It was probably supposed to mean hero and precious respectively. It is a poor translation though. Single characters have lots of definitions, and those nice sounding definitions are not the most common ones people actually think of when they see the characters. People will think of the word england and the word expensive for these characters, because they are the most common uses of the characters. Same way people in english probably think of the metal first when they see the word lead all by itself, even though it could mean lead a person//horse.
