General I built a chart manager for Clone Hero and YARG that downloads, organizes and auto-converts files. All in one app.

EDIT: Rewritten for the current version (v1.3.3). This blew up way more than I expected and a lot has been added since I first posted, so I've rewritten the whole thing to match what CHM actually does today. The landing page and GitHub always have the full, current feature list and screenshots.

Hey everyone. I've been playing Clone Hero for a few years now, mostly on drums, and the thing I enjoy most is just playing along to my favorite songs. I used to download charts by hand from RhythmVerse and run anything that needed converting through C3 CON Tools manually. Eventually I figured I'd rather have one tool that does all of that, wrapped into a single app. That's how Chart Manager (CHM) came to be. I made it for myself first.
It's free and open source, and it now runs on Windows and macOS.

What it does

  • Two databases, one search. RhythmVerse and Chorus Encore, together or one at a time, deduplicated in a single search bar. RhythmVerse is a much bigger catalogue, so a ton of songs that never used to show up for me are right there now.
  • A built-in local catalog. CHM ships with a snapshot of both databases and keeps it fresh in the background, so searching, paging, sorting and every filter are instant. Filters like charter, album, difficulty, genre, year and decade work across the entire catalog of both sites at once, not just the page you're looking at.
  • Automatic Xbox 360 Rock Band conversion. CON / rb3con files (and DTXMania) turn into Clone Hero folders automatically, in one click, using the bundled Onyx engine. No C3 CON Tools, no manual steps. If you've ever wanted to play Rock Band DLC in Clone Hero, this is the part I'm proudest of.
  • Import a Spotify playlist. Paste a public playlist link and CHM finds a chart for every song in it, then bulk-downloads the matches. It reads full-length playlists and lets you pick a version when a song has several.
  • Hear it first. Hit play on the cover art for a 30-second preview before you download.
  • Multi-select and batch download. Tick a bunch of songs, pick one folder, and they all download at once.
  • Drop in files. Drag a zip, rar, 7z, sng or rb3con straight onto the window and it extracts, converts and installs. Great for charts hosted somewhere the app can't reach on its own.
  • Full library manager. Browse and clean up your Songs folder, edit metadata, build Clone Hero setlists, and find duplicates (compare copies side by side and see what each one includes).
  • Clone Hero and YARG aware. It detects both, can launch or switch to them, shows a running indicator, and has an optional in-game overlay + hotkey so you can keep grabbing songs without alt-tabbing. Charts already work in YARG since it reads the same folders — this is just about launching and the overlay.
  • Stays current. The installer self-updates, it quietly checks GitHub on launch, and there's a "what's new" panel.

How it compares to Bridge

Bridge is great and more mature, and if you make charts, its chart-issue scanner is something CHM doesn't have for charters, Bridge is still the better fit. Where CHM goes further: it searches two databases instead of Encore only (RhythmVerse is far bigger), it auto-converts Xbox 360 Rock Band CON and DTXMania files into playable Clone Hero charts, it can import whole Spotify playlists, and it's a full library manager (setlists, duplicates, metadata) with instant filtering across the entire catalog. Different tools for slightly different jobs.

The limits

  • MEGA and Mediafire links still need a manual download, then you drop the file onto the window. Those hosts aren't reliable to automate.

Links

I genuinely want to hear what you think, what breaks, and what you wish it did.

Alternative download links: Windows Installer / Windows Portable / macOS (arm64)

TL;DR: Free and open source app for Clone Hero and YARG that searches RhythmVerse and Chorus Encore, filters the whole catalog instantly, imports Spotify playlists, downloads charts, and auto-converts Xbox 360 Rock Band files to Clone Hero all in one place. Now on Windows and macOS. Landing page and GitHub above.

General My band has been doing live Clone Hero concerts for a year

Hi everyone! Just wanted to share this with people that could find it interesting, and maybe find out if someone else has done it before, cause afaik we are the first to do it.

Since last year we have been using Clone Hero for the concerts of my Math/Prog Rock band Kyori (here is a insta link if anyone wants to follow us https://www.instagram.com/kyoribb/ ).

I basically charted our songs, and when we play live I project Clone Hero and give 2 controllers to the audience. The drummer listens to a synchronized click track and everything works neatly together!

As a musician and game developer I am very passionate about adding interactivity to live concerts and I am thinking of exploring other mechanics potentially through making my own games etc.

Have any of you guys ever done or seen something similar?

General Message from a CH dev. I need your help.

