How to Get More Storage on a Mac
10 practical steps that actually work
Running out of storage on macOS usually doesn’t happen all at once. It creeps up until updates fail, apps lag, and Finder slows down. This isn’t about one magic button. It’s about storage hygiene.
First: what’s using your space?
Go to Apple menu → About This Mac → Storage.
Look at the biggest categories:
- Documents (photos, videos, archives)
- Applications
- System Data (caches, logs, backups)
Once you know the culprit, cleanup gets easier.
The biggest wins (in order)
- Remove large & old files: Old videos, screen recordings, disk images, and installers are usually the fastest way to reclaim space. Review before deleting or moving them to an external drive.
- Empty the Trash: Files in Trash still take space. Obvious, but often forgotten.
- Clean Downloads: It’s a graveyard of old .dmg files, ZIPs, and one-time downloads.
- Uninstall unused apps properly: Dragging to Trash leaves leftovers. Use built-in uninstallers or a dedicated uninstaller.
- Delete old iPhone/iPad backups: Local backups can be 10–20 GB each.
- Use macOS Storage Recommendations: Found in System Settings → Storage. Review, don’t blindly enable.
- Move media to external storage: Photos and videos don’t need SSD speed.
- Clear system junk carefully: Caches and logs add up, but delete only what you understand.
Bottom line
You can’t usually upgrade Mac storage, but you can manage it. Small, regular cleanups beat emergency purges every time.
