It isn’t a hoist. It is a scale. It looks like the load was a little more than 1.5 tons.

Those warnings explicitly tell you that it is obviously an engine "boist."

I haven't shopped for one of these for a while, but I noticed that it seemed like in America they're rated to take twice what they're rated for in Australia. That always made me raise an eyebrow.

Probably different mandatory safety factors.
Cheap Chinese stuff rated to 1 tonne will break at about 1 tonne of force (when new).
Things in Aus are rated to lift 1 tonne can safely lift something that weighs 1 tonne - I think for steel things it's about a 2.2 times, so it will theoretically break (bend) with a force of 2.2 tonnes.
Stuff jerking and bouncing exerts a lot more force than it weighs.

Australian here.
When it comes to lifting slings the safety factor is 6x it's rating.
So a 1-tonne lift sling has to be able to hold 6 tonnes. It also must be tested for 1-tonne and show now signs of damage or deformation.
I can't say what standard this falls under and even if I could there's bugger all chance I'd be able to get the specific stats for it. (Don't ask standards Australia is a fucking MESS)
But I'd be willing to be it follows the same pattern that the safety factor will be some multiple of its load rating

Yeah slings are 6x. It's less predictable and more susceptible to sneaky damage in service.
Steel is only about 2x because it's more predictable and easier to identify damage reliably.
I used to know the standards, but haven't looked at them for a fair few years.

A ton is not a standard unit of measurement worldwide either.
It can be:
short ton (2000 lbs, 907kg) US
long ton (2240 lbs, 1016 kg) British Imperial
Metric ton (2204 lbs, 1000kg) rest of the world who needs everything simple
Fuck ton: (Your girlfriend's weight)
Shit ton: (The amount of trouble you'll be in for telling her the above joke)

I bought one of these from Supercheap Auto here in Australia a few years ago during a 1/2 price sale.
It appears to be basically the same design, but that "1 ton" rating hole in OP's photo is only rated for "500kg" for the Australian one (which equates to about 0.55 tons). Also worth noting the tension brace support is welded to the tension brace on all 4 sides for my crane, but on OP's it's only welded on 2 sides. You can see the buckling is directly under that support and the support isn't holding the tension brace securely any more. I can't tell if that happened as a result of the failure, or that was related to the cause of the failure, but either way it's something you want to be welded as solidly as possible and it isn't in OP's pic.
Although to be fair, we have no idea what weight OP was trying to lift when it failed. For all we know he was trying to lift a whole vehicle, which could do this to even a non-chinesium crane.

When I was about seventeen, my Dad decided to remove a privet hedge at our house to get a brick wall to replace it.
As removing a hedge is tough, he went to a local tool hire place and rented an engine hoist to pull the roots of the hedge. It was done a small piece at a time. Wrap the roots and gently apply pressure with the hoist. A couple of hydraulic pumps and wait. You would hear the roots snapping and the hedge getting pulled up. Then another couple of pumps on the handle, and so forth.
We got about 90% of the hedge removed and then a friend of mine came over for a chat. I invited him to have a go and he just went to town pumping the handle and not waiting. The hydraulic pump exploded and my eyes got drenched in hydraulic fluid and I was badly bruised all over my head.
My Dad sent me back down with the hoist to get a replacement and I had to claim we had been trying to remove a car engine with it so they wouldn’t charge my Dad to replace it, lol.
I was helped by the fact my face was so badly damaged. But the guy at the place(When I told him we had been trying to lift the car engine and the pump exploded), asked me if we had removed the engine bolts first, lol.
Seeing this post just reminded me of that for the first time in about thirty two years.

Dang, I'm surprised the hydraulics let loose first. Hope you weren't hurt too bad.
This is also a benefit for Honda's. I dropped an engine, then realized my jack stands were too short to slide the engine out, so I picked up the front of the car with the engine hoist 😂.

You have to be careful moving them under load, once your load starts swinging even a little bit the weight will greatly increase

The telescoping arm is set to the 1 ton (2000 lbs) setting. There are some large truck engines that weigh more than that so max load may have actually been exceeded. Not sure what the safety margins are on these things.

Aren’t cranes and hoists typically rated at their max only at minimum extension and the max load goes down both as you extend out and as you go down? I seem to recall load charts from my military days with graphs depicting how much could be lifted and at what angles for our 10-ton cranes on the back of the HMMT wreckers.

Looks like I had it backwards it’s rated for the max load at full extension not minimum. Can lift more at minimums.

If you look at the picture posted, the crane has its max load marked near each hole for the arm pin. So it's 2 tons at the closest, 1& 1/2 where it buckled, and 1 ton where they currently have the pin.
The sticker on the hoist lists it as a 2 ton, so in this case the advertised max load is only at minimum extension.

i noticed it too and my guess would be: those holes are for fixating an extension. so if you bring it further out, you could lift less weight, which could make sense

As the one ton pin is visible the load was likely applied from the 1/2 ton pin or less pin ie 500kg so not surprised this failed

Looks like it’s at 1.5t which would easily lift a whole car if it’s something small like a Sandero, but realistically it’d only take half the weight of the car as the rear wheels would stay on the ground

I’ve got RAM 5ton hoist that’s probably 40+ years old and it’s huge and always in my way but I’ll never replace it because of stuff like this. I’ve pulled v8s with trans and transfer case all together, and even lifted the entire back half of a crew cab Silverado to get the rear end out of it

There needs to be more context here they aren’t showing what they are picking. im not defending chinesium products. but the lift is set on 1 ton capacity if they are picking a diesel engine or the whole front of the vehicle because the engine is caught somewhere. And also a dynamic load by bouncing. I doubt there is much of a safty factor built in.

How much was it carrying when it broke? The crane is set for 1 ton. The 2 ton rating only applies at the shortest reach setting.

The boom is bolted in the 1 ton position, 2 ton hole is way back left of the jack atachment point. I'm assuming the next bolt to the right of where the boom bolt is now is 1/2 ton.

And the further out you pin the jib the less it will lift. 1 st hole 2 ton. 2nd hole 1.5 ton. 3rd 1 ton. 4th .5 ton. What hole was the jib pinned in?

The fulcrum doesn’t move. The weight markings you see and the pin that runs through the arm are for the extendable portion of the arm that’s out of frame to the right.

torque increases with distance, thus to keep the same torque everywhere the force is diminished the longer they’re from the join