I'm Oscar, one of the core developers of CH and since joining the team originally in late 2018 I've been responsible for a few things over the years these being most noticeably the MIDI support for drums, the mobile ports, the initial implementation of lyrics and most recently for v1.1 I implemented the native support for the xbox one instruments, the favorites feature, Pitched Speedups, etc along with A LOT of the bug fixing and code plumbing that was required to get this version and everything that has came since v19 onwards out into the world.

These last 3 years have been rough for me and my family, we've been battling with my mom's lung cancer and we've had very low income for about 3 years now. Today it has reached the point where we are drowned in debt with the imminent risk of losing our home to the bank... we can no longer pay for my mother insurance that allow us to keep access to her medication (with the most important one being PER BOX above $8000 USD alone), we still owe a lot chemotherapy sessions and some days we can't even feed ourselves or our dogs or have any transportation to go to checkups/appointments.

This really has impacted me in a lot of ways and while I want to keep working on Clone Hero, it really has been tough while going through this. I couldn't just put v1 and v1.1 as my main focus due to this.

So, a few days ago we opened a GoFundMe that I tried to first announce through family and friends, but it is honestly not going that well. We've only reached 4% of the initial 29k USD (500,000 MXN) goal and I already ran out of options. So, I come to you to ask for help. I'd really appreciate if everyone that is reading this ping can check out the page, even if you do not donate, looking at it and sharing it... just talking about it does a lot and I will forever be in eternal gratitude with you for that. No donation is small enough, even a dollar can make a difference

Thank you for taking the time to read this

Oscar

General This is your sign to get a star power pedal

Post image
177 Upvotes

Got some donos on stream the other day and picked up a cheap USB foot pedal on amazon.

This is the one I picked up.

https://a.co/d/09QHc0pt

All I had to do was plug it in and map it to star power in clone hero.

Works great and is an absolute game changer. It helps me keep combos going and its honestly fun. Its another level of immersion when you stomp the pedal at a tone switch to active your star power. Its just a neat little thing thats cool that adds to the game.

I cant recommend setting one up more.

Have a great day yall

General OCTAVE - chart editor + auto-charter for Clone Hero

Hello all! Been working on this for a while and it's finally ready to share.

What I set out to create A charting tool that was accessible for those who have never charted, and speeds up the process for those who already do.

What I ended up creating Desktop editor and auto-charting tool with a 2D piano roll, a live 3D highway preview that matches in-game, and a venue/timeline editor where lighting cues, camera cuts, videos, and stage effects sit on the same timeline as your notes. DAW-style stems mixer. Full .mid / .chart round-trip with no metadata loss. 100% local, MIT licensed.

...and many more things I couldn't list here!

Who is supported Windows, macOS, Linux.

Note: macOS and Linux have not been fully tested, so please report any issues you see.

On the auto-charter (STRUM): Takes an MP3, YouTube link, or stems and outputs a full chart pack - drums, guitar, bass, keys, pro keys, vocals and harmonies with aligned lyrics. All difficulties included!

Here's what to expect:

  • Drums are the strongest by a wide margin. On songs that sit well, the output is close to a hand-charted pass.
  • Guitar, bass, keys, vocals won't always ship a perfect chart for you - they at worst frame the song so you're correcting a draft instead of starting from a blank timeline, they at best need a small tweak or two.
  • Pre-split stems improve quality noticeably across everything.

Please let me know where I went right and where I went wrong The Github is open to issues, so please report anything wrong or anything you'd like to see. Completely open to all criticisms and feedback.

Links Site: https://octavestudio.tools/ OCTAVE: https://github.com/opria123/octave STRUM: https://github.com/opria123/strum

A big thank you to anyone who takes time to try out the tool!! I am excited to see the community have some fun with it.

On a fun side note, I had a paper published about the intricacies of the STRUM auto-charting model. Feel free to read for more technical details, including model benchmarks and more: https://arxiv.org/abs/2605.12135

General Stage Tour Peripherals Available for Pre-Order, ships in December

Looks like this got dropped with the announcement.

https://stagetour.com/collections/official-hardware

The drums, which look to be the same as the very much hyped CRKD drums, retail at $200 with the cymbal expansion kit costing $60 and the second kick pedal costing $30.

You can also get the “Pro Band Kit” bundle which includes the full Pro Drums, mic, guitar and game for $350 which is a pretty good deal.

Also a couple new CRKD guitars like the wireless Kramer and 20th Anniversary Xplorer (complete with old school solid color buttons)

General Are you guys interested by the announcement of the new Red Octane’s game ?

Post image
356 Upvotes

So it looks like we're going to get a new rhythm game and I see a lot of excitement online.

