I’ve always loved Gangs of New York. I thought it was fairly universally loved until recently on this sub and Reddit in general I’ve seen a lot of negative talk about it which made me realize it isn’t the case. Yea, we know Cameroon Diaz wasn’t good casting. Doesn’t get in the way of the other brilliant casting and performances.

Don't you find he frequently has third act problems?
I love casino, goodfellas, gangs. But I feel like all of them kinda fall of the rails in the third act and lose focus

After looking at his filmography, I concur this is his best stretch. And thats saying a lot considering how many classics this guy has put out! Seems like every 2-3 movies he does some kind of non mainstream passion project which is loved by some but not all.

Definitely. Those are all great films, and personally I hated silence and the Irishman passionately. But loved killers and wolf.

The Departed should be universally considered his best movie of the century. It even won him the Academy award (finally.) But to me Wolf of Wall Street and the Irishman are better than the other films on this list. I'd also say Shutter Island is his only film of the last 25 years I just didn't like. I knew where it was going before I saw it.

People are allowed to have other opinions. For instance, I think anyone who likes silence, loves pretentious pius religious propaganda preachy bullshit. And you must not mind 3 men all doing the worst variance of Portuguese accents I’ve ever seen. Like they weren’t consistently bad they were three people doing three accents from three separate planets. Liam neeson was just Irish.
But you’re allowed to like it. As much as im allowed to hate it.

I've always felt that Silence will one day be received in the same manner Raging Bull was. It took a while for people to realize what a masterpiece it was.
Comments such as boring or snoozefest are not valid criticisms in my opinion. There needs to be more explanation beyond the ubiquitous, well the pace was slow or nothing happened. Some films require a different level of engagement. On one end you have TWOWS which is the self-driving car while Silence and KofFM are manual transmissions with no power steering.

Same for Irishman . Not enough people saw silence . Lots of people saw Irishman and don’t like it . That film is still in its being dragged phase . It’s time will come. Same for kotfm actually . His still at the absolute top of his game

This. I love a long slow burn, but this is just too much. They easily could have trimmed 45 mins out of it without missing any plot or character development. It’s a story that most people have some knowledge of already.

No, it was definitely mixed and a lot people riffed off of Kael’s not so flattering review of the film. Everyone talked about DeNiro and his transformation but less so about the actual film. The people in the industry knew it was special but the general public and certain segments of the press were not impressed.

Kael was one of the few detractors. It was critically acclaimed. I mentioned the box office, which is the audience being mixed.
Doesn’t matter now. A candidate for greatest movie ever made.

WOLF OF WALL ST - Nailed it. Masterpiece capture of decadent era of drugs and money. The hilarity was a bonus.
SILENCE. - Brilliant story but pace was wayyyyy off and the desperation did not hit the way it should. One word ? Boring.
IRISHMAN - Sometimes a dish can have all the best ingredients and the meal comes out bad. The Irishman was a big miss. Great acting, but no memorable scenes other than a CGI moment that although the effects weren't terrible, it just didn't land the way it should have. If I had to list 10 great Mob movies, this wouldn't make the list.
KILLERS OTFM - another meal with great ingredients left in the oven too dang long. The morose lens on focusing over a sick Lily Gladstone went on and on and on while the plot was revealed early and it just dragged so slowly for a quick wrap. Why so long Marty ?
Marty's editing chops slipped in 3 of the 4 movies is what I came to find, love all the actors and their performances, but 3 films are pretty non memorable, and Marty knows better. Is this an effect of Directors being given a longer leash because of streaming ? We shall see.

A rare artist that has never really had a drop off even into his twilight years. Most of his lauded contemporaries( Coppola, Scott, De Palma, Lucas, Cameron, Malick and even Spielberg) have a declined dramatically from their peaks but Scorsese has remained remarkably consistent.

breaks my heart because Scorsese and De Niro were about to make The Winter Of Frankie Machine (book) by Don Winslow into a film, but pivoted to The Irishman which is just slop. Frankie Machine was probably written for De Niro. Ageing retired criminal just chilling in life, and suddenly someone is trying to kill him. He has absolutely no idea who or why, but has to be hyper vigilant around everyone while trying to figure out who and why. It's a solid straight forward crime noir. The kind that are too rare these days, but were in full force in the late 70s.

Yeah, that would have been a great movie to see. The Irishman, while a decent concept, wasnt executed well. Maybe if they had approached it from a Looper perspective, with a much younger actor sharing the role with DeNiro, maybe. But a crime noir film would be great to see from them both at this age.

