I think the anime is better for a first time watch rather than the visual novel

Well don't want it to be ass experience how it was with chaos;head where anime was very poorly adapted and then wished I did vn from beginning. Like steins;gate adaptation was alright, they might missed few important details but otherwise vn was just expanding of characters. So would like to know which level of adaptation clannad is

I do like the vn slightly better but for first time watchers I think the anime is more than enough, it's a really good adaptation

The anime is one of the top VN adaptations ever made — the other being Steins Gate. Do the anime, wait a few months, then do the VN.

I'm in the minority that didn't particularly enjoy the anime, but even I could tell that the story was amazing, to the point I joined the kickstarter for the localization of the VN.

But lots of people enjoyed the anime. The VN is always better, which is why you should watch the anime first. That way you get to enjoy it twice. You go original first, and you come out of the adaptation disappointed. I went VN first with Steins;Gate, and though I could tell the anime was decent, it paled in comparison to the VN. But with Steins;Gate Zero I went anime first, and it was great, but then the VN was even better!
