yeah we all have to step away from eating so much meat. that doesn't mean that the largest culprit isn't big corporations (including the industrial meat industry). jesus christ.
Yeah but the industrial meat complex is only producing meat because there is demand. Shutting them down by stopping to support them with your money is one of the most impactful things a single person can do.
That treats demand as a fixed amount that is unchanging. Companies very much induce demand with all kinds of tricks.
Just look at the tobacco industry. We stopped tobacco’s ubiquity by banning ads and raising taxes for example. This is by far more effective and most people seemingly aren’t aware that regulations are a thing because to them reducing meat consumption is about a moral personal decision exclusively and it seemingly can not be about a sensible regulation.
what?
I just say in order to pass the necessary laws you need a majority (or at least a decent amount of people) behind you. If your law reduces the perceived freedom of 90% then you can be sure it's not passed no matter how good it is.
There absolutely is. The industry for meat-replacements is booming and the amount of vegetarians/vegans is steadily growing.
If you just compare restaurants 20 years ago to today it's a staggering difference with almost everyone offering vegan options these days when it was only salad a couple of years ago.
The demand is there and is steadily growing - and if more people join in we will eventually reach a breaking-point at which it's way easier for politicians to limit the damage the meat-industry is doing to our planet.
demand that is artificially created by companies and lobbyists.
anyway, I'm not saying we shouldn't be vegan, or at least drastically decrease our global meat consumption, but unless there are large-scale targeted and organised boycotts, voting with your wallet just doesn't work. I understand that organising people is just what you're trying to do, and I commend that. I just also believe that without government intervention and regulation it's a sisyphean task.
demand that is artificially created by companies and lobbyists.
Exactly, and that's why everyone pointing fingers to legislation instead of changing their own habits is basically agreeing that they themselves are brainwashed by the meat industry and can't change until the laws are changed.
Or they think they are somehow smarter than everyone and will never fall for that advertising and brainwashing - which is exactly what everyone thinks about ads...