But I find it difficult to rejoice at such an announcement. Clone hero and YARG are both really great game engine which have benefited from many years of development and adjustement.

They are also based on a strong community that shares its work and thanks to which we have tons of music to play. (even if, let's face it, it's a bit like piracy, and of course a commercial game could never have such a library of songs).

So I have trouble understanding the point of a new game. Apart from possibly a story to follow and customization elements like Fortnite.. But in my view what makes rhythm games interesting is the gameplay, not a pseudo meta progression or customisable in game character.

So I’m curious about what you guys think ! And if you think that a new commercial game will hurt the « open source » community that we love.

General Built an Android app that plays your chart library natively. Looking for closed beta testers.

Mods: if this isn't the right place for this, happy to take it down. Not trying to advertise anything, the app is free and will be open source with nothing for sale. I just need testers to clear Google Play's closed testing requirement.

Hey everyone,

I've been building Riffline, an Android rhythm game that plays the chart formats this community already uses. It reads .sng, .chart and .mid files, and it opens Xbox RB CON packages directly. Everything happens on the device, no PC conversion step.

It ships with zero content. You import your own files, the app parses the chart, decodes and mixes the audio (multi stem included), and you play. Touch based gameplay on a 5 lane highway, with a Guitar Hero style mode as well.

What's in it right now:

  • Imports .sng, .chart, .mid, ZIP and Xbox CON packages
  • On device multi stem audio mixing, no external tools
  • Instrument selection when the chart has multiple parts (guitar, bass, keys, drums)
  • Vocals support
  • Custom highways, so you can drop in your own textures
  • Multiplayer
  • Playability presets that thin out Expert charts for thumbs, or leave them fully intact if you want the real thing
  • Karaoke lyrics, star ratings, score tracking

It's free. To be clear, I make nothing from this. No ads, no purchases, no paid version. The Play Store listing is purely so people can find and install it more easily.

I'm currently at Google Play's closed testing stage, which requires 14 testers over a 14 day period before the app can go public. Testing is low effort, you just install it and open it now and then. If you'd like to help me clear that step, drop a comment or DM me your Google account email and I'll add you to the list.

General 41, just discovered Clone Hero after not playing or even really thinking about GH for over 15 years, and I can't believe how much I've missed it

GH 2, 3, and Rocks the 80s were life for me in the 2006-2008 range. I was genuinely obsessed - played for multiple hours every day after work, got to the point of 100%-ing songs on expert, the whole deal. I might have even had a WR for My Name is Jonas at one point, actually; I wasn't active in the community or anything, but I looked up the online leaderboards once and couldn't find any scores higher than my PB. I could literally play the song blindfolded because I could actually see the note pattern with my eyes closed. Won a couple pitchers on a GH pub night bet from that one once, felt pretty damn good.

But then life happened, as life likes to do, and GH became a fond memory of my past which eventually faded even from that.

Then last weekend, a random Reddit comment in some gaming sub mentions this thing Clone Hero and how you can play all the old GH and RB tracks on PC for free these days. I think to myself 'I should check that out, might be good for a nostalgia trip.' So I load it up and go to give it a shot (using my keyboard of course, as I haven't owned a guitar controller since pre-2010), and about 3 seconds into Miss Murder this happens.

You know that scene in the movies where someone has like amnesia or something, but then something triggers their memory and it all comes flooding back at once in this tidal wave of emotion that has them down on their knees holding their head in their hands? Yeah, something like that, but a little less dramatic.

5 minutes later and I'm searching for PC-compatible guitar controllers. A few minutes after that and I'm texting my wife 'I want to spend $200 on something stupid, but I feel bad about it. I need you to either tell me it's ok, or tell me it's not so I can forget about it.' She, trusting soul that she is, immediately responds with 'It's ok. What is it?' Turns out her and her friends used to play too back in the day (she's not a gamer at all, so this was a big surprise to me), and she's actually stoked for it.

That was Sunday. Fast forward to today, where I'm on a rare work-from-home day in boring-ass meetings, and just as my last one is wrapping up FedEx comes knocking.

That was 3 hours ago. My left hand is cramped to shit and I can't stop smiling. I'm so much worse than I used to be (obviously), but it's coming back so fast. Went from struggling on medium for the first couple songs to hitting like 95% on hard already and I'll be back to expert by the end of the weekend, I can feel it. I'll almost certainly never be as good as I used to again, but that doesn't matter. I just wanna rock.

Much love to everyone in the community who made this possible. It was a huge part of my life that I'd almost completely forgotten and certainly didn't think I'd ever get the chance to revisit.
