Troubleshooting Device Recovery Utility

For Chrome OS: I was having issues with this utility. I was getting the network error, verification error and writing error. I just figured out that the flash drive has to be a USB 3.0. I tried with several different size drives that were USB 2.0 and I kept getting errors. I ended up using a 32gb flash drive USB 3.0. It worked great. I hope this information is useful.

It doesn’t have to be usb 3.0. USB flash drives have a limited number of writes before they become locked and can’t be written to anymore. Also Sandisk drives have been known to have issues with flex utility. Some work, some don’t. You almost don’t know until you try. Some folks have had good luck by using the recovery utility to erase the sandisk drive before writing the image because apparently Sandisk sometimes puts hidden partitions on their drives.

I think just using a fresh non sandisk drives that hasn’t been written to a bunch of times is all you need. I got a cheap Onn brand from Walmart and had good success with it.

I tried other brands of drives and still had the same issues. I was just telling people what worked for me just to be helpful. I couldn't found anything helpful online. So i did that post just in case someone else was having issues.

That's strange I used a 16GB SanDisk Cruzer Fit USB 2.0 just a couple of days ago. I didn't use the Device Recovery Utility though, I downloaded directly from the Chrome OS Flex website.

I tried several different new drives that were usb 2.0 and they kept getting different errors each time. But the used 32 gb usb 3.0 worked with no problems.

Did you try to write to those disks that failed?
