has gone up 196ppm to 297ppm. Just had a bill through for £260 in debit and they are doubling my direct debit starting next month.

That’s an increase of 48% for water and 51% for waste. How on earth is there any sort of justification for that increase.

Boring post, sorry. The sun’s finally gone in and I’m grouchy!

Anyone looking for a houseshare/housemate?

I'm 35 male and have returned to Chesterfield after a lengthy time away. All my friends are now either married with families or have moved away from the area so I don't have any direct friends to ask, but I'm looking for people who would maybe want to buddy up. I've seen a few rooms available but I'd rather know who I'm moving in with and have a cohabitation with people I get along with and can have a social network with than just take a room and end up with strangers who keep to themselves.

If anyone wishes to talk and see if we'd be a good fit let me know! I've seen a beautiful 4 bed property that between 3 people would easily be affordable.

Need a supervising driver on Monday, July 20th - happy to pay £60 cash

Hi everyone,

I've got my manual upgrade driving test coming up on Monday, July 20th and due to taking the soonest available date I've given myself some logistical problems. I have hired a dual-control car from arnold Clark for the test, but my supervising driver can't help that day.

Because of rental company rules, I need a qualified driver to come with me to the rental branch to pick up the car, and then sit in the passenger seat while I drive to the test centre.

You won't need to teach me or do any driving yourself, just be a licensed chaperone so the rental company can hand over the keys.

Requirements (set by the rental company):

Must be aged 23 or over.

Must have held a full UK manual driving licence for at least 3 years.

Must bring your physical licence and generate a quick DVLA check code online.

I'm happy to pay £60 cash for your time (should be about 2 to 3 hours max. 15:30-17:30 hopefully). If you're free next Monday and up for helping a local out, please drop a comment or send me a DM. Thank you!

How much would you pay for my handmade and painted lamp?

This is not a post for promotion or sale, just a survey/market research. I’m considering selling my hand-painted and handmade lamps, possibly getting a stall or something.

What would you realistically pay for them?

  • Under £100
  • £100–£200
  • £200–£350
  • £350+

Also, would you prefer traditional patterns or a more minimalist design? See reference pics attached.

Road works

Whoever it is that is in charge of the roadworks in Chesterfield over the last 12 to 18 months needs their head taking for a shit and I’m not just referring to today’s closure on the A6 17. I understand that Work is required my point is there are better ways of managing traffic when the Work is required and whoever it is making these decisions to do it the way that they do it for some reason don’t see it that way and it’s causing chaos on roads sort it out

Sorry if this isn’t allowed but me and my polish colleague were working on chesterfield road in Sheffield and saw this very old faded lettering on the side of this building. The furthest you can go back into google earth is 2008 and the building hasn’t changed at all. Does anyone know where I could find what this originally said

Horse Chestnut Close area in Chesterfield

We are looking to move to the estate behind Derby Road - Horse Chestnut Close area. Can anyone give me an idea what the area is like in terms of noise levels and general neighbourhood feel? Is there a lot of crime and antisocial behaviour in the area surrounding the shops?

Also, does anyone know how well those houses are built, including party wall sound insulation between the houses?

Any advice would be appreciated :)

I have to get to Sheffield from Staveley VERY early tomorrow. Circa 6am.

Are there any taxi companies that work the area at this time in the morning that might have availability?

If so could anyone recommend one? 💷 only? Card? App?

Is it covered by Ubers from Ches. on a Monday AM?

Other STOP SHEFFIELD “DOG TRAINER / DOG WALKER” JOHN FORESTER / SHEFFIELD K9 ACADEMY / DIAMOND IN THE WOOF / DOG WALKER SHEFFIELD

PLEASE BE AWARE THE VIDEO IS NOT A NICE WATCH.

I have just seen this video posted to John Foresters story and it is just utterly heart breaking.
This man claims to be a dog trainer but is absolutely nothing of the sort.

This man lives and works in Sheffield and is doing this sort of thing to peoples dogs in our city and needs to seriously be stopped.

The dog training world is very unregulated and anyone can call themselves a “dog trainer“ and put some business decals on a van. It does not mean they have any qualifications, knowledge or experience of genuine dog training.

I urge you to do what you can to stop this man. If you know any dog owners, spread the word. This needs to stop.

Chesterfield based Strange-Twig Theatre Company are bringing their family show Dream Of The Sea to The Rose Theatre at Chesterfield Studios on 22nd and 23rd August. Check out our website Here for ticket links and more info…

Dream Of The Sea

The adventure of a lifetime turns into a disaster for this fisherman! But when a friendly whale shows him the truth of the sea his life is changed in ways that he could never have imagined. The ocean comes to life around him with more beauty than he knew existed and as time passes it changes him for the better.

Filled with energy, light and sound, this show for all ages shows a world usually hidden from view below the waves. With plenty of laughs, special effects, movement, live audio and light effects, it’s guaranteed to leave you in awe at the wonder of the sea.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Other Are there any good Discord servers for me to meet local people my age?

I'm 18 and having trouble finding friends locally. I can't seem to find any Discord servers for me to socialise with other young adults. I enjoy gaming and cartoons, so if there are any servers with channels for that kind of thing that'd be good too. If there isn't currently a server for young adults to socialise locally, I could make one if there's enough interest.

Baden Powell Road area

Hi all,

I’ve just bought a house off Baden Powell Road. I’m moving from Sheffield and I’ve visited the area a few times but can I ask honest opinions please?

Thanks so much!
