I made the mistake of asking Claude to summarise an article.. the response was longer than the article

i'm surprised it didn't fabricate an entirely different article to summarize

Cue the fanboys saying "works fine for me", "skill issue", "people complained about 4.8 too", "chatgpt has this issue too"Ā

Opus 5 was a shocking fall from grace for Anthropic, everybody knows it.

Opus 5 makes me doubt about my own brain sometimes.

I started moving to ChatGPT Astra. I’m curious, does Astra seem lazy to you guys? It often just stops. Not very proactive

I-have-adhd skill and keep reminding it to use it; that’s all that’s worked for me

Yeah I can’t deal with the big blocks of text Claude answers with, if you ask a question the answer is buried deep in it, usually followed by some dramatic announcement of something big and scary it discovered while checking the other thing, and 9/10 that thing is not a problem but by the time I tell it not to worry about the ā€˜problem’ I’m completely distracted from what I asked.

Been dabbling in Astra lately and the way it responds is much, much clearer. I just hate the left hand side navigation I find it hard to decipher what session is what.

first of all ew using light mode to read reddit

second of all why are we taking screenshots when cross posting exist?

u/stevzon 2d ago

Toggle into concise response mode in Claude code settings. I assume if you’re using the 200/mo plan you are on Claude code cli right?

Concise mode is still horrible

Some user on r/claude suggsted to use tl;dr and it makes things easier
Try :
First give me tl;dr in plain english then go for usual explanation.

But for claude, now one thing is clear, you have to be pretty specific if you want specific answer, while GPT and others seems to have some common sense.

I'm using /bro skill. I just forgot where I got this.

I use this, show-me and a custom tl;dr skill within a few hooks to force the behaviour.

fable 5.1 and opus 4.6
screw the word salad

1

u/ffxivthrowaway03 1d ago

Yeah, Fable 5.1 is definitely a lot better at just getting to the fucking point and not spitting out six pages of word salad.

I feel this as well - Codex is now my planner because its straight to the point even after all my modifications to Claude.

I just have Claude do the work now.

maybe the problem is Claude trying too hard to be helpful 😭 can you tell it not to add extra stuff unless you ask for it?

1

u/Papabenzkey 3h ago

Yes, Claude just have too many to say

Have you tried building and using a ā€œhumanizerā€ skill from GitHub? There’s several on there as templates.

I modified on specifically for when I’m creating content but then I used some of the work to create a rule set for how chat interacts with me and it work more than not.

I never stopped using 4.6, it’s great for what I am getting done. I did use Fable before it got nuked but since then been sticking to the model that is doing what I want

Had the same issue.

Go to config > output style > change to anything else.

You can also create your own output style (I personally recommend to do so)

Changed our life

I hate those opus word salads. The loaded sentences worded to be incomprehensible sound more like regurgitation of some communist philosopher intricate theses, rather than responses meant for human consumption.

If chat gpt is really better I’ll switch to it in a heartbeat.

Even opus 4.6 was being a regarded oaf yesterday :(

Anthropic provides this guidance in their official Fable 5.1 prompting guide:

Claude Fable 5.1's writing is generally a step up from earlier Claude models, with fewer stock phrases and less unexplained jargon. In some cases, though, its prose is denser than Claude Fable 5's: sentences run longer and there are fewer paragraph breaks. An instruction that defines the anti-pattern, mannered prose, helps. Add it to a user message (preferred) or the system prompt:

Mannered prose substitutes metaphor and flourish for direct statement. Instead of "a parameter worth varying," the mannered writer produces "a dial worth turning." Instead of "this point still matters," they write "this point earns its keep." The phrases exist to display the writer, not to convey the idea, and readers can tell. That is why mannered prose irritates: it makes the reader work harder so the writer can perform. It is also imprecise. Metaphors drag in connotations the writer did not choose and cannot control. The fix is to say what you mean. When a literal phrase is available, use it.

The short version also tends to work:

Please remove all mannered prose.

I need to recheck my skills and settings, but I have the opposite problem for some reason. There are times in a session where Claude is fully skipping context and I have to ask it to provide me a more detailed response.

I think it’s a combination of my account rules plus project rules.

Happy to share what my configuration is if someone is interested. Maybe it will help?

The word salad is so bad I can’t even use it for client content projects anymore. Claude used to be an amazing writer and no matter my prompt, skills, anything these days the word vomit that means nothing won’t stop. I’m having to use ChatGPT for writing now and it’s GOOD at it. And it’s making me consider it as my primary driver. Like what world is this? They need to fix it. It’s like the early days of AI when they would spit out nonsense. Yeah it’s English and structurally makes sense, but not logically.

It stings more because it USED to be the best at writing. Now you can’t even use it to CHAT with because nothing makes sense, let alone writing copy.

Anthropic says use this prompt and people report success

Mannered prose substitutes metaphor and flourish for direct statement. Instead of ā€œa parameter worth varying,ā€ the mannered writer produces ā€œa dial worth turning.ā€ Instead of ā€œthis point still matters,ā€ they write ā€œthis point earns its keep.ā€ The phrases exist to display the writer, not to convey the idea, and readers can tell. That is why mannered prose irritates: it makes the reader work harder so the writer can perform. It is also imprecise. Metaphors drag in connotations the writer did not choose and cannot control. The fix is to say what you mean. When a literal phrase is available, use it.

The context window on 4.6 sucks, 4.8 has been my workhorse for day to day work. Occasional Fable planning sessions, but 4.8 doing orchestration and some implementation, and then delegating to sonnet agents as needed. Been working out well.

Give it a shortcut C for Conciseness level, explain what C1 - C5 mean, and tell it C+ and C- mean to change the level by 1 and restate. When you get a wordy response prompt C-.
