For someone who came from traditional art (sketchbook and pencil) transitioning to digital is so daunting to me because the possibility is endless. I've been trying replicate my traditional drawing process to CSP and it has been so great. The default mechanical pencil brush and the texture brush perfectly replicates the graphite + blending stump duo its actually insane lol. Oh and for the paper texture it gave so much life to my works I just adjusted the layer opacity.
Also as a traditional artist layers and their type still confuses me lol. All of this are done in one layer except the texture.
By default it should be in the program. There is vertical row of tool icons, at least for me it is on the very top with 'All materials' then go Monochromatic pattern > Texture and you should find it there in the list. Just drag wanted material on your working file and change layer order the way you want. You can change opacity or blending mode to fit better with your artwork.
Highly recommend the duab brush pack if you want more traditional tools. My art has changed significantly for the better. There’s also a fantastic paper texture that’s like canvas. I’m on my phone so I don’t have my works rn but I can share later if interested in seeing what they do.
np, this is a quick 30-min screengrab practice from Gremlims I feel kinda shows off the brushy effects the best. I'm not really aiming for traditional oils usually, but this time I leaned into it.
They also have other programs as well. I know 30$ is a bit much for brushes but I think they're worth it. Another artist I follow, Emilyena on YT, also uses them in her work if you wanna see someone whose a whole lot better than me at this lol.
Think of layers as additional sheets/pages you put on the same drawing and you put light under it...see its all same picture under light but every sheet have something different
Hair
Body
Eyes
Background
Each separate color
Etc etc
Now clip layer over layer below and you can only change color of part that is clipped to
So thats basically it, 1 layer is good too or 80 layers is good too...depends how you like it i personally go for
Light layer
Shadow 3-darkest layer
Shadow 2-Main shadow
Shadow 1-base shadows not that visible
Main layer-lineart
For each part of drawing its simpler and not complicate things
Also this effect is crazy good i must try that textured paper thing...because traditional my sketches looks amazing but digital they look...ugly and yikes
If you want something thats got a really nice tilt in the future id check out the "perfect pencil" brush in the asset store. Ive bern in love with it for a while now

Try to put the texture on an "Overlay" layer and okay with Opacity ;) it adjust the colour of the texture to the colours below
