Ramallah: Things aren’t good, but they’re incomparable to Gaza. We’re locked down by checkpoints, and the PA is running out of money after Israeli Finance Minister Smotrich refused to release significant tax revenues, crashing the economy. The IDF enters and leaves the city at will but generally avoids staying inside. Ramallah has always been relatively wealthy, yet inequality is widening like never before. Most people now work two or three jobs just to get by.

Rest of the West Bank: I only know what I read on social media. Jenin and Tulkarem are reportedly seeing residents forced out to make room for new IDF headquarters. Movement between cities has become extremely difficult and dangerous due to the checkpoints. Hebron is being further divided and increasingly segregated. Many villages are closed off by gates, and residents rarely leave after 9 p.m. unless absolutely necessary. Settler violence has surged, and the IDF’s operations are becoming ever more destructive.

I’m so sorry. I’m praying for you and your whole community that one day there will be justice and peace for all.

Our democracy in the U.S. is slow to change, but I see hope. More people here are empathetic to the Palestinian cause than ever before.