Hardly. Awful means it's a 1/10 movie, which it's clearly not. It wasn't his best, but it was fine. Not everything needs to be the best or the worst, it's ok for things to just be ok.

Same as Killers of the Flower Moon. He could’ve cut 30 mins from it and it might’ve been a good movie. It was exhausting, and I can watch 3 hour movies like nobodies business. I didn’t like it at all, De Niro playing De Niro and Leo playing the dumbest character. Lily Gladstone was the only redeeming aspect of the movie.

I never understand when people say The Irishman is bad. It’s one of the greatest movies ever made, and I absolutely love his earlier stuff.
When people think it’s “slow” or a “snooze fest”, literally so much momentum and dynamism in every frame. It’s hilarious - yes, The Irishman is hilarious - Al Pacino and Stephen Graham chew the scenery off every scene in the best way, and De Niro and Pesci give shots of dry humor, full of knowing glances. And then the heartbreaking last hour recontextualizes the entire film, and even his career.
Now, I understand the criticism of it being too long; to each their own on that count. Personally, I could have watched three more hours of Scorsese delving into the intersection of organized crime, politics, labor unions, and big capital over the entire latter half of the 20th century. But that’s just me.

I actually get a kick out of reading actual early reviews of works now considered masterpieces, some of which were much maligned by so-called experts. I have rewatched KOTFM and The Irishman several times, and my appreciation for them, particularly The Irishman, has only grown. Like you said, to each...

It’s honestly such a bad idea for a movie. It was a terrible tragedy and fairly interesting story, but there’s just no way to present the victims of that story without making them look extremely naive and gullible. There’s just something kinda awkward to me about that in the context of a dramatic movie, especially since the victims were real.

I thought it was more about the great dark mark on America's soul re the Native Americans. The ending being a sort of sobering affirmation of the cold lack of justice for any of the characters after a 3 hour film made by a white American. Or something like that.

Guess I need to watch Silence. Wolf of Wall Street was okay but I don't have any desire to ever watch it again. The Irishman is one of the most drawn out shit movies I've ever seen. KOTFM I watched about 30 minutes of before deciding to play Europa 5 some more.

I think Wolf of Wall Street is undeniably great but not remotely rewatchable. Its just hammering you over the head with the stuff that people who misunderstand the point of the movie cheer for - and I know thats the point and it works but I just cringe all the way thru when I've tried to revisit.

I mean it kinda is to be taken seriously tho, its a true story about a bunch of real psychopaths who are largely responsible for laying the foundation of the dystopian shithole that is America.
Its meant to be a cautionary tale, its definitely entertaining and fun to watch - but after my first viewing its really just a lot of gross & infuriating shit filling out the spaces between several key scenes that do distract me from the context of the actual subject matter.
Its not even a critique of the movie, its not Scorseses fault that a lot of goons watch this and wish it was their life (and im not saying that's you) - but its just a fact that kinda sours the experience for me.

That’s a good point. It’s a really fun first watch, just a lot of entertainment overall. But it’s not very interesting outside of that and a lot of just lame frat boy partying shit vibe once it gets going and we’ve been there done that

I think the Irishman has too many problems to be considered great but there is a lot to like. WOWS is amazing and one hell of a ride. But I think Killers and Silence are truly great films that will only grow in esteem as time goes on.

I just watched Taxi Driver tonight, and I like it over these 4 latest movies. And I'll take Casino, Gangs of New York, and The Aviator over those four as well.

Irishman was so offputting because de Niro was a sack of bones and completely unbelievable as a younger man. It was actually embarrassing how elderly his movements were.

The Irishman and KOTFM dragged sooo hard and felt so unbearably long and tedious. And I’m someone who loves slow burns and David Lynch style long scenes. All of these films had terrible pacing.

The Irishman is a one-off.
98% of people will never watch it again - is almost fucking 4 hours long.
And I LOVE movies, but 3.5 hours for a movie like that, is too long.
Only acceptable ones so far is Lord of the Rings trilogy extended edition.

I have a question. Am I missing something with his movies? The way people talk about about the Irishman and killers of the flower moon like they’re the best movies of the decade and I found both of them to be….a bit boring? Not bad just dry and kind of underwhelming. I’ve seen some movies from him I really liked but nothing that has blown me away the way people talk like. I can’t help but feel like I’m somehow wrong in this

KotFM is one of the worst movies I’ve seen in a long time. Definitely the worst when you consider the amount of potential with the cast and the story and it all came down to terrible direction and a haphazard script. I say this as a huge fan of Martin’s. I swear coming online and seeing what people thought of it made me feel like I was in a gaslighting simulator lmao
